My Gmail is no longer receiving emails because my Google Photos is taking up all of my Google storage. I do not need Google Photos as my backup anymore but don't know how to get rid of the storage that Google Photos takes up on my account. When I try to delete images on Google Photos, it will delete them from my original device... there has to be an easy way out of this problem, but I can't figure it out. I have Google Photos on my iPhone and also use a PC computer if that helps!

Please go to https://photos.google.com/settings and use the Recover storage button to reduce the storage used to zero.

Also see the help article @Choose the upload size of your photos & videos to make sure that the upload size is set to high quality for all the options of computer and mobile,

Up until the 31st May you can Recover storage at https://photos.google.com/settings to reduce the storage used by Google Photos to zero.

The only change on June 1st that HQ uploads will use storage at a reduced size.

Google Photos has options to back up photos and videos from your computer and devices. Besides digital photos taken with cameras, phones and other devices, photo files can include scans, screenshots, and files people have shared with you over the years.

If you see photos of people you don't recognize and believe it is a privacy issue, we recommend you do the following:

Go to Security Checkup and check for any unknown devices
Do a Privacy Checkup
Change your Google password
For extra security, enable 2-step verification
Review Device Activity and Notifications and look for devices that have recently accessed your Google account and any suspicious activity; remove any devices you do not recognize.
Look for suspicious activity in the "Order history" at Google Play and Report Unauthorized Charges
Set up a recovery phone number or email address

Some reasons for seeing photos of strangers (or unwanted photos from other family members) could be any of the following:

Your Google account shares storage with other products such as Blogger, Google Drive, Google+, Hangouts, and Album Archive (formerly Picasa Web Albums). This means it is possible that you once uploaded images to one of these Google products, and the photo is now being displayed at Google Photos.
You joined someone else's shared folder
You uploaded someone else's files to your Google Drive
You are still signed in on another device
You sold a device (or lost a device) without resetting it to factory defaults and are now seeing the new device owner's photos
You received the images via a messaging application such as Hangouts, WhatsApp
You set up a third party service (digital camera, IFTTT etc) to automatically upload photos to your account
You viewed someone else's photos
You received photos then downloaded or saved them to your device; the photos could potentially get backed up into your Google Photos account
Someone else is using a device that is signed into your Google account (example, you signed into your account on another person's device and forgot to sign out or the device is automatically signing in with your password)

In your mobile device's SD slot is a card with photos from someone else.

What you need to back up photos & videos
Good internet connection.
File sizes that can be backed up. Your files won’t be backed up if they are:
Photos larger than 200 MB or 150 MP
Videos larger than 10 GB.
Items smaller than 256 x 256.
File types that can be backed up.
Photos: .jpg, .heic, .png, .webp, .gif, and some RAW files.
Live photos can be backed up if you use the Google Photos app on your iPhone or iPad.
Videos: .mpg, .mod, .mmv, .tod, .wmv, .asf, .avi, .divx, .mov, .m4v, .3gp, .3g2, .mp4, .m2t, .m2ts, .mts, and .mkv files.
If you try to back up a file type not listed here, it may not work with Google Photos.

Important: Your Google Account storage is shared across multiple products like Google Photos, Google Drive, and Gmail. If you have used all of your storage, you won't be able to back up new files.

However. photos do not get deleted spontaneously without any user-initiated action.

Further, when we delete something from the phone, the sync action in the app removes it from the cloud also. The same action happens when we delete something in Google Photos, the app removes the matching content from the phone too.

Nevertheless, any deleted picture is retained in the bin for sixty days.

If your delete action is recent, you will find all the items in the bin. The bin icon becomes visible in the library view. Tap that & recover everything available in the bin.

However, if your delete action has already crossed sixty days, or you have emptied the bin inadvertently, there is no way to recover anything through Google Photos.

Typically this situation occurs when pictures are unintentionally uploaded in Original Quality, rather than in High Quality.

You and your mother should both visit the official Google Photos Help page that explains the different upload options and how they work.

Also, it's important to keep in mind that the amount of free storage space you have with Google is shared between Google Photos, Google Drive, and Gmail.

This means that email attachments in Gmail, original quality pictures in Google Photos, and certain file types in Google Drive will all reduce the amount of space you have left.

Visit the Google One storage page to see your current storage usage. Visit the Google One Storage Management page to view more comprehensive details about your files along with options for cleaning it up for more space.

This info should go a long way to helping you figure out what's responsible for using your storage.

I went to the management page and it says that I can free like 24MB.
Gmail and Drive are almoust empty.

The Photos app behaves like any other gallery app, with the additional capability of uploading to, downloading from, and displaying images in your Google account. So deleting a picture using the Google Photos app will indeed delete it from your phone, just the same as if you deleted it using your phone's stock gallery app.

If you want to remove the picture file from your device, but leave the photo in your account, you can use the Free Up Space feature, which will remove only those image files that have been successfully backed up to the cloud. Any that have not been uploaded will remain untouched on your device.

