Previously, I was able to go to the Google Photos App, view a SINGLE picture, tap the 'share' icon, and select "Instagram Direct Message" icon, and it would bring up the option of WHICH conversation/thread I wanted to share the image to. Currently, it insists on creating a "share link" or some silly thing like that. I don't want to create a shareable album, I want to simply inject the image into Instagram's Direct Message interface like it did before.

I'm aware of this. If the picture is very old, via the Instagram app you need to scroll very far down and it's finicky.

For now I've figured how to add this photo to a new folder, that way it's at the "top" of this new folder and it's easier to find via the Instagram app.

But why can I not do it directly via the "share" method from Google photos? I can do this with apps like messenger or telegram or Whatsapp.

The following possibilities would arise once you cancel the subscription.

 

Scenario 1. you have brought down the space occupied on Google Drive to less than 15 GB before cancelling the subscription. 

• You continue to have uninterrupted access to Gmail, Google Drive & Google Photos.

Scenario 2. You cancelled the subscription but occupied more than 15 GB of space on Google Drive.

• You stop getting emails.
• You can't upload any new documents & photos to Google Drive & Google Photos.
• However, you can delete the content from Gmail, Google Drive & Google Photos.

Nevertheless, if you do not access your account for two years, Google will purge the entire content & remove your ID.

It sounds as if your school's IT Team are deliberately re-directing you to your school website, probably to ensure that people switch over correctly to the Microsoft email accounts. They may not have realised that a number of you were using Google Photos, or you may have missed any communication from them regarding Google Photos accessibility going forward. 

It's possible you won't be able to use Google Photos via the .edu account going forward, but there are usually ways to migrate away from .edu accounts, so it would make a lot of sense for you to contact your IT Team and ask them for help. Don't wait too long to contact them because your .edu Google account may be inaccessible but not deleted. Try asking your IT Team how you can recover your photos, and transfer them to a personal Google Photos account.
