First of you should check the Trash; any photos that were previously backed up and deleted less than 60 days ago will be in there.

 

Once you delete them from the trash they are permanently deleted; they are only recoverable in 60 days if they are still in the trash. 

 

You could try using a third party photo recovery app at this point to try to recover some of what was lost from your phone - just type photo recovery into the play store and see what options are available.

Usually, the device used to capture a photo or video adds the timestamp automatically.

However, you can edit that through Google Photos.

The below is the text appearing on the official help page.

Change date & time stamps,

 

You can change the date and time stamps for photos and videos through a desktop PC. 

When you change the date and time of your photo, the edited date and time will appear in Google Photos. But if you share it with other apps or download it, it may show the original date and time saved by your camera.

1. On your computer, go to photos.google.com.
2. Place your cursor over a photo or video. To select the items you want to update, click Select.
3. At the top right, click More.
4. Click Edit date & time. For multiple selections, you will see two options:-

• • To specify a date and time for the first item and automatically adjust the dates and times for the other pics relative to that, click Shift dates & times.
  • To set the date and time for all the selected items, click Set one date & time.

1. Follow the instructions to finish.

However, the modified date will remain on the cloud only. If you download the picture, that will show the original date or no date.

I went through enormous difficulties in Dubai expo (3 hours waiting time in some pavilions in scorching heat) and when back home all I see is 1.3 MB vidoe files when original was 24 MB! Before you blame me for not setting it up correctly,  there is no question of any such setting in any backup mechanism ever! Then it is not backup call it something else. I am reduced to ashes⚱️ . I can't believe I paid google for this service.

Next, are you saying like so?

You shared a pic with someone.

That person sent it back to you.

Now you downloaded that again & you worry that picture will occupy space in your account.

 

First, if the sender has not changed your picture, the photos app will not upload that.

However, if there are even some minor changes, the app will upload the picture & that will start occupying space in your account.
