Sorry to note your are not finding your pictures.
However. photos do not get deleted spontaneously without any user-initiated action.
Further, when we delete something from the phone, the sync action in the app removes it from the cloud also. The same action happens when we delete something in Google Photos, the app removes the matching content from the phone too.
 
Nevertheless, any deleted picture is retained in the bin for sixty days.
 
If your delete action is recent, you will find all the items in the bin. The bin icon becomes visible in the library view. Tap that & recover everything available in the bin.
 
However, if your delete action has already crossed sixty days, or you have emptied the bin inadvertently, there is no way to recover anything through Google Photos.
 
However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app (be sure to not pick one that requires rooting) https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps;
and run a scan for anything to recover.

To bring back the pics to your phone's gallery, either, you can download photos one by one. Regrettably, there is no option to do so on a batch of photos.
 
Alternatively, you can install the Google One app there is a one time option to restore up to two hundred most recent photos to the device.
However, the local folder structure can not be restored.
To do so, there is no requirement to join Google One, the option is available to everyone.
However, the method may not be effective to recover something when the count is more than two hundred.
 
Or, you can arrange for a bulk download by visiting the link https://takeout.google.com/;
Select the Google Photos app for data download.
Once the file is ready, you will get an email. Access that & unzip all the attachments into your phone's gallery.
 
That will bring everything to your phone.

You can't move pictures from A to B because albums in Google Photos are no physical device folders but just containers of links to the mainstream on the Photos-page.  
So if you select picture 1 in album A, you can hit the + and then select album B. But thereafter you need to remove picture 1 from album A (not in trash, because then picture 1 is lost forever everywhere). 
That's the way it should be done.

Free up space only works on internal memory, if your photos are saved to a portable SD card you will need to tap the 3 bar menu; Device folders; SD Camera folder and select then choose the 3 dot option to Delete from device,

My android phone only has internal memory.  It has no SD card.  I have had my photos backed up to google photos on my PC many times before and been able to then free up space.  After several years, suddenly, it no longer works.  I have a message saying the photos are backed up but when I try to free up space, I get a message saying I can't free up space because the photos have not been backed up.

It sounds like the Android is out of sync with the online state, clearing the Photos app data in Android settings;Apps will initiate a re-scan to compare what you have in Device folders and Backed up online.  This should 'reset' things and either backup any photos missing online or register any backed up photos to be available for Free up space.
 
Please give that a try and let me know how it goes.

That is the normal behavior of the mobile apps (Android and iOS)..  Really the "Sync" of Backup & Sync on mobile devices is a bit of a misnomer.    For instance, I have an iPhone and an iPad using the same Google account,  while I can "see" thumbnails for photos for photos taken on the other device, the images from the iPhone are not "dumped" onto the iPad.

I have approximately 80,000 images in my Google Photos, my iPad shows 1.0 GB of space for Google Photos, and my iPhone shows 498.6 MB of space. I am using the free High Quality setting, and most of the images are in Google's Cloud.

Two things worth mentioning:
  • Never rely on a single tool / source for storing important irreplaceable images.
  • Don't use iCloud Photo Library and Google Photos simultaneous on the same device.

Thanks for the explanation. When I think 'sync' I was thinking syncing with a blank, new phone would cause my photos on Google Photos to be wiped out . But those pictures on google photos are, in fact, files stored on there.

I've checked that my phone is up to date. I've attempted to just deal with it and manually delete photos, but that is taking forever! I need this app to work the way it is supposed to.

That probably means that the app has no workspace anymore and apparently you are deleting files in the wrong way yourself also.  And re-installing is not really possible either. 

But before going on you need to check if all is stored at Google safely by viewing photos.google.com in the Chrome-browser when you log-in with the Google-account used in the backupsettings of the app - especially if you have more then one account. 
That's probably the only backup you have, so don't look for 3 seconds. 

If that looks okay, empty the trash in the Google app and install the tiny Google Files app from the Playstore for free and after closing all other apps, select Clean-up to remove a lot of background garbage from years at first. 

Thereafter choose Browse and then Videos if this folder contains several GB's and then choose Select all under the 3 dots and then tip the Trashbin and agree that all should be removed permanently. Hopefully that action gives no problems. 

