Hi, mubshar Umar

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

Are you looking for restoration of the entire data on your phone or only the photos & videos?
Have you checked whether the content is still there in the trash of your phone or the bin in the Google Photos app?

Question: मेरे जितने फोटो हैं सब वापस हो जाऊंगा

मेरे जितने फोटो हैं सब वापस हूं मैं

Hi, Yogash Kumar Yogash Kumar

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.
Any deleted picture is retained in the bin for sixty days.
If your delete action is recent, you will find all the items in the bin. The bin icon becomes visible in the library view. Tap that & recover everything available in the bin.

However, if your delete action has already crossed sixty days, or you have emptied the bin inadvertently, there is no way to recover anything through Google Photos.

However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app (be sure to not pick one that requires rooting) https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps;
and run a scan for anything to recover.

Hi, aman raval

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

Nevertheless, when you tap the delete icon in the Google Photos app, a warning appears telling you what will happen if you proceed. On your phone, that message asks, "Remove from Google account & synced devices?"

When you attempt to manually empty the trash/bin in Google Photos, another warning appears that explains the consequences of permanently deleting those pictures and videos.
If you choose to proceed anyway, there is nothing that any of the volunteers in this forum can do to help you recover your pictures.

Get rid of duplicates

Hi, Dewayne Davis

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

By default, Google Photos never uploads the same picture multiple times.
What we see as duplicates have some difference in file format or metadata.

Regrettably, Google Photos doesn't provide any means to remove the apparent duplicates. You have to search those manually.

However, you will find some tips in this article on how to avoid duplicates in the first place & how to remove the ones which are already there.

My android (Moto Z Force) is getting full. In Photos I tried "Free Up Space" and got: "Can't free up space.
Use free up space when items are backed up and can be removed from your device." I have not other option. My photos are being backed up. Turning on and off Backup and and sync doesn't do anything.
Also, if I select photos and move them to the trash (and then empty the trash) it isn't clear if they will be
deleted also from the cloud (I think they are).

Hi, Deva New Collections & MDS Own Code

Did you make some changes in the settings of WhatsApp?

However, regretfully, your query is not related to some feature in the Google Photos app.

Nevertheless, WhatsApp hides the media folder from visibility to other apps, usually.
But, you will find directions on how to unhide that on WhatsApp FAQ pages.

Answer:

Addition
An empty folder is not shown, but as soon as you receive a fresh chat with a picture, the folder will become visible again. Just guessing of course because of no problems here.

PS: be aware that Whatsapp murders pictures by taking away all relevant data and that may cause great troubles somewhere in future.

Question: How to shrink a 194 Mg video file?

How to shrink a large video file 193 Meg to send over the web.

Hi, Peter Morse

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

You can achieve some some size reduction through Google Photos through these means.
  • Save the video in high quality. Then that will produce some compression
  • Trim the leading & trailing ends of the video by removing some frames through the video editor in Google Photos.
However, that may not produce the desired size reduction.
Then you will have to look for some proprietary apps to do so.

Answer:

Addition
Use Wetransfer to send that video - no preparations needed.
But the receiver must understand how to unzip.
So you may need to mail some instructions also.

Hello,

I'm having issues with deleting original videos from my iPhone's photos app. As long as the original videos are still in my photos app, the quality of the videos in google photos looks fine. But as soon as I delete the original video, then the video quality on google photos goes down despite being uploaded at original quality. It's been months since those videos have been uploaded, so they should've processed by now.

I've been trying to figure this out for almost a year. I had posted a question and got no answer, and now I just noticed that it was locked. I want to clear space on my phone so hopefully  this time someone from Google answers and let's me know how I can fix this or if this is a bug they are working on.

Thank you

I have had google photos since 2014. I was trying to empty my iPhone photo album to create more space on my iCloud. When I went to open google photos a few days ago, it asked to make sure I was logged into my google account, and then it went to sync all of the photos on my iPhone. When I looked at the history, all of my photos that were previously on google photos, from 2014-2018, were deleted. The only photos on the google account and the current photos on my iPhone. Is there any way to get those other photos back? The only place they were saved was on Google Photos.

