I've attempted to back up and sync photos but it only backs up what's on my SD card, but I desperately need the data (pictures, videos, music) that was on my now broken phone. i don't remember ever actively backing up the photos, but my google account was synced to my phone, and I'd often get notifications from a google app categorising my photos based on the location and date etc. (e.g Sunday morning in finsbury park), so does it mean it did back up the data? why can't i find it? Please i need help ASAP

Hi, Alaa Mamdoh

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your post.

The free up option removes the originals of pics from the phone.
That creates space to capture new photos.
Restoring the backed up pictures would be defeating the whole purpose of the free up space exercise.

To bring back the pics to your phone's gallery either, you can download photos one by one.
Regrettably, there is no option to download the photos in bulk.

Alternatively, you can install the Google One app. There is a one time option to restore up to two hundred most recent photos to the device.
However, that will not restore the local folder structure.
There is no requirement to join Google One. The option is available to everyone.
However, the method may not be helpful to recover something when the count is more than two hundred.

Or, you can arrange for a bulk download by visiting the link https://takeout.google.com/.
Select the Google Photos app for data download.
Once the file is ready, you will get an email. Access that & unzip all the attachments into your phone's gallery. However, you have to ensure your phone has free space more than the size of the downloaded zip file.

That will bring everything to your phone.

Answer:

Dear Google,
Your photo storage is terribly confusing. And I'm beginning to wonder if that is on purpose so you can just keep selling people storage subscriptions. I have lost over 4000 pictures by "freeing up space". It is NOT clear that this will delete photos from your phone/memory card. I am done using Google photos and will move on to a different provider even if I need to pay a subscription.

Answer:

I am having the same problem now. My Samsung A51 after the latest update was draining my battery fast, I saw the Google One and I upgraded my account so that I can backup my photo's and keep them there for redundancy.
Redundancy,  Google? You know what that means, you have servers and you do it also.
Surprise like in Samuel L Jackson voice dubbed  when I hard reset my phone and I found out there's no GOD Damn option to restore everything back to my phone, but I manually have to download everything.
What type of monkeys are working in Google One software development department? I mean, we all know not everyone is shooting 20.000 photo's and there should be an option to restore also the photo's on your phone  IF YOU WANT IT.

Thanks for ruining my day, I will make sure to cancel my subscription until you bring this feature to smartphones .
We want the option to download back/restore backed up photo's and video as a bulk, not just manually!

You should review the information on the official Google Photos Help page about the Locked Folder feature. Everything is explained there.

Here are some important points about using the Locked Folder:
  • Items in Locked Folder won’t appear in the Photos grid, memories, search or albums and won’t be available to other apps on your device that have access to your photos and videos.
  • This feature is only available on Android 6 and later.
  • People who have access to the device screen lock can unlock Locked Folder.
  • Items in your Locked Folder that are saved to your device are not moved to other devices during cable or cloud data transfers.
  • Cloud backups of these items will be deleted.
  • Locked Folder items are not transferred in USB-USB device transfers and are not kept when you factory reset your device or clear app data.
  • If you uninstall the Photos app or clear your Photos app data, you’ll lose all items in your Locked Folder. To save these items, remove them from Locked Folder before you make changes.
There are other important things you should know about using the Locked Folder, so I suggest you visit the page and read the Help information.

Hi, MikeandKaren Johnstone

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your post.

I believe you are using Windows PC.
Then, you can block the webpage https://photos.google.com within all browsers available on your phone & desktop PC so that you do not visit that site again accidentally.
Or you can edit the Host file to redirect https://photos.google.com to your home page.

For example, I use the app BlackPlayer Ex to play music and when one of my albums doesn't have cover art it can download it. But every time it downloads a cover the cover shows up as a new album in Google Photos. So I have like 20 albums that are just one photo. It's very annoying. Please help me

Answer:

Open google photos app, tap the menu on the left and choose device folders. Are each of these folders set to sync? If so disable sync for the folders you dont want.

Answer:

When I click device folders this is what I see. Not sure where to click off on syncing

Answer:

This is what i see when I tap into a folder. There is no slider.

Answer:

Ahh, so it's not actually saving albums, it's just the albums view again shows 'photos on device'.

And no, the Photos app is acting like a Gallery app, so it will always show every pic file saved to phone as that is it's function.

You're only option is to either stop the album art from being saved to your phone (depends on app it is coming from) *OR* you can put a .nomedia file in each folder, which hides the folder/directory from Gallery apps. If all those music player folders are in 1 directory, it would be easy to hide the entire directory with a .nomedia file.

Other wise there is nothing else to do.

Answer:

Thank you for the quick response.  Does anyone know if this will ever be a piece of functionality that google photos provides?  I imagine it is a pretty popular task that people want with this service.

Answer:

I don't know why Google insist on being so unreasonable and removing all options to get Public Albums. When albums were uploaded with Picasa there was a public option that truly was public and anyone with a link to the album archive could see them; although Picasa still works it won't upload now. Google are driving me away from using Google.

Some look-alikes (that is something different then duplicates) is no drama, but thousands would be.

In group photos, face grouping recognizes some people and not others, even if those unrecognized have been recognized (and named) elsewhere. And it certainly often doesn't acknowledge new people. Hence I find that I've been letting face grouping do its thing where it can, but for those unrecognized I name them in the description field. Fine. But should I use the description field to name even those people whose faces have been grouped and acknowledged by the app? I'm worried that given the buggy nature of facial grouping I may lose all of this data at some point and I should probably bite the bullet and name them manually in the description field as well.

Answer:

Unless you have experienced different behavior, it is likely safe to assume that Google will continue properly to group faces that it got right in the first place. Your experience of the algorithm being imperfect is shared by other users, but I'm unaware of anyone reporting an image once correctly grouped losing its group.

Let me know if this helps (and if it does please select the Recommend button below to help other users with similar problems).

Answer:

Thanks for the answer. Very reassuring. But what if facial grouping gets switched off by accident?  There seems to be some suggestion on these boards that if you switch it off, it might not come back. Or is it simply that it might take a long time, so it just seems to some that it's not coming back?

Answer:

Yes, I suppose if you turned off Face Grouping off then when you turn it back on the algorithm could malfunction when it reloaded the groups. And to be clear, there is no guarantee that it won't malfunction even if you never turn it off, it's just that I think either event is unlikely. The more typical problems with Face Grouping is that it takes time for the servers to catch up to users collections and then can't properly identify some faces. I am unaware of faces once properly identified going askew.

Answer:

Like for Lobalobo, Face Grouping always worked well for me, but there are numerous complaints that it stopped working, which also can mean that you just have to be patient.

But instead of adding the names in the Description field, I would rather create an album. You can add multiple selected photos in one go, and they do not appear on the screen when you browse. And you can with a few clicks add all the photos of the Face group or better: make it a so-called "Live" album (Automatically add photos of selected people & pets) so that photos from the face group are automatically added.
