You can edit dates on your photos, but its a tedious job. ALways check if your camera have the right date set, before shooting photos. There is also a program who can bulk edit all in one go. I will find the name..

I accidentally deleted photos from Gallery. They are not in Trash. I can see them in Google Photos. There is supposed to be some kind of Restore button but I don't have one. Where is it??? Help!

Answer:

Your photos are backed up to Google Photos, and selected photos can be downloaded back to the device. See   Download from Google Photos to (mobile) device

Answer:

"I want the photos to go back to Gallery, where the rest of my photos are."
The photos are not in the Google Photos trash bin, because they are not deleted from Google Photos.
There is also no "restore button" for this in Google Photos, but you can download them back to the device. Because the Google Photos app on Android does not support batch downloading (it only supports one by one by opening the photo, tap 3-dots > Download) I gave you the link to an article with a few work arounds. Unfortunately that does not bring them to the same folders where they come from.

Also note that they may be in the trash bin on your device. See for example:
That would be the easiest way to restore them.

I have some pics that were took of me years ago, in the last month alot of pictures were added to my photo app, but they were all the exact same pic of me that were taken 2 yrs ago, however the photo reads as if it was taken a couple of days ago, and all were took at 3 am when i didn't even have my phone- my ex had it.  How can I go to these pics 'of me?' and see what the original pic was

Answer:

I read your post a few times but I think that I do not get exactly what the problem is. You talk about photos taken years ago, 2 years ago and a couple of days ago. Are these all the same photos?
If these photos were scanned from old paper photos they have no "Date taken". The date of the scan or the date of uploading or making a copy may be used in that case.

Can you please try to give some more information?

Hi Googlers,
I am on the basic 15GB Drive storage. I found that my Photos are set to back up in original quality.
Opening my acct in PC, I changed this setting to HQ for unlimited storage, and then clicked Recover Storage.

It appears photos have been compressed since the message "...are being compressed..." displayed after clicking Recover Storage is no longer present. And I am prompted "...you can only Recover Storage once a day" when I tried repeating.
Original Quality option now prompts around 12GB; it seems the space for backing up the photos has been cleared.

Problem however is when I checked Drive (logging out and back in), storage still indicates full.

Please help. Thank you.

Answer:

You should check at https://www.google.com/settings/storage

Then you should see that Photos takes zero due to Recover storage, but you still have a lot on Drive which can't be compressed and maybe Gmail also.

Goodnight from here.

Answer:

SOLVED.

Thank you. Yes, the Drive storage is now free of photo backup and consistent with storage for Photos in Google One now 0GB.
The steps to change the Photo backup from Original to HQ, and Recover Storage are okay.
Drive storage just needed a short time to refresh in PC and device.

Thanks again.

How do I retrive a video from a Picasa link: http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/lh/photo/KHGd-4puSPzPdZppMJq3sw?authkey=pmzV5Tq1CiI

The video was uploaded when Picasa was initially launched and I believe the video is over 10years old. This has sentimental value as I have had a data corruption and looking through my backups to retrieve some of the old photos and videos

This video does not seem to be listed in my google photos when the migration was done from Picasa to Google photos. Any idea how to retrieve the video from the original link?

Thanks

Answer:

Basically everything you have had on Picasaweb is now on https://get.google.com/albumarchive, but you need to log-in with the account you have used right-up in Picasa in those years and that may differ from your actual Google account. Best to open that link in the incognitowindow of your browser to avoid conflicts with cookies.
That's all that can be said about.
Good luck / Rinus

Hello Colleen,

Thanks for stopping by the Google Photos Support Community.

Does the same album show the correct photos in viewed in Google Photos? Can you have somebody's else access the link from they Facebook account?

Meanwhile, please try sharing the link to a different social media platform (if possible) to check if you encounter the same issue.

Hi Janet,

Check for any outstanding application for Google Products in the App store.

Check for operating system updates.

Check that you are not critical on storage space.

If still having problems,  clear the cache and data:    (note: this does not delete photos from your phone or the cloud)
  1. on your Android device, open the Settings app
  2. tap Apps (or Application Manager)
  3. tap Google Photos

I dragged photos I wanted to upload from iPhoto to Google Photos onto the Google Photos window within Safari. It showed a blue screen with clouds and said I should just put the files there. Then my Mac crashed and the photos have disappeared from iPhoto and they're not in Google Photos. They're not in iPhoto trash and I can't find them anywhere on my Mac. Please help, these were precious photos!!

Answer:

Hello Bente,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Help Forum.

I understand and I'll be happy to help. It can be possible that the photos weren't uploaded successfully to Google Photos (cloud) and also make sure you're logged in to Google Photos with the same Google Account that you used during the backup. Photos/videos that are not synced or backed up, will still appear in Google Photos and will have this icon  (which means not synced/backed up) or some photos/videos will also show up with the two arrows in a circle mean backup is in progress.

Once the upload is complete there will be no icon on any photos/videos. Often, many of us misinterpret that they are all backed up because the photos/videos show up in Google Photos and we over see the icons on each photo/video. If the photos/videos weren't backed up they cannot be deleted from the Google Photos library nor Trash.

