There shouldn't be any problem uploading pics from Google Drive to Google Photos.

When I am travelling, I connect my camera to my Android phone. 
Next, I copy the newer pics to Google Drive & then upload those to Google Photos.
That's because the Google Photos app can't recognise any external storage connected to the phone through USB & then I have to go through the step.

 

Nevertheless, can you try uploading in batches?
Or try doing so through some desktop PC?

Now you can stop a video playing in the thumbnail view.

 

However, first, check whether you have got the latest version of the app.

Next,

• Tap your profile icon.
• Tap photos settings.
• Tap "Phot grid playback".
• Tap the sliders in front of "Videos" & "Motion Photos" to move them towards the left & grey out.

That will stop the videos from playing while in the thumbnail view.

The editor in the Google Photos app allows corrections in the orientation of pictures.

To do so, please follow these steps through the phone app.

• Tap to open the picture
• Tap on the edit icon below the picture
• Tap on menu option Crop.
• Tap on the rotation symbol for achieving a turn through ninety degrees. Each successive tap will add ninety degrees going through 90 -> 180 -> 270 -> and again back to 360 degrees. 
• That will help you correct sideways or upside-down orientations.
• If you wish to fine-tune, move the slider above the rotation symbol. That helps in correcting slight misorientations at an increment of one degree.

However, if the pics captured through your camera need rotation correction, I suggest you either reinstall the camera app or seek the help of some repair technician.

 

However, if you do not find the rotate symbol in the edit mode, upload a screenshot of that view.

I have turned off back up and sync for both my iPhone and my iPad, I have tried accessing it from different locations, but no matter what whenever I delete a photo from Google Photos, it also delete from my phone and iPad. It's also still backing up photos from my phone even though I don't want it to. When using the iOS google photos app, I noticed that the albums tab only shows the shared album and the other non-shared albums are missing. This is only about albums, the photos tab shows all photos as expected regardless of which album they are associated to.

Is the iOS normal behavior to only show shared albums in the albums tab?

Is there a setting option anywhere to show/hide all other albums?

I tired that already, but it does not change the app behavior.

I also tried to share one of the previously not shared albums and suddenly the album becomes visible in the iOS app. All the same, if I remove the share option from the album, it disappears from the iOS app. So, it really looks that systematically only shared albums are shown in the iOS app.

Regretfully, the app doesn't show the details about albums to which a photo belongs.

 

However, you can find that through the web link https://photos.google.com

Tap to open any photo & tap on the circled letter "I" at the top.

That will show the album association information.

 

Alternatively, try adding the photo to the desired album through the photos app. The app will not take action if the pic is already in that.
