I have an Iphone 13 pro max.  I noticed today that in the "recently added" section of google photos there were several photos added to yesterdays backup that I took several years ago and were backed up when I took them.  Why would it add random photos?  Also, why do the photos in "recently added" not appear on google photo main library?

I hesitated to reply because I don't use iOS, but since no one did ...
Some things that might help:
  • in the web app of Google Photos https://photos.google.com you can see in the info of a photo where it comes from 
  • When a photo does appear in today's "Recently added" it  means that an exact copy was not already uploaded. It is possible that today a slightly modified version is added, for example with some modified metadata. 
  • "Why do the photos in "recently added" not appear on google photo main library?"
    They should, but they will be at the "date taken" of the photo.

Locked folders can be accessed via the Google Photos app; Library; Utilities
 
Locked folders are only available on Android devices, and it is very easy to lose your photos if not very careful as there is no backup.
 
 
You can save sensitive photos and videos to a folder protected by your device screen lock in the Google Photos app. Items in Locked Folder won’t appear in the Photos grid, memories, search or albums and won’t be available to other apps on your device that have access to your photos and videos. 
Important:
  • This feature is only available on Android 6 and later.
  • People who have access to the device screen lock can unlock Locked Folder.
  • Items in your Locked Folder that are saved to your device aren’t moved to other devices during cable or cloud data transfers.
  • If you uninstall the Photos app or clear your Photos app data, you’ll lose all items in your Locked Folder. To save these items, remove them from Locked Folder before you make changes.

Hi! If I set up partner sharing with my someone else's gmail account, what happens if I delete the original picture from my side's account on google photos? I've seen google's help article which mentions "that any photos you save from partner sharing won't take up storage, unless your partner stops sharing their photos with you, or deletes the original copy." Does this mean that if I delete the original copy, it will be deleted from both accounts, or does it mean that if I delete the original copy, the photo will then instead start using storage on my partner's account? Just to be clear, I'm talking about deleting from the original account, not the partner (shared) account.
Basically, I want to clear out some storage space on my account, but I don't want my partner's account to lose all of our photos. If anyone could clear this up for me, or point me towards an answer, that would be great! Thanks!

Hello Logan,
 
There is currently a bug which prevents the storage being used in your account if the source account is disconnected. This may change any time in the future so if you suddenly see your storage jump it could mean they have fixed it.
 
Photos saved to the recipient account will not be deleted.

Regretfully, the video player in Google Photos doesn't offer any feature to adjust the speed of the video.
You will have to look for some proprietary video player like VLC.

I did not reply earlier because I always do this in the web app https://photos.google.com, which is different, but since no one did ... My version is not in English thus I have to guess the translation
  1. Open the photo in the Google photos app on Android
  2. Tap the Edit icon. You can now simply try "Improve"
  3. If not good enough, swipe Suggestions to the left and tap "Adjust"
  4. The first at the left is "Exposure". You can make the whole image lighter
  5. More to the right you should see
    • "Highlights" (or accents?) to make the light parts lighter
    • "Shadows" where the dark parts (text) can be made darker 
  6. You can also play with other options like contrast

When I try to add these retouched photos to an album they show up for a second then just disappear. It's very frustrating. I've tried adding them one at a time, all at once, adding from the camera roll and adding from the device folder. Nothing works. Please help me save my photos in an album so I can share them to my family.

-- I didn't have this option since the photos are already backed up (backup and sync is on for the device folder they are in + I have cellular backup on/ have waited multiple days). This did give me an idea though - I went in files and chanced all the file names from "Retouched_01.jpeg" (incrementing numbers up to 08) to "A_Retouched_01.jpeg" etc. Suddenly it seems like it is working when I add them to the album. This makes no sense but hey I'm happy since it seems to work now. Thanks for the help!

The "happy end" is an bit surprising. I successfully added another photo to an album after changing the name to Retouched_01.jpeg. Makes no sense indeed. Anyway: I am glad that your issue is solved.

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos community.

Can you go to photos.google.com, sign in with the same account on your phone, and see if the photos are there?  If so, then it is like a caching issue with your phone.  YOu can clear the app's cache and data (in Settings>Apps) and see if that resolves the issue.

If the photos are not online, then they either did not sync in the first place for some reason or they were deleted at some point.  Also, if you deleted the photos in the Google Photos app on your phone and did not use the Free Up Space feature, they could have been deleted.

You can extract a still frame from a video through these steps.
  • Tap to open the video
  • Tap once again to make the controls visible
  • Tap the edit icon at the bottom
  • Tap on the middle to make the frame selector visible.
  • Move the frame selector. You will see a preview of the frame above the selector. Once you decide about the right picture, tap on export. 
That frame will get saved as a still photo in your collection.

Next time I fired up Picasa, it began (apparently) re-importing all my .mp4s (there are hundreds). Now when I open .mp4s in Picasa they are rotated 90 degrees counter-clockwise. How can I fix this?
