We can't test ourselves such bulks, but my guessing is that the number is beyond some limit at Google or on iPad or that it are specific filetypes that are refused by iPad.

You can view the fileproperties in the Google Photos app if you move a single picture upwards.

Then I want to add or delete a folder so I try to click the icon to get to the three dots so I can choose preferences. But nothing happens. No three dots, no other options, nothing. I've tried right and left clicking the icon in the tray (which shows that it's running), as well as running it from my programs list as the admin, but no menu/options appear. The only way I've solved this is to uninstall backup and sync, reinstall, and set it up all over again. There has to be a better way. Any suggestions?

You are right, but there is no Google-personel here - just (experienced) other users here (volonteers).

So you should complain via the feedback option in the menu of the app.

Sorry that I can not be more helpfull.

In contrary: my opinion is that nobody should use this app at all: if you upload via your browser, you can assign selections to albums immediately . See uploading for several alternate methods.

Besides: it is normal to organise and edit before uploading and automatics is preventing that.

I could go into great detail about how Google Drive File Stream is a VERY poor replacement for Windows File Servers. It's woefully inadequate where it comes to setting up file and folder permissions. It's all or none. But since this is about Photos, I will stick to that. We uploaded close to 70K images from a Marathon. These are photos of participants. Google Photos limits you to 500 images per album. Right off the bat this is an administrative nightmare, so we are sticking with Flickr. This is really disappointing. I had hoped Google Photos would be great for a business, but it is completely geared toward non-business users. Creating albums is not simple. You can NOT first create an album and upload images to it. Even after you upload images, you cannot select all, you have to select by group. Super annoying. I stick with google because of the promise for better things, but the meantime is a pain in the ass.

I deleted a lot of photos from my school account. I never gave my school account permission to sync or backup and don't know how they even got on there in the first place. When I deleted them they deleted from my personal account as well. I went into the trash on my personal account and restored all the photos. I've done this at least 6 times now and every time the photos end up in the trash again. Once I restore them all it says that there is no photos in the trash and then after about 45 seconds they all reappear. I'm not deleting them again on other accounts or anything, I literally just leave the trash open and they're back in less than a minute.

There is not any logic in your story.

It was your own choice to install the Google Photos app on your iPhone (and iPad?) and it was your own choice to set the backup to some account. But deleting in the app will delete your local originals as well their copies at Google in that account, but you need to give permission for emptying the trash. And if you refuse that, they will return in trash.

So I would suggest the following:

Check the backupsetting in the app if your personal account is selected and then switch-off.
Open photos.google.com in Safari and log-in with your school-account. Everything you may see there, was private in that account, unless you did share a lot with friends.
Now you can start selecting groups and deleting them, but don't empty the trash in case you are missing a lot later (that trash will be emptied automatically after 60 days).
Close the site and return to the app and switch-on the backup for your personal account. Maybe a lot will get backupped now to your personal account, so leave the app open and see what happens.
Much later open photos.google.com in Safari again, but now log-in with your personal account in order to check if everything has arrived at Google correctly.

I’m sorry, it’s not possible to recover photos permanently deleted from the Google Photos Trash. The G Photos show everything that is inside the Gallery of your device. Therefore, we can say that if you have not selected any folders for Autobackup, then there are no files inside your Photos.

You can also just do this:

When I try to add photos/videos to an album it just shows that it's loading but it stays there forever (even if it's just a couple of items) and never actually adds to the album.

Same with deleting from device. It just shows that little indicator at the bottom that says 'Deleting' but there's no actual progress and nothing gets deleted.

Even the search function doesn't work, whether I type into the search bar or select someone in the People tab. It just doesn't do anything.

This has been annoying me for almost a month now because I've been trying to clear out my phone but I can't do it without the delete from device function. I'm wondering if anyone is experiencing the same issues

i only can guess that you are not logged-in upright or logged-in to another account then used in the backupsettings.

And for a number of functions backup must be on also.

PS: for filling existing albums you better can open that album and use the + to add pictures. Albums do exist at Google only, so you need to be connected to the right account.

Thanks for fast reply.

Device albums don't exist - it are device folders. And if these folders are not synced, their content is not visible in the mainstream and that is why you can't add them to your opened album.

But that is a different problem, because adding to album implies then that they get uploaded to Google first and then get assigned to the album chosen. So I am still in doubt in doubt about your backup settings, but I first will try a bit on my own Samsung.

My bad, I mean't device folders not albums 😅 I've already selected the device folders to be synced, but since adding from the album shows the most recent photos that have been backed up it's harder for me to find older photos from certain device folders that I want to add to my albums.

I've checked to make sure the only Google account that my photos are being backed up to is my main one. It seems that the problem I have is with the app itself being buggy and not solely with the backup and sync settings, because as I mentioned in the original post even the search settings don't seem to be working properly. At first I thought it was a problem with my internet connection, but even with stable wifi these problems seem to persist.

Just tested and no problem (as expected). Backup does not need to be on either.

But it goes slow indeed - even for one small 1 MB file - just because Google has to do a lot: uploading to your account space in the first place and then assigning that picture to the album you have selected.

Did you ever have checked if your backup at Google is correct?

Just open photos.google.com in the Chrome-browser and log-in with your backup-account (can be done on laptop also in another browser).

Then it becomes difficult to guess what is wrong at your side. Device too old: slow and too less free space, interfering app which prevent smooth operation like battery saving automatics or too much apps open all day. Never restart freshly everyday, no garbage cleaner-app available etc. etc.

About adding older pictures to albums: if they are in dedicated device folders only, I would suggest to open photos.google.com via the Chromebrowser and then open the album via the 3 short lines and choose the + and the arrow-up and then try to find that device folder - that is made difficult. And then you can select the files needed for that album.