Then close the app and start the Google Photos app when having good wifi for some hours and be sure that the app is logged-in with the same account as used online. Then give it time to replace the removed videos by their copies on the web (but these are not downloaded back to your phone). 

And tomorrow try its Free-up space option again and my guess is that it then will work perfectly and will remove most remaining picturefiles from your phone - so don't be astonished that your ordinary Gallery will be empty as long as you don't shoot new pictures.

PS: I assume that you don't use a micro-sd card in your phone for storing your camera-images.

Yes, you can do this. There is a feature called Free Up Space, which will remove from your device only those pictures and videos that have been completely and successfully backed up to your Google account. You can learn all about this option and how to use it by visiting the official Google Photos Help page. 
 
If you want to only remove specific images from your phone, and not all of them, you can do this as well. When viewing a single image, swipe up to look at the details below the picture. You'll see icons, one of which says "Delete From Device." Choosing this will remove the picture from your phone, but it will remain in your account. You will be able to see the picture on the Google Photos website, and it will still be visible on your phone in the Photos app. 
 
You can also perform this on multiple pictures by selecting them from the main timeline view, tapping the 3-dot icon in the upper right corner of the screen, then choosing "Delete From Device" from there. 
 
You will see a confirmation notification when you perform these actions. Please make sure to read it. If the pictures you're choose to delete from your device are already backed up to your account, the message will simply tell you that they are still in your Google account. However, if those pictures have not been backed up yet, the message will tell you that you're about to permanently remove pictures that aren't backed up, and there's no way Google can recover them.

But my version 5.40 in Android 11 on my simple Samsung has no problems with 9: 
 
 
All pictures used are not on my phone anymore, but at Google only. 
And that can make a difference which is hard to test for me because my pictures are uploaded from pc. 
 
The resulting collage has a fairly low resolution of 1024x1024px, but if I do the same on the site (photos.google.com) I get a better one with 2048x2048px.

Smaller then the usual smartphone pictures: 2048px wide or high (I don't need poster-prints anymore :-)
So perhaps my situation is too different from the mainstream. 
 
PS: apart from working or not-working, the pictures in the collage are heavenly cropped to squares while most of my originals have a 16:9 ratio. So this would have been a correct collage (not to difficult :-)
 
PS: later tests did show no problems with 9 full blow pictures (50+ MB) locally or synced either. So it must be an hardware problem in some device types. Workaround: do it on photos.google.com

Your action of deleting photos to create space may be ineffective.

Google photos should occupy zero space for the activities up to 31st May 2021 if you have chosen to save the pics in High-Quality format.
 
To check what is occupying the space, you need to visit this link.https://one.google.com/storage/management
There, you will also find some tips on how to retrieve some of the storage space.
Follow those, but while doing so please ensure that you are not losing some critical data.
 
However, this link will show only the quantum of Original Quality photos & offer an option to delete those.
If you wish to convert these to quality, please visit https://photos.google.com/settings
That page will offer two options a) Purchase additional storage or b) Recover storage. 
The second option will offer to convert all original quality content to high-quality
Tap/click on that & then all the pictures in original quality will be converted to high-quality.

Thanks for the reply and I will try this out to free up more space!  

The only thing I'm still a little confused about is if google photos are occupying zero space then why did the act of deleting so many (and then emptying the trash bin) jump up my total used GB from 10.5GB to 11.8GB?  I don't really pay attention to what format the pics are saved but I got an email about my space having only 30% remaining (I was at 10.5GB), I figured (incorrectly as you have informed me) that it was due to high amounts of google photos.  I then deleted (maybe 200-300?, I wasn't counting) and I saw my total storage space jump up to almost 79% used (now only 21% now remaining). 

Anyway, I will check out 'https://one.google.com/storage/management' to see what's going on.

I'm sorry for what you're experiencing. Unfortunately, none of the volunteers in this forum have access to your account, photos, videos, or other personal information.
 
What you've described is a crime in most countries, and you should take steps to ensure your safety. If someone accessed your device or hacked into your account without consent, and subsequently obtained pictures or videos of you, there are several criminal violations that have already occurred, plus other actions that could constitute violations (depending, of course, on the laws in your location).  
 
