Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your post.
 
The free up option removes the originals of pics from the phone.
That creates space to capture new photos.
Restoring the backed up pictures would be defeating the whole purpose of the free up space exercise.
 
To bring back the pics to your phone's gallery either, you can download photos one by one.
Regrettably, there is no option to download the photos in bulk.
 
Alternatively, you can install the Google One app. There is a one time option to restore up to two hundred most recent photos to the device.
However, that will not restore the local folder structure.
There is no requirement to join Google One. The option is available to everyone. 
However, the method may not be helpful to recover something when the count is more than two hundred.
 
Or, you can arrange for a bulk download by visiting the link https://takeout.google.com/.
Select the Google Photos app for data download.
Once the file is ready, you will get an email. Access that & unzip all the attachments into your phone's gallery. However, you have to ensure your phone has free space more than the size of the downloaded zip file.
 
That will bring everything to your phone.

I don't have firsthand experience with this (I suspect that few people here do)..  But this would probably be helpful:

There are also other articles online which you can search for.
 
 Don't use ~iCloud Photo Library and Google Photos for backup simultaneously because they use different approaches to data management and the risk of loss is VERY high. 
 
Other opinions are welcome.
 
It is always a good idea to store important images in more than one place / tool.  My photos are in Google Photos, on my laptop, and on multiple external disk drives (not connected to any computer or network).

Hello Naba Khan,
Welcome to Google Photos Community.
 
Photos under the locked folder are stored offline and on device. And only visible from the same device from which you have setup the locked folder. 
 
If you cleared the data or uninstall the Google photos or format the device  then photos inside locked folder are automatically deleted and once deleted they are permanently deleted it cannot be recovered.

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Forum.

Could you please confirm what exactly are you referring to when you say remove gallery thumbnail?

In the meantime, I recommend trying the steps below in sequence, this may help in fixing the issue:
  • Make sure your device is up-to-date.
  • Make sure the App is up-to-date.
  • Try restarting the App through the following steps:
    • Go to your App Settings.
    • Click stop on the afflicted App with the Force Stop button.
    • Wait a few seconds to make sure the App has stopped processing, and then attempt to re-start it.
  • Close the background running apps through the following steps:
    • Go to your App Settings.
    • Display the Active Apps on your device.
    • Select the App you wish to close and Force Stop it.
    • Repeat this step with all active Apps.
  • Try clearing your App cache through the following steps:
    • Tap the system Settings tab on the main screen of your device.
    • Tap the General section of settings that is on the far right.
    • Tap Storage in the General tab.
    • Clear the cache data once storage calculates the data.
    • Back out of the storage section. 
    • Tap Applications and find the application in question.
    • Tap the application and clear the cache (if available).
    • Clear the data for the application if there is no cache to clear.
    • Exit the settings screen and restart the device.

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your post.
 
To hide your video, either you can archive that. Then, that wouldn't be visible immediately through the gallery view.
Or, if you have received the update of the "Locked folder", add the video to that. 
Here is the help desk article explaining how to use the locked folder.
 
 
Nevertheless, the pics in the locked folder remain on the device only. 
The app will remove that from everywhere, including cloud storage. If you forget the pin, lose the device, or factory reset your phone, you will lose the content forever with no option to recover thatl.
