There can be multiple reasons for the backup not to happen.

 

# The quantum of photos to be backed is high.

# Insufficient free space on the phone for the app to work.

# WIFI connectivity is intermittent. Too many devices on the same router are restricting the bandwidth.

# Download & upload speeds are too asymmetric.

# Google Photos app is not allowed to use:-

• Data in the background
• Mobile data
• Mobile data while roaming

# Activation of data saver through the settings.

# Putting a limit on the daily use of mobile data through the settings in the app.

# Putting a limit on the use of total data in a month through the settings in the phone.

# Activating battery saver or super saver mode.

# Existence a zero byte file in the collection. 

# Bloatware on the phone interfering with the smooth working of apps.

# Too many apps running in the background.

When a photo is not uploaded to your account, for example a photo shared with you, there is no "People" information available. When you save the photo to your account Google should after some time identify faces and try to add them to a group. You will then also be able to edit that info.

The safest way to clear device storage is to use Free up space by tapping your account icon top right to choose that option. The app will only remove photos after checking if they are backed up first at Photos - Google Photos - Tap here

 

Note that the photos will no longer be available to view in your gallery and might not be available to choose from Social media apps. WhatsApp currently has access, Facebook currently does not. Unsure about others, but still possible to share to apps from inside Google Photos

 

Happy to explain more if the Free up space option causes a problem.

Change date & time stamps

 

You can change the date and time stamps for photos and videos through a computer. 

When you change the date and time of your photo, the edited date and time will appear in Google Photos. But if you share it with other apps or download it, it may show the original date and time saved by your camera.

1. On your computer, go to photos.google.com.
2. Place your cursor over a photo or video. To select the items you want to update, click Select.
3. At the top right, click More.
4. Click Edit date & time. For multiple selections, you will see two options:-

• • To specify a date and time for the first item and automatically adjust the dates and times for the other pics relative to that, click Shift dates & times.
  • To set the date and time for all the selected items, click Set one date & time.

However, the modified date will remain on the cloud only. If you download the picture, that will show the original date or no date.

You can find info about storage used and files using most storage in different places:

• https://one.google.com/storage how much storage is used by Drive, Gmail or Photos
• https://photos.google.com/quotamanagement shows large files, blurry photos, screenshots
• https://one.google.com/storage/management shows deleted (= in trash bin), large and other items like "unsupported videos"using most storage. 
• https://drive.google.com/drive/quota largest files in Drive

Storage used by Google Photos can be recovered:

• By deleting photos/videos, but note that photos/videos uploaded with setting "High Quality" before June 1, 2021 does not recover any storage since they did not use any.  There are complaints that it may take very long before the storage is recovered, if ever, which may at least partially be due to deleting items which do not use storage. 
• The folder "Google Photos" in Google Drive starts using storage when the corresponding photos in Google Photos are deleted. Thus when you delete from Photos you may also have to delete the Google Photos folder in https://drive.google.com/drive/my-drive if you have one.
• By using "Recover storage" on https://photos.google.com/settings. That will convert ALL (it's all or nothing) photos/videos to "Storage saver" quality, using less storage. Save the ones you want to keep in original size somewhere else before you use this option.
  Recover Storage is no longer available as an option when you are a Google One Subscriber, but if you switch from Original Quality to Storage saver, you will be prompted to recover storage.
• By deleting unsupported videos on https://photos.google.com/unsupportedvideos (or via "Settings")
• You can also check on https://get.google.com/albumarchive. There may be photos that are not shown in Google Photos, for example from Hangouts, which may use storage.

The safest way to delete from Google Photos is to delete the Google Photos app and delete the photos at https://photos.google.com/

The camera roll photos will not be affected.

 

If you need to reinstall the app do not enable Back up & sync.