I believe you are saying something about the photos & videos backed up through Google Photos.

The content uploaded by you is going to be available even after 1st June 2021 & also will continue to occupy the same amount of space even after that, as on today.
However, if you edit anything existing, that will start occupying space
Any new uploads will occupy space irrespective of the quality.
And, once your reach the 15 GB limit, then you will lose access to your collection unless you delete something.

Answer:

Hi JoisyDiane,

Welcome to the Google Photos Product Help Forum!

It sounds like you have everything set up, but are not comfortable with how Google Photos interacts with native (and other) iOS apps.

Basically, iOS will always view the Apple Photos app as the ~Central/Core/Default~ one.  This is not really an issue once you get familiar with it (more than 99.5% of the photos I have taken in the last year were from my iPhone 8 Plus and I access them from my phone, iPad and computer).

Unless you are very constrained on space, don't be in a rush to delete (e.g., "Free up space") on your iPhone, assuming that is where most of your photos are coming from. You can then use iOS Messages directly.

If you need to send an iOS message for an image not in iOS Photos but in Google Photos, go to the 3 dot menu for the desired image and "Download" it - it will then be in iOS Photos.  If based on your workflow this is a frequent need, you might consider using the Google Hangouts app on a computer  which will access Google Photos images directly.

Be careful if using iCloud Photo Library (not iCloud Settings backup) and Google Photos simultaneously, if you are inclined to to this check back and I will point out a related thread.

Don't use the Garbage Can for any image that you may ever want.  Only use "Free up space" or ~Delete device originals~.  Do all of your maintenance in the Google Photos app - it is safer.

Feel free to ask any follow-up questions or for clarification, if needed.

The Google Hangouts app is for a computer? Sadly, I only own an iPhone (newest XS MAX) and a 3 1/2 year 4th gen iPad. Well, not THAT sad, I love my new phone. I USED to like to bring photos onto my iPad because screen is bigger to edit them, but my iPad can no longer edit photos from new phone. I think I potentially did a stupid thing and deleted all the photos BUT, of course, they're still in (thank god) Google Photos. 6,000 photos! See my problem? I'm gonna have to search and download as needed from Google Photos. Is there a "download a copy" feature? I don't want to start losing photos. I'm sorry, I'm an old lady now, Heh-heh-heh-heh...  25 years ago I was at the top of my game as a graphic designer,  now I'm home, just trying to keep my head above water with all the new tech stuff.
Am I making sense? Is there anything else I can read that might help me learn that you can recommend? Thanks so much for your prompt reply!!! I was so happy!!

Answer:

Hi JoisyDiane,

>>> The Google Hangouts app is for a computer? Sadly, I only own an iPhone (newest XS MAX) and a 3 1/2 year 4th gen iPad. Well, not THAT sad, I love my new phone

Actually, the Hangouts App for a computer is pretty difficult to scroll to really old images.. Probably just as easy to download from the Google Photos App to iOS (and use whatever messaging tool you prefer). Actually, you are lucky not to have a general purpose computer because they have their own problems.

>>> I USED to like to bring photos onto my iPad because screen is bigger to edit them, but my iPad can no longer edit photos from new phone.

Is this because you don't see them in the Google Photos App or a problem editing the format? I just realized that my 5 year old iPad is having trouble synching images for the past month (I have about 77,000 images in my Google Photos).. My wife and I pray almost everyday that the iPad Mini 5 will be realized this March as rumored..  If you don't see the images on your iPad you might try one of the (somewhat painful) workarounds here: https://support.google.com/photos/thread/280318?hl=en

If the issue precluded editing is a file format (HEIF...) than you MIGHT consider setting the format on your phone to ~Most Compatible~ (reference: https://support.google.com/photos/thread/157759?msgid=157772 )

>>> Is there a "download a copy" feature? I don't want to start losing photos.

