Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your post.

 

You can't connect an external hard drive to the phone directly.

However, you can connect both the external drive & the phone to a PC & then transfer the content.

 

The easiest way to transfer the photos from the phone to a PC is by connecting through the USB port.

Once done, select the option "Data transfer" out of the ones offered by the pop-up message in the notification panel.

 

Alternatively, if your phone manufacturer has provided some app to backup the media, look for that. Samsung & HTC offer such facilities.

Also, if you use Windows PC, the Photos app can collect all the pics on your phone & transfer them to your PC seamlessly.

 

Nevertheless, if you have freed up space on your phone, you can do so through Google Photos using the following options.

 

You can download photos by accessing the link https://photos.google.com through any browser on your PC. Select multiple pics through shift key + mouse & tap the three dots to see the download option.

 

Or, you can arrange for a bulk download by visiting the link https://takeout.google.com/.

Select the Google Photos app for data download.

Once the file is ready, you will get an email. Access that & unzip all the attachments on your hard disk.

Delete pictures (also from trash) are not present in your Google Archive anymore either (see https://get.google.com/albumarchive) and especially the autobackup-section is used in Take-out. 

So they will not be there either and repeating is useless.

I want my photos back on my phone, not uploaded to Google photos or storage. Please help! I have a pixel but I decided to try freeing up space, everything is out of order, I've lost entire folders. I hate this system and it won't let me go back. How do I do this? To change the settings as if I didn't free up space

It is not logical to have an expensive Pixel and not using Google Photos as it should be used - not only for safety, but also for sharing and building thematic albums. 

So your approach is like having an old computer and your free-up action has cleaned this computer and now you only have an endless stream at Google without having any albums which would have survived. 

 

There is no bulk method available that will download all back from cloud into their original folders and the simpliest thing you can do is to install the Google One app temporarily to get 200 recent back, probably in the folder named Restored. And then start thinking about a better (and more comfortable) way of organising, because there always will come a moment that you will need to clean-up again. 

 

Sorry: no Google here to blame and we can't help that they are bad teachers.

It's not that my folders were unorganised. It's just when everything was saved directly on my device (e.g photos taken on camera, downloading images from the internet, screenshots etc) everything was saved under the appropriate folder. Now that I have saved everything to Google photos to "free up space" with yes my "expensive pixel" it's removed all those folders. It's conflated all my images into one big photo album under "photos". By doing so I have lost other folders I have created myself to organise some of my favourite pictures.

That's why I said that Google is a bad teacher and generally people are bad students too. 

But this forum is run by volunteers and nobody ask us how to build a wise photo-collection before unboxing their new phone. 

From start Google should have made very clear that on Android and especially on their Pixels, the Google Photos app is the central media manager and that you should build thematic webalbums instead of folders, just because these are safely kept at Google and not on your dangerous phone only. 

 

But Google is a bad student also, so they could have known since years that people go on with their oldmodish ideas or are misleaded by other big companies like Samsung, which talk about "albums" while it are folders. And they also did not provide an easy button for converting a folder into a synced webalbum like on Picasa on the good old days. 

And they also do not warn much more clearly what free-up space is going to do, else you would not have done it. But then you are responsible for keeping enough free space on your phone yourself. 

 

Sorry, I (we) can't make it better then it is now. But you still are able to start building albums instead of new folders (unless automatic folders): just start a new album on the library-page, name it and choose Add photos and then start to select in the mainstream shown. And new photos shooted can be added to an album immediately. The photos stay in the mainstream and the albums only contain links.

Photos are sorted on date only, but in the Photo-page in  reverse chronological order. But if you start a new album on the Library page, you should name that album and then add suitbale pictures from your stream that are dedicated to some event like Christmas. And in that album the images will be in chronological order and in most cases that is the same as in alphabetic order of the filenames. 

So tell us if you have some special application when you need to sort on filenames, because that is impossible within the Google Photos app, but possible in Google Drive or OneDrive. 

Please come back to discuss, because your situation can be extremely complex.
