You might want to check your device folders and disable that folder from automatically backing up to Google photos

To be more clear: on the Album-page you can see a row named Pictures on device and that are the device folders. Open the one showing these gifs or orther messaged pictures and swith-off Backup-up top right. 
If you want have a certain picture backupped, open it and choose Backup under its 3 dots.

Hi Jon,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community!

Just wanted to let you know that usually, Assistant suggests creations in the form of collage or animation. These creations are saved under Albums section of Google Photos within the respective folders.

All the creations rendered by Assistant are completely fresh and can be considered as a separate file on Google Photos. They neither replace the original file nor a duplicate of it.

You may want to go through this Help Center article for more information on managing your assistant cards.

My question was very clearly about stylised photos in particular. They end up at the END of the album which is not what I'd want in an scenario. Ideally I'd have the choice for either the stylised version to replace the original and STAY in the same position to maintain the order of photos I had before or to create a second file NEXT to the original photo, again to maintain an order. Having stylised photos randomly plonked at the end of an album is an inconvenience to say the least.

Thanks for writing back to me. I understand your desire to have the stylised photos in your album either to replace the original one and occupy it's space or create a second copy next to the original photo.

In this case, I'd suggest you share your feedback directly with the Google Photos development team. Because,  if there are any other improvements or ideas you've about Google Photos, you can always leave them under Help & Feedback and they will reach the developers directly. Here's how you can do it:
  1. Open the Google Photos app on a mobile device or go to photos.google.com using a computer.
  2. At the top left, touch or click the menu icon > Help & Feedback.
  3. Touch or click Feedback. You can tell us things like:
  • What you like or dislike about the app.
  • Things that are confusing or don't work.

Also, it helps us understand your feedback if you check the box to include screenshots and logs.

I had the same issue for photos I edited myself but it appears that Google saves them into a new album - for me this album is called PhotosEditor. I agree it would be nice to see them side by side with the originals in the photos tab

There was never any option to delete the seemingly duplicate files.
Further, Google Photos never uploads the same picture multiple times.
What we see as duplicates have some differences in file format or metadata.
Additionally, if you have activated Raw + JPEG capture or bracketing in your phone app, that would create duplicates.
 
Regrettably, Google Photos doesn't provide any means to remove the apparent duplicates. You have to search those manually.
 
However, you will find some tips in the following article compiled by experts with comprehensive experience on how to avoid duplicate photos & how to remove those.

Since Google drive and photos were disconnected in July,  I have not been able to easily move pictures onto my hard drive.  Is there a way to move photos to drive?

Answer:

The most easiest way is by not wanting to use Google Drive at all because all what can be done (like sharing selected pics with Drive) will use unnecessary space in your account. 
But you don't tell why you need your pictures on pc also, because the way it was done until July was buggy and dangerous. So if you were using the Drive-section of the backup & sync app, the first step to make it more safe, is by switching-off the downsyncing from the Google Photos folder. 
Next you need to tell us what you were doing with the pic on your pc and if you have a Windows(10) PC.

The photos I saved on the cloud that didn't count towards my 15 gb of free storage on my account. I have photos and videos I saved on there that's from all the way back to 2014 and over 100 gb. I want to hopefully find them and recover them if possible. Cause I'm worried and stressed our that their permanently gone now.

Deleting the App (not the photos) does not delete normally stored images in Google Photos (Locked Folders may be a different matter but I don't even try to keep up-to-date on that drama)...
 
You should be able to see your images at:
(Just make sure that you are logged into the correct Google (probably Gmail) account).
 
Just log in and check, and hopefully that will reduce any stress.
 
It is always a good idea to store important images in more than one place / tool.  My photos are in Google Photos, on my laptop, and on multiple external disk drives (not connected to any computer or network).