No, I don't believe so, but once you make a minor edit you ~Save a copy~ via the 3 dot menu.  Also, the Snapseed Photo Editor (also a Google Product) has some interesting features and there are a couple of export options.

>>> Is there anything else I can read that might help me learn that you can recommend?

Thanks for all your help, I'll look into the links you provided. My iPad started giving me a message that it can no longer edit any NEW photos after I I started using one of the last OS updates on my iPhone 7s and now my newest phone, of course. I can see them on my iPad but not edit them. The message I get when I tried was DOES NOT SUPPORT THIS PHOTO FORMMAT or something like that. I have to all editing now on the XS MAX. At least that's one thing I like about it's bigger size (I have tiny hands and navigating that extra large phone can be a challenge!). I'm just going to have to get used to all this. Otherwise GOOGLE PHOTOS is really cool! I love the assistant feature! There's a lot to learn. Thank you again! Oh! You and your wife have 77,000 photos? Hee hee! I thought My messily 6000 was a lot!!

Sincerely and appreciably,

Question: Where is the tool for retouching photos and straightening photos in Google photos?

There is no tool in Google Photos for either retouching or straightening (though there are tools for basic color adjustments, rotating and cropping). The photo editor in Google Photos is, by design, rudimentary.

External editors (such as Pixlr, e.g) are sophisticated and will work with images in Google Drive, so you may want to explore that. Don't, however, edit images in the Google Photos folder of Google Drive and expect the edits to sync with Google Photo; they won't.

Let me know if this helps (and if it does please select the Recommend button below this post so that others can more easily find the solution to similar problems).

Answer:

Yes. As I expected, I am once again disappointed with Google. Can't believe they discontinued the great Picasa for such a poor program.  Trying to be Apple photos but not even coming close.

Answer:

Everyone goes on with making the same mistake, because Google Photos did not replace Picasa, but Picasaweb only. And Picasaweb (closed in 2016) never have had a good editor either.

That "rudimentary editor" on GP still can straighten and crop quite nicely, so you have overseen that option in the right-up corner. No red-eyes and small blemishes indeed and no texting also.
But for more advanced editing you may use Google Snapseed or many other apps if your pictures never reach your desktop anymore :-)

Not clear why you don't use Picasa anymore, but last year it also was disconnected from all webservices - so it did become less comfortable to upload to Google Photos.

@Susan: Others have similar sentiments. If you are interested, you can send a feature request to Google by opening Google Photos, going to the Menu (three short-horizontal lines in upper left), choosing Help & Feedback, then Feedback.

Also, in the meantime, I would be grateful if you pressed the Recommend button under my earlier response so that other users with similar questions can more easily find it.  Thanks so much.

Answer:

Apparently Susan is a Mac-user and that is a bad situation: the very last Picasa-version from December 2015 (3.9.141.305?) hardly can be found on the web and seems not functioning in the Mohave-version of Mac-OS either. I can't check that, because I am no Mac-user.

So if she has transferred to a new Mac lately, it did become quite hopeless and that is strange, because on Windows she would have no installing-problems at all and I still can use Picasa everyday for many years ahead probably. And I have the small install-file on a thumb drive for some new computer.

But even that fine Windows-version (3.9.141.259) can't sync its folders with Google Photos anymore and that makes Picasa much less comfortable for most old users (but not for me).

So in general it is correct to conclude: Picasa is over hélas and there is no comparable freeware available because for many Adobe software is a step too big - even apart from the costs. And these advanced editors do not sync to Google Photos either because they have their own cloud.

However on mobile the situation is much better, because apart from the limited editor in Google Photos, free apps like Adobe Photoshop Express and Google Snapseed offer a lot of fine editing tools which can work together with Google Photos quite comfortable.

So even if Susan still has new pictures from her normal camera,  she can do the import and primary selection via Apple Photos on her Mac and then export to Google Photos straight into a new album.
And thereafter she can do a lot of fine editing on her iPad, because that will be far more comfortable and precise then on her small iPhone :-)

That seems more realistic to me then waiting on any improvements in the GP-editor next Christmas :-)

There are probably half a dozen programs that are up-to-date and can do what Picasa did. I liked Picasa, also, but it is not irreplaceable.