In case, you are uploading a large amount of data (photos/videos), please know that it might take 24-48 hours for the photos and videos to sync across all devices. Please ensure to have 'Backup & sync' enabled on the Google Photos settings while you're backing up your photos and videos. To check is the content is backed up, login in to photos.google.com to checked for your backed up photos and videos.

However, if you're sure they were backed up, I recommend you looking for your video here:
If a photo/s is deleted from Google Photos, it would go to Trash/Bin for the next 60 days (after deletion). Unfortunately, if the photos aren't found in Trash or deleted from Trash, I'm afraid, you might not find them else where to recover them because Trash is the last resort to retrieve your lost/deleted photos.

Meanwhile, please uninstall and reinstall the Google Photos app on your iOS device and login with the same Google Account to check if this sorts the issue.

Let me know how it goes.

Best,
Amanda

A question for Google Photo Engineers:

When can we expect a solution to deduplicate photos in google photos?

It is june 2018. Yes it is not an easy job I think. But my archive is unworkable slow.

Thanks,
Jarco

Answer:

Hello Jarco,

Welcome the Google Maps Help Forum.

Google Photos has identical duplicate detection, where if you have uploaded photos to Google Photos already, it will not re-upload the same photo (each photo file has a unique "Hash" that allows us to determine this).

Hence, Google Photos avoids uploading duplicates, when different upload methods or devices are used, as long as the photos aren't edited. There is no easy way to remove duplicates, but some of the following may help:

  1. You can delete duplicates manually, for example in https://photos.google.com/ where they should be next to each other.
  2. The problem is however which one to delete:
    • one photo may be edited, the other not,
    • one photo may be in an album, the other not.
  3. When the upload dates are different (for example when you uploaded long ago via Picasa, and now again using the Desktop uploader). It may be easier to delete the duplicates in https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_ where they are sorted by upload date.
  4. There are more ways to get a useful search result, for example the device from which they are uploaded.
  5. See https://sites.google.com/site/picasaresources/Home/Picasa-FAQ/google-photos-1/how-to/how-to-search-for-photos
  6. Since very recently it is possible to delete photos directly from an album. Go to "More options" (3-dots icon), and use "Move to trash"
  7. When you uploaded in the free "High Quality" and have your photos in albums, it may be wiser to simply ignore the duplicates in the library.
Unfortunately, a feature to sort and delete duplicates of photos with Google Photos that are already backed up doesn't exist. You may have to manually select the duplicates and delete them.

Meanwhile, also try uninstalling and reinstalling the Google Photos app on your iOS device to check if it resolves the issue.

Let me know how it goes.

Best,
Amanda

Answer:

I have same issue with double photos but only from a sync folder from Google Drive. I have checked and there is only one file. It's the exactly the same image in Google Photos, size, resolution, BUT i can only add comments on one of them, so there is a difference. I plan to upload all my photos this way but it's not realistic for me to go though 100.000 pictures on by one to check for doubles.

Answer:

Hi Jarco,

Thanks for writing back.

I recommend posting your query in the Google Drive Help Forum for a better assistance.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Best,
Amanda

Answer:

Cannot agree with solution. One upload from just phone, always automatically by google demand. After some time I see doubles. Same dates, same file names. on the gdrive too. Till now I just manually trying to delete them but its not a solution. It needs too much time to manually delete almost each second picture. And also I didn't detect when this problem occur. Not all pictures are doubled. Is it can be indicated by album? Certainly not. I see doubled pictures that they were newer in album.

Answer:

Same here, real pain and seems inconsistent. Some are duplicated some not. IPhone and Google Photos doesn't seem to mix well. I've turned off iCloud sync for photos but this seems to make no difference.

Answer:

I have the same issue. Here is what I did:
1. Use backup and sync for my Mac photos
2. In google photos, set to sync "google drive
3. After one day, I see all photos from Mac photos library duplicated in google photo. If I delete one of the photos, it will be also delete from google drive. Now I have no idea how to get rid of these duplicates...

Answer:

There is no Google here, just other users which may have a comparable problem, but often with different causes.
But Google Photos does prevent duplicates, so you must have (had) a secundary syncing uploader in which the metadata of the originals is changed and then Google Photos accepts them as if it are new pictures.
So you have to take away that secundary path to prevent further look-alikes.

Thereafter you only can decide visually which one of the pairs can be deleted without causing problems elsewhere. No better solution since years. And therefore you need to look at the information panel like shown below:

You have to use the feedback option on https://photos.google.com or in the Photos-app to described the cause of your problem and why you did fall in that pit because of missing warnings.

That's a bit unbelievable unless you have extreme amount of pictures and movies at Google.

Clear data will not help unless you switch-off the app for further use.
Then you still can view and download from https://photos.google.com in the browser on your laptop.

It is bedtime here, so wait for better tips before going to do stupid things.

PS: free -up space only removes the locally stored pictures if they were uploaded already.
