I have a Google Photos folder in my GDrive which is synced to the cloud using Backup and Sync. When the number of photos became large, I created subfolders within Google Photos on my laptop and moved some photos to those folders.

But when I sign in to Google Drive, I see only the photos in the root folder "Google Photos\

You are not correct: the Google Photos folder does not have anything to do with the Backup & Sync app on your computer - unless you mean on your phone. 

It just is an optional folder filled by Google, normally in year and month subfolders. You may move (not copy) pictures to folders created by yourself, and these will stay synced. But that action does not create albums on Photos. And if you create an album on Photos, that will not be shown in some folder on Drive. 

If you are using Backup & Sync for your desktop folder, these pictures will not arrive in the Google Photos folder anymore, but under a new tab in Drive, named Computer. There you will see back your synced desktop-folders and their contents is synced to the Google Photos library only - not to any album.

I do understand the inconvenience as you're unable to delete photos from your Google Photos app. Therefore, I recommend trying the steps below in sequence, this may help in fixing the issue:

• Make sure your device is up-to-date.
  
• Make sure the App is up-to-date.
  
• Try restarting the App through the following steps:
  
• Go to your App Settings.
• Click stop on the afflicted App with the Force Stop button.
• Wait a few seconds to make sure the App has stopped processing, and then attempt to re-start it.

• Display the Active Apps on your device.

Is there any way to make sure the GP app always asks permission to delete from other devices, like Windows Explorer does?  No, I don't want to overwrite or delete the file without review.

Why wouldn't I just plug my phone into the laptop in the first place, in that case.  What does GP add?

Also, the reasons I got the app was 1. to be able to remove photos from the phone, and 2. be able to access certain of the photos from any device, and other photos not, and 3. to be able to automatically have access to photos I took on the phone from within Wordpress or other website via browser.

Personal and business photos are mixed on the phone.  I need to create albums or folders that synch to the laptop using different rules.

Maybe I got bad advice to use Google Photos.  It wouldn't be the first time.

Somebody please draw me a diagram of how the data travels, and what the options are.  The step-by-step is useless without a map.

For new photos taken on mobile I have the OneDrive app installed with settings to upload new photos to the OneDrive cloud where they go into the camera roll. I have the camera roll synced to my laptop where I manually move them to add to my photo archive.

 

Moving them deletes from OneDrive where they are stored in the recycle folder for 30 days.

Deleting from OneDrive does not delete from the mobile device.

The photos are backed up to Google Photos as normal and I am using OneDrive because it is part of Windows, but Dropbox also works,

Thank you!  I wish I had consulted you two weeks ago before I tried to use Google!  I already have OneDrive and a photo app installed.  I have my photos backed up in the app, now.  My whole goal was to simplify, not complicate and triplicate or quadruplicate the number of photos, which are already scattered all over the place, by adding more places.

But if I'm reading you correctly, the answer is "No, I can't access either Google photos or OneDrive photos from WordPress, Vistaprint, or other browser window."  I have to put the photos on the local device.

The clarification on Backup and Sync being separate was helpful.  It was totally confusing to me that sometimes I can't tell if people know the difference between them, and to combine them didn't make any sense!

Bottom line:  Google Photos won't save me any space.  The photos have to go onto the devices in order to be used, I guess.

The whole thing reminds me of a bad database:  GIGO.  Manually making changes to data is not a step forward, and maintaining an imperfect database is a waste of time.

I'm still frustrated that if I lose my laptop or phone, I might not lose my photos, but I'll lose all my sorting and folders.

Apart from some incidental burst shoots, you hardly can have duplicates on your phone unless due to very uncommon operations like copying to other folders. But you can see the same pictures in several apps. Like in the Google Photos app which simply shows the pictures on your phone. 

The point is: do you have duplicates (not look-alikes) at photos.google.com also. If so, it becomes difficult, because a backup needs to be clean. 

Please come back with more precise information and some screenshot. 

PS: look-alike pictures are different files and that are no duplicates because you should have kept the best one only.

Although there are multiple ways to transfer the content from the internal memory of the phone to an SD card, doing so through Google Photos allows retaining the backup and sync aspect.

Please follow the steps below to achieve the transfer.

• Open Google Photos.
• Tab Library.
• Tap the desired folder under Photos on the device like Camera, Screenshots etc.
• Select photos by long pressing then tap others after the tick confirms the first selection
• You can also long-press and stroke down while still in a pressed condition, to select a batch.
• Next, tap the 3 dot menu top right.
• Tap Move to folder.
• Tap New SD folder, type a folder name then tap Create.

Note that if the photos are backed up to Google Photos this will not remove them from the Photos, and even if the new folder is not selected for Backup & sync any contents will still be deleted if you delete that using the Google Photos app.

If you transfer the pictures from your old device to a new one, then the app may perceive that as a new collection & start backing up everything.
If you wish to have the pics on the new phone, either please download that one by one or do so through Google Takeout.

Normal camera-pictures will not give problems, but it always are the WA's which give problems because they have no fixed data and probably will get new dates due to the transfer and then will get uploaded again to Google Photos. 

In fact there is no good reason to use the Samsung transfer, because after you log-in to the Google Photos app, all old pictures will be shown and you seldom will need to download one. Besides WA is now able to reach your collection at Google Photos. 

So best to keep your new phone clean and to start with fresh shoots to fill its local memory.

You can add a person through the following steps.

 

Tap to open the photo which contains unidentified faces & then slide up or tap the three dots.
If the app had failed to include some faces in that picture, then you will see a prompt "XX faces available to add".
Here is a screenshot of one such suggestion

 

Tap the edit icon at the extreme right edge. (An icon of a pencil circled in the screenshot above).

 

That will show identified faces in square boxes & their thumbnails at the bottom.
Tap on the + sign on each thumbnail. 
Then the app will show you all the identified faces till that time.
You can select the right one.

 

However If you want to create a new group, then tap the + sign at the top right corner of the screen.
That would create a new grouping altogether.

 

Once created, the app may take some time to bring all the related pictures to this new grouping.
Otherwise, you can go through the collection & add the photos to the newly created group, manually, through the same steps as described above.

Google photos used to have all my WhatsApp Messenger pictures, videos, and animations saved in separate folders automatically. I've searched WhatsApp to double check my settings and I have it set to backup those files on WiFi but the folders are entirely missing in Google Photos as of about a week ago and I don't know how to get those back. I've deleted the cache in Photos and restarted my phone. Photos and WhatsApp have both updated since then so I don't think that's the issue.

Nevertheless, WhatsApp tries to hide the media folder from visibility to other apps, usually.
