I've two different groups of faces for the same person. I'd like to merge them, however although I've given them the same name (with the same spelling), I've not had 'merge faces' suggested to me which is how Google suggests I should do it. Is there a manual way of merging groups?

I'm using android currently but could use a desktop if that'd help. I've updated my app.

Answer:

Hi, User 17865296078509446342

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your post.

I suggest the following steps to merge two albums in the Peoples group.
On any desktop PC, open the link https://photos.google.com/people.
Click to open the first album.
Add a name to that person. Pick the correct one through your contacts.
Click to open the second album
Add the same name as above to this album.
A new window will pop up asking you whether that's the same or a different person. Affirm that & complete the action.

Question: How to stop Google Photos syncing with my "My Pictures" folder on my desktop computer?

Not sure if previous answer is Android or web. Can't "disconnect " MyPictures from sync

Hi Wendy,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Forum.

It looks like you're trying to unsync Google Photos folder from the device to your Google Drive and vice versa. If yes, here are the steps that would help you to do so:
  • Choose what to sync to Google Drive:
    • On your computer, click Backup and Sync.
    • Click More.
    • Select Preferences.
    • At the right, click the folders you want to sync.
    • To add a folder not on the list, click Choose folder.
    • Add the folder you want to sync.
    • Click OK.
  • Choose what to sync from Google Drive:
    • On your computer, click Backup and Sync.
    • Click More.
    • Select Preferences.
    • At the left, click Google Drive.
    • Click Sync My Drive to this computer.
    • Choose if you want to: Sync everything in My Drive or Sync only these folders.
    • Click OK.
For more information, please check the Help Center Article on changing Backup and Sync settings.

Hope this helps.

Hi Ikramy,

The only copy of the photos in the Locked Folder is on the lost mobiles, so if you no longer have them the photos can't be recovered. You can only try to locate the mobiles with Android's Find My Device tool https://www.google.com/android/find

Question: Huawei P20 Pro mode compatiblity

The P20 Pro has a motion shot, very similar to the 'motion' shots in the pixel 2. Syncing the p20 photos to GPhotos makes it a normal photo.
Similary, they have a 3d panorama which also doesnt play nice with google photos - only just see the edge of the panorama.

is there a set of standards that google sends to these manufacturers so that compatibility is maintained. i love and use google photos as my standard gallery, but these types of quirks make it a tad bit irritating

Answer:

Hi Shahil,

I'm sorry,

Google Photos supports only the motion shot and 3D panorama formats of the Google Camera and other Google apps. Other manufacturers can likely use the same formats if they want.

Hi! I have a Galaxy S10+ on which I've added an SD card. All my photos are stored there. Even if the backup runs smoothly and I can see all my picture on photos, they are not afterwards deleted from the SD card. I have tried a loooot of steps, up until this point where i'm reaching out, maybe somebody can help. I have tried readding the permission individually to the SD card- DCIM- Camera folders. Everything is updated, I gave all the permissions for the Photos app to the storage. Cleared cached, uninstall/reinstall... Enabled logs on my phone, nothing strange there...any ideas what to do?

Google Photos doesn't free up space from SD cards.
The Google Photos team has created the "free up space" feature to work on Phones internal memory only.

Hi, Asima Siddiqua

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your post.

The free up option removes the originals of pics from the phone.
That creates space to capture new photos.
Restoring the backed up pictures would be defeating the whole purpose of the free up space exercise.

To bring back the pics to your phone's gallery either, you can download photos one by one.
Regrettably, there is no option to download the photos in bulk.

Alternatively, you can install the Google One app. There is a one time option to restore up to two hundred most recent photos to the device.
However, that will not restore the local folder structure.
There is no requirement to join Google One. The option is available to everyone.
However, the method may not be helpful to recover something when the count is more than two hundred.

Or, you can arrange for a bulk download by visiting the link https://takeout.google.com/.
Select the Google Photos app for data download.
Once the file is ready, you will get an email. Access that & unzip all the attachments into your phone's gallery. However, you have to ensure your phone has free space more than the size of the downloaded zip file.

That will bring everything to your phone.