Another concern is that such actions may also lead to escalated behaviors such as harassment, blackmail, extortion, or worse. If this really is happening, you should not ignore it or take it as a joke. 
 
For example, accessing your device without permission often falls under the definition of "hacking" and could be a violation of several  federal laws, in addition to multiple state laws as well. Penalties are quite severe. You can find some additional information about computer crime statutes from the National Conference of State Legislatures. 
 
Simply put, there are many serious crimes that may have already been committed by the person who hacked into your device and violated your privacy by obtaining pictures or videos of you.
 
My advice is to contact a lawyer or the police and seek professional help. 

Additionally, I recommend these steps for securing your Google account and data:
- do a security checkup of your account
- do a privacy checkup of your account
- change your Google account password
- enable 2-step verification
- review your Google Play order history for suspicious activity; report unauthorized charges HERE

Good afternoon. If you've uploaded an image file to Google Photos at a smaller resolution than the original, there is no way to reverse this. You would need to have the original file. 
 
Since you're talking about printing a picture, it's important to note a few things for future reference: 
 
If you upload your pictures in Original Quality, nothing is changed at all. If you upload in High Quality, only those pictures larger than 16MP will be reduced to 16MP. For anything smaller than 16MP, Google Photos does not change the resolution. What actually happens is advanced compression of the file to conserve space, but this does not effect the resolution. 
 
You can learn more about the Google Photos upload options from the official Google Photos Help site. 
 
As for printing, there's a great chart on fotoworkspro that lists how big of a printed picture you can get from various image file sizes. Considering that one of the most common larger sizes of photograph prints is 8x10, you can print a picture that size in full quality with a 4 or 5MP file.
 
Since most modern smartphones take photos that are at least 12MP, you shouldn't have any trouble at all printing full quality pictures unless your image file is super tiny, and that would have nothing to do with the Google Photos service anyway.

Sorry,we don’t have the ability to solve problems, but try to share experience to try and locate the issue.
 
 
A complete reset of the Google Photos app might help.
  1. Check the app trash to make sure there are no photos and videos mistakenly deleted
    • Empty the trash
  2. tap the account icon at the top right
  3. tap your email address and select Use without an account 
  4. Power down/up or restart the device
  5. sign in again making sure you are using the correct email
  6. check that the Backup & sync settings are correct and using the correct email
  7. wait until getting photos finishes, could take a while
    • Please wait until it completes leaving the app open and plugged in if necessary.
If that still doesn’t work, install Gallery Go by Google and check the Folders tab to see if you can find the WhatsApp folder.
 
If you find the folder, open it and tap on an image then use the 3 dot menu option: Info and share a screenshot.

I’m sorry to hear that. If WhatsApp was saving the photos then Gallery Go would definitely see the folder.
 
 
You could cut Google Photos out of the investigation by using a files app to find the WhatsApp folder.
 
All I can do is refer you to WhatsApp support for them to advise why the settings are not effective.

Sorry Chavi, you will have to do that direct with WhatsApp - Open WhatsApp, tap the 3 dots then Settings followed by tapping Help.

When we delete something from the phone, the sync action in the app removes it from the cloud also. The same action happens when we delete something in Google Photos, the app removes the matching content from the phone too.
 
Nevertheless, any deleted picture is retained in the bin for sixty days.
 
If your delete action is recent, you will find all the items in the bin. The bin icon becomes visible in the library view. Tap that & recover everything available in the bin.
 
However, if your delete action has already crossed sixty days, or you have emptied the bin inadvertently, there is no way to recover anything through Google Photos.
 
However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app (be sure to not pick one that requires rooting) https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps;
and run a scan for anything to recover.

google photos archive used to make albums of 2000 images then create another but after June 2018 images are now just going into one album making 6000+ images to date, making it difficult to navigate through to delete/manage/edit especially now they are in random order. Going through at get all images visible take 15mins and images i can not click to delete(when i do it shows the first image in the album)

To verify whether you are viewing pictures from the backup, please visit the link https://photos.google.com through any browser on your phone.
Once done, then log into your account & see whether you can find your pics there.
