After wasting a couple of hours searching, I found there is an Album archive https://get.google.com/albumarchive for albums created on Picasa, etc. whatever that is. Viola! There were the lost albums! My two questions are, why are they findable only in the new google sites, and why don't they show up in the google photos archive?

Thanks for posting on the Google Photos Help Community.

It looks like you'd like to restore photos on your account. If so, please know that photos/videos deleted from the Google Photos library, goes to the Trash for the next 60 days. So, in case, you deleted it by mistake you can always restore it from Trash folder within those 60 days (post deletion). However, restoring your lost/deleted photos and videos from Trash is the last resort.I recommend checking the Trash folder of Google Photos.

Please follow the below steps to restore lost/deleted photos:

1. Go back to the Google Photos app.
2. At the top left, tap Menu, then Trash.
3. Touch and hold the photo or video you want to recover.
4. At the top right, tap Restore.

This action will put the photo or video back:

1. Onto your phone.
2. Into the "Photos" section of the app.
3. Into any albums it was in.

I also recommend you looking for your photos here:

• photos.google.com.
• photos.google.com/trash.
• picasaweb.google.com.
• drive.google.com (under Google Photos).

If a photo/s is deleted from Google Photos, it would go to Trash/Bin for the next 60 days. If the photos aren't found in Trash, I'm afraid, you might not find  else because Trash is the last resort to retrieve your lost/deleted photos.

I have no problem to do that on my very old Samsung Chromebook. 

It also is wise to crop your photo to a horizontal 16:9 size to fit the screen. When I open a picture, I have a simple editor available for doing that perfectly.

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your post.

 

You have queried this in the Google Photos forum.

However, the Google Photos app doesn't recognise any flash drive connected through the USB port on the phone. 

 

Still, there are multiple ways to do so.

If your phone can recognise a flash drive, you can use some file explorer app to move the content from your phone memory to the USB stick.

 

Alternatively, you can connect your phone to a desktop PC & the USB drive to another port on the same PC. Then you can cut and paste the files using Windows Explorer without even downloading those to the PC.

You are free to remove the Google Photos app. That action will not remove any pictures that are stored on your phone or at Google, but it will not free-up much space either.

Good to hear Denisse, but you started your question that you wanted to free up space and that is the problematic part.

It always is good to remove some useless apps, but most space on phone is used by pictures + movies. So it would be a wise action for everyone to remove the oldest month at the start of a new month - not in Google Photos, but in Apple Photos. 

So my guess was that you had say 2 GB of free space left and if your Google Photos app took 2 GB, removing the app means that you have now 4 GB of free space for adding more picture & movies instead of reducing that amount.

But new shoots will not get backupped at Google anymore now, thus they may get lost in future. 

That were my sorrows....

 

PS: the general misunderstanding is that the app stores copies of your pictures & movies, but it only stores links to their copies stored in cloud at Google.

Thank you! since I transferred all my photos to this app I was worried that If I changed my phone to a new one, by deleting the app I would delete my photos as well.

I found it only appears when I open a photo from the timeline (Photo stream) view. On the mobile app: 

1. Open Google Photos app.
2. Select Photos section.
3. Open a photo. In the upper right-hand corner of the screen you should see an empty star immediately to the left of the 3-dots menu. 

I raised the issue of it not working from the albums view. It's not clear whether this issue will be treated as a bug, or a feature request.

I can't start using  favorites though, the star does NOT show up for me on my mobile app. It shows up for me on my PC only, and I have added pics to favorites from my PC, but on mobile, neither the star, or the folder will show up, and I'm fully updated using an OG Pixel XL......I also tried clearing my cache, but maybe I should clear data also?

You're using favourites on your PC, so you should be able to see the favourites folder on your mobile device. 

Some things you could check:

• If you by any chance have multiple Google accounts, it might be worth checking you're using the same account on both the mobile device and the PC. 
• Do you allow Google Photos to use your mobile data plan? If not, make sure your mobile device has adequate internet access via Wi-Fi.
• Clear the Google Photos app cache on your mobile device.