Answer:

if google photos can't retouch....what is the best program (free) to go to??  I hate that Picasa left us...it was a great app..I used it to fix cracks in photo's, take someone out of the picture, now they take the it away from us...

Answer:

The least thing what you could have done before typing complaints, is reading what was written before at https://support.google.com/photos/thread/1100717?msgid=1159093
No Google here, so don't expect any improvements from them.

Answer:

"I used Picasa to fix cracks in photo's, take someone out of the picture"
Picasa was (and still is) a basic editor with a very basic "retouch" tool. I hardly used it except for removing spots. On the computer you can use the free Faststone or the much more sophisticated GIMP and probably many others.

Answer:

Where is the blemish tool? What is the point of a photo which will not allow you to remove small blemishes like a spot on your chin. Soo disappointed in Google

Hello. I have just 'upgraded' to Back up and Sync. All my photos have been backed up but the software keeps trying to sync photos that have already been backed up in photos. It does it every time I reboot for around 20k of my photos. All of which then fail (the sync) as they have already been backed up. Its been doing this for a week. How do you make it stop?

Answer:

I have the same problem.

It was working perfectly before with the old Photos sync and then made the switch as it was being deprecated. I'm on a Mac, runing the latest MacOS, the photos are on a folder on an external harddrive (which is never removed), all beuatifully arranged by folder data etc. As soon as i do a restart (which usually happens in the am) it kicks all off again... Its insane..

It's really an issue you have to take up wiith Google at the Backup and Sync Support page using the Contact us option to chat or email details of the issue.  We can sometimes help once the initial problem is resolved but our experience is limited, Regards, Peter

Hi, I have been encountering this issue where I am unable to use free up space function. Nothing happens no matter how many times I've clicked the button, or occasionally it'll crash and I've to restart the app. I've tried clearing cache, reinstalling, clearing data. Nothing works. My phone is a Samsung galaxy note 10+.

Answer:

Hi, MALIK AHMAD

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

However, can you please provide the following information?
How much is the free space on your phone now?
Further, how much space will get freed once you use the "Free up space" option?
That will help in suggesting a suitable answer.

Answer:

Hi,  MALIK AHMAD

Thanks for your reply

The free up space option is to be used at regular intervals.

I have noted through many thread that accumulating a large number creates problems.

Nevertheless, you can follow these steps to start freeing up space on your device.
  • First, ensure all the photos are backed up.
  • To verify that, [lease visit the link https://photos.google.com through any browser on your phone & check that everything is visible there.
  • Once assured, open the Photos app again.
  • Long press the first picture till a tick appears.
  • Then, while still in pressed condition, stroke down to select multiple pictures.
  • Once a sizable number of pics are selected, tap the three dots at the top right corner & tap the option "Delete from device".
  • You may have to repeat this action till the "Free up space" option remains unresponsive.
Nevertheless, after uploading a sizable amount, the option will work removing the rest of the pics automatically.

Thanks for your reply

Can you please try removing a single picture through that option & see whether the app takes some action?

Otherwise, please clear the cached & stored data, update the app & try once again.

Hi Ovidiu Mocsi!

Check your photos at https://photos.google.com.
If you see that everything is working well on the site, then it's all about the application.
Here's how else you can do:
• open Device Settings or the Google Play Store and delete the Photos app,
• Then in the Device Settings, select the Apps - Google Play Services - delete data section.
• Then go to Storage - delete cash.
• After that, restart the device, and turn it off for 10-15 minutes.
• Then turn it on, and download the Photos app again.
View result.

I have videos that used to play, but now say "Your video will be ready soon".  They have said this for 6 months or so.  I have gone through all of the steps.  I cannot find the files in my Drive.  I cannot download the files.  The files do not show up when doing a Google Takeout.  I sometimes see the initial frame, but then it goes to this screen.  As you can see, it is a sizable file.  I would just love to be able to download the file to correct whatever happened.  Please help.
