Thanks PeteranDi for the link. I had already checked this when installing the new backup and sync tool. I read numerous posts about similar syncing issues.
I have just noticed something : when copying a JPEG file in my local "google photos" folder it does not appear on google photo, but if I copy a JPEG in a different folder in my google drive (outside "google photos" folder), it is visible in google photo !
Looks like the sync issue is related to the "gogole photos" folder. Is this folder syncing only one way now with the new backup and sync tool ?

My personal opinion is that it is a good thing, I actually suggested the the Google Photos folder was made read only to save any confusion. I have seen a few other subtle changes recently, I wonder if Google are re-arranging things to break the link with Picasa Web days.

Although the Google Photos folder of Google Drive should be "Read Only" as Peter suggests, that it isn't has long created confusion among users. Best practice is never to add-to, delete, or edit images in the Google Photos folder of Drive (that is to treat that folder as if Read Only). Because not only aren't images added to Google Photos folder of Drive reflected in Google Photos, edits from Drive aren't reflected in Google Photos either.

What's more, if you use Google Backup to add images from hard drive folders to Google Photos, those images aren't even in the Google Photos folder of Google Drive. For this reason, anyone who takes pictures from a devoted camera such as an SLR and adds them to Google Photos should not use Google Backup if having a sync between Google Photos and the Google Photos folder of Drive is a goal.

Meanwhile, let you know that you will see your files in Google Photos even if it is not backed up to it. It just acts as a gallery app when the backup and sync is "OFF".

Emma, when I download images from google photos, they are typically between 4 and 9 megabytes. That is a pretty huge image file! It would be nice if I could choose to download them at reduced resolution or quality. Often a 1 megabyte image has all the image quality I need.

Emma is not here anymore, but you don't understand how Google Photos works.

See sizes (but I never have seen the Express option).

Picasa & Picasaweb worked on a different way: for free storage at Google, you needed to choose a smaller size for uploading. But the Google Photos app always uploads full size and it depends on your setting if they get compressed by Google to "High quality" for free unlimited storage or not.

From your values I must conclude that you have chosen Original quality, else your downloaded files typically would be between 1 and 5 MB. So you may need to start paying for extended storage space soon: look at your usage now via https://one.google.com/storage

If the value at Photos is not zero, you may need to change your setting to High quality and use the recover storage button to get everything compressed.

Further downsizing should be done by some app installed on your computer if you don't have Picasa anymore which still can do that by its export function.

You will find some resizers in the Windows Store for free.

Once you select any folder in backup & sync everything contained within that will be backed up.
To prevent that, first, you have to disable the backup & sync.
Next, move the unwanted pics to some other folder that is not included in the backup.
Then switch on the backup & sync again.

Alternatively, you can download the desired pics to a desktop & then upload those to Google Photos.
That will allow you to keep the backup & sync off permanently.

If the images are not in your Photos library and have since been deleted, we cannot restore then.

You can see if the images are in your trash (Photos > Library > Trash), and if so, select them and select the restore option to return them to your main Photos area.

You can also review Archive photo section to see if the images are there.

Finally, if images have since been deleted, but were sent via email, you can check your Gmail or other email program and see if you can locate the images attached to an email.

Try sending the images one at a time.

Alternatively, to bypass any file size limits, when selecting the share < option, select 'get link', or create a shared album. This will allow you to send a link to someone while still giving them access to a full size images without getting a file size warning.

Then if they like, and you permit downloads, they can download any images they want to their computer.

The problem with link sharing is that some places block Google photos / drive. I specifically needed to email attachments. Send the photos one at a time will work, obviously. At 9 MB I can send two at a time, but then there is no resize option. Basically, there is a bug in sharing multiple photos with a resize from Photos to Gmail.

This is the only topic i managed to find. I have a free delivery offered until 2nd December. It even states taht before i click on checkout. I live in European Union, in Finland. As soon as i enter my address i am being charged 6€ for the delivery. Why does this happen?

For some reason it choses priority delivery, and i can't change that standard/economy. Priority is the only option available.

Could you please confirm if you're trying to change the name of the label applied to Google Photos? If yes, here are the steps that would help you to do so:

On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app.
Sign in to your Google Account.
Click on Albums.
Select People and Pets.
Select the photo.
Right-click and select Edit name label.
Change it and click on the tick.

I can write a comment on ea photo but now I have a 2 week trip to compile where all but one person has contributed and I don't want my name to show on this last person's media in the album. They are now in another country as well, so I can't commandeer their phone to do it for them either.

Good evening. The only way to have someone else's name show up for their pictures is to have that person upload them using their own Google account.

If your friends have smartphones, you can always have them upload their pictures with the Google Photos app. Or, you can direct them to the Google Photos website to upload from their computers.

Other than this, there's no way to have a different name (i.e., photo credit) appear on the pictures.

That's what I was afraid of. This isn't the first time a gmail user has shyed away from learning how to join and add photos to a shared album.

Maybe one day there will be a way to note that they come from someone else.

Hi, I have used Google Backup and Sync on Mac to upload photos to Google Drive. It was a really difficult exercise because it was trying to upload a multiple of the photos I had for 2 days and finally I just ended it (I hadn't checked metadata based on feedback on this forum but still had a 6x number!).

I want to now sync photos from Google Drive to Google Photos. The problem is that some of them are already there, so I just want to do the balance. Is there an easy way to do so? The forum says that I can upload photos selectively from the Drive to be uploaded but I have thousands and sifting through them will be very cumbersome. Is there a way that it can just be synced - so if it is not there on Google photos, the upload will take place?

I have so many friends who have issues on uploading / syncing. I wish the cloud services will prepare a FAQ on what works and what doesn't. It shouldn't be so complex.

Hi, just going over some questions which have been missed and I hope you managed to find an answer.

If not, then I am sorry to say that there is no easy way.

What you could do is to choose the photos using the My Computer section of Backup and Sync with the option to Upload to Google Photos.

Only photos not already uploaded will be added and you can disconnect the chosen folder tree then delete the Google Drive entries without affecting the online copies.
