My Google drive was out of storage so I wanted to delete some unwanted photos but when I deleted them they were also removed from my phone. How do I delete them from Google photos while still keeping them in my phone?

Hi,

Thanks for asking. In short, you can't delete from Google Photos online backup without deleting from your phone.

Google Photos was designed to sync changes across connected devices. 

In long answer, you can do this, but it takes very careful management on your part. To do what you want, you'd have to turn off back up and sync. 

Then manually delete the photos online and the changes should not sync. However, any photos you DO want backed up will have to be manually saved since the auto bank up is turned off. This involves your managing what you have and have not backed up. And it runs a great risk of losing photos you want saved.

My recommendation is to consider other areas where you can reclaim space:
1. Google Drive items no longer needed
2. Deleted emails and large attachments no longer needed
3. Consider saving photos in Storage Saver mode.

To access these ideas, go to Photos > Profile icon> Settings > Back up and sync, and look to the manage storage sections and backup size settings.

I need to know a bit about the sync mechanism between photos videos on my android mobile and my google account.

My photos videos including WhatsApp media is being backed up on my google account. Due to storage shortage on my mobile I deleted a lot of old whatsapp media which was around 10GB on device. Backup was always on so I also ran short on my google drive space.

Now that I have manually deleted around 10GB of WhatsApp media stuff from my mobile will deletions get sync with my google account too. Means will the locally deleted WhatsApp media be deleted from google account too automatically if no then how I free up space on my google drive. the stuff I deleted on local device I also do not want to keep on google drive. How?

The delete options on Android are as follows
  1. Free up space checks that a photo is backed up then deletes it from the local storage
  2. Delete in the Google Photos app using the trash
    • Deletes both the device copy and the backed up web copy
    • If internet access is available the photo is put in the web trash and is permanently deleted after 60 days
    • If Internet access is not available the photo is put in the app trash and is permanently deleted after 30 days or when the app data is deleted
  3. Delete in the app using the 3 dot option to Delete from the device, either singly or by selecting a batch
    • The photos remain backed up and can be seen both in the app and on the web
  4. Delete using a Gallery app (Gallery Go etc)
    • The photos remain backed up and can be seen both in the app and on the web

Thanks for explaining Delete options and flow in android.

What I understood is that there are more possibilities are to retain a backup on google account while deleting stuff from device.

I have deleted my stuff without using trash in app or on web. I just connected PC to my android and deleted unwanted stuff from WhatsApp media folders. Lot of storage space recovered now. 

The stuff I deleted from mobile is huge. Can't remember individual items. Now I want same stuff to be deleted from associated google account. Any possibility?

I could have repeat all deletions online but as I told I cleared around 10 GB of stuff. I can get a list of deleted filenames but it would be extremely cumbersome to search and delete each files manually.

My google pixel 4a recently died quite suddenly. I took it to a shop and they couldn't get it to turn on. They searched for any kind of damage, worked on it for a week, nothing. 
I got a new phone and went to set up my google photos and half of my photos and all of my videos are gone. 
There is no rhyme or reason to which photos were backed up and which weren't. One or two pictures from a day would be saved, but photos I knew I took on the same day were missing. And again, all my videos. 
All of my setting are set to back up EVERYTHING and I have no idea why it didn't work. I have two foster babies that my family took care of for 18 months who moved away last Christmas. The youngest was 18 months old when she left. All of my videos of her growing up are gone. 
Is there any hope at all that my videos are saved somewhere and I'm missing them?? I've checked all my other accounds and found nothing.
