I have a 128gb SD card that I like to have all of my photos and videos on. My family likes to take lots of photos and long videos that turn out to be over 9gb per video. In my Android photos I moved that particular video to my SD card then went and saw that Google was over capacity for backup storage due to the video. So I deleted it in Google photos but it also removed it from my SD card. Now I cannot restore it in Google because I only have 1.4gb left but 79gb left in my SD. And for some reason it isn't in my trash on the Android photos so I can't just restore it there. First off how do I get Google away from touching my SD and backing up unnecessary things that are already backed up by me? Second off how do I recover something they deleted when I can't go over capacity? Do i just have to not allow Google to touch anything?

MPEG2 video files also have the same ".ts" extension.

Nevertheless, any reason to store the typescript files on your phone?

You need to store all your typescript files in a separate folder.

Next, create a dummy file and name that as .nomedia (no name but file extension nomedia)

 

That will hide the content from the gallery view.

Backing up your photos to Google Photos should not delete them from the device. Did you use "Free up space" ? 

Anyway, you can download them back to the device, but not automatically to the folder where they come from.  See  Download from Google Photos to (mobile) device

The short answer is in the Google Photos app, tap your profile photo (or icon) in the upper right hand corner then "Free up space".

Warning: 

Normally deleting from phone would not delete in the Google Photos app because the empty places will get filled by your copies at Google. But if that does not happen, at least a part of your collection is not backupped and that is a usual pittfall on iPhones because their users are working with their cameraroll daily and seldom start the Google-app for checking if their backup is completed (you can see that under the small circle right-up) or for creating albums that can be shared. 

 

Thereby the Free-up space function can't do its work properly, until the backup is completed. 

So you may need to come back for further discussion. 

 

PS: normally Free-up space will remove all local pictures, but then they also removed from iCloud if that function was switched-on. And they go in Apple trash for 30 days until they are deleted permanently. When some are recovered from this trash before 30 days, they will not get duplicated on Google Photos. 

 

PS: it are wise words to have a second backup at hand on computer, but many have no idea how to do that - even if they have a computer. But when it is a Mac(book), iCloud synchronises automatically and then it becomes far more easy to setup a much more valuable photocollection then on phone only. 

That's possible with a Windows-computer also, but a bit less usual.

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your post.

 

Once you activate sync, you should never delete pics straightforwardly.

Deleting something from your phone will remove that from Google photos also.

 

Now before proceeding to delete something, please go through these steps first.

• Tap the library -> Photos on device -> View all. Ensure you do not see a cloud symbol on any folder unless you intentionally skip those from the backup.
• Tap your profile icon & check whether you find a message "backup complete".
• Next, visit the site https://photos.google.com & verify all the latest pics are visible there.
• Additionally, create a local backup by copying the content to some external HDD or USB.

Once you are through all the steps above, you can delete the pics through the following steps ensuring to retain one on the cloud.

• Use some file manager or gallery app to delete the photo. 

If not, you can delete it through the Google Photos app by following these steps.

• Tap to open the pic either through the photos tab or on your Android phone through Library - Folder.
• Tap the three dots at the top left corner or slide up.
• Tap the option "Delete from device".

That will ensure your cloud copy remains intact.