You can also selectively choose one or more pictures to delete from your device (different from Free Up Space which will remove all previously pictures and videos). In the Photos app timeline, long-press on a picture to select it, then continue selecting whatever pictures you want to remove. When ready, tap the 3-dot menu icon in the top corner and choose "Delete From Device." This will remove those files from your phone.

Pay attention to the confirmation message that appears. It tells you what will happen if you proceed and also if those image files have not been backed up yet.

This process is different from when you tap the delete icon in the Google Photos app. There, a warning message appears, also telling you what will happen if you proceed. On your phone, that message says, "Remove from Google account & synced devices?"

I am slowly transferring my photos to Google Photos (I am speeding the process up now that Google has changed the high quality photo storage policy)

I used to do the "People Tag" in Picasa then transfer to Google Photos. I know Google Photos has a people tagging feature but, from my understanding it is automatic and not manual. I am afraid that it will miss people that I want tagged (I know I can correct the person tagged once that person has been tagged)

Anyway, all that to ask two things, does Picasa save the people tags within the photo's metadata (it used to save it to a different file) and does Google Photos use that data to automatically tag those people.

I would hate to be spending time on a feature that Google Photos does not use.

Hélas: Google Photos is not as clever as Picasaweb has been (it can't even sort the content of albums on the logical filenumbers given in Picasa), so forget about transferring facetags.

If your files have correct data from your camera (no old scanned stuff) and if you have added neat captions, you will have not much problem if you upload per folder. Just because that is the only way to create identical albums in Google Photos immediately. See upload.

Later you can decide about switching-on face recognition, bit then you will have a lot of work again.

PS: if you have edited a lot, then it is wise to export every folder in Picasa at 2048px size to get good quality files of 1 MB on average with all edits and captions included. And then you should upload these instead of the original folder with much larger files which will look unedited on Google Photos.

2048px is the same quality as used on Picasaweb in the G+ years after 2010 and good enough for normal HD-screens and smaller.

You don't tell us how you have tried, so we can't correct you.

But you are posting on the Google Photos forum, so you should see your phonepictures in your browser (Edge or Chrome) when you open photos.google.com by logging-in with your google-account.

For downloading some pictures, just select one in the left-up corner and choose Download under the 3 dots right-up. Then you will get a normal picture or moviefile in the Downloads folder.

And that file can be viewed in the general Windows viewer immediately.

If not, the file has an abnormal format - but that is unlikely with an Android phone.

By "unsubscribe" I'm assuming you mean that you do not want to use the Google Photos service and instead would like to remove that service from your account.

If that's the case, you can do this by visiting your Google Account management page and following the steps outlined on the official Google Account Help page.

For iOS users, the help page gives the following steps:

On your iPhone or iPad, open the Gmail app .
In the top right, tap your profile picture or initial Manage your Google Account. If you don't use Gmail, go to myaccount.google.com.

We are always looking for ways to improve the Google Photos experience by listening to user feedback and comments. Today, we are starting to roll-out UI changes to make it easier to find your shared memories and the print store.

You’ll now see the Sharing tab as part of the bottom navigation bar, bringing your shared photos back to the home screen allowing you to easily view and manage shared content.
Additionally, the print store* is getting a dedicated entry point in the top left of the app header, making it easier to find so you can get your photos off your phone and into your home.
The Print store will no longer appear in the Library tab, which will still be the home for your Albums, Archive & Trash.

I would provide a screenshot but it wont let me attach any images to this post. So thats helpful. Basically I get the menu bar along the top of the page which is huge and takes up a third of the screen, it has the menu lines icon used on phones on the top left, then says Photos, and then a magnifying glass and three vertical dots. The content part of the page is grey and blank apart from on the right hand side where there is the date scroller. If i click on a year/date then a see a photo but it is zoomed in and blurry, and bigger than the space left on the page so can't see a whole photo.

1. Items deleted from your photos.google.com are stored in trash for 60 days and then are Auto-Deleted from trash and can not be recovered.

2. Items deleted manually from photos.google.com/trash can not be recovered.

3. Items deleted from your YouTube Channel can not be recovered.

4. Items deleted from your Gmail are stored in trash for 30 days and then are Auto-Deleted from trash and can not be recovered.

5. Items manually deleted from Gmail trash can not be recovered.

6. Items deleted from your Google Drive will be stored in Drive Trash for 30 days and then be Auto-Deleted from Trash and can not be recovered.

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Forum.

Could you please try uninstalling and reinstalling the Google Photos app to see if it helps? Also, make sure it is currently up to date.

If that doesn't help, I recommend trying these troubleshooting steps in a sequence and see if any help:

Do a force restart by holding the home and power buttons at the same time until the Apple boot logoappears.
If the application freezes or is not responding, you can force the app to close by holding the power button until the red slider Slide to Power Off appears. Do not slide the slider. Instead, hold the home button for 5 or 6 seconds, and you should be returned to the home screen.

Lastly, you can try the below mentioned steps if all else fails:

Go to Settings.
Turn on Airplane Mode.
Wait a few seconds, and turn it back off.
Tap on the Settings icon.
Select the General menu.
Scroll to the bottom and tap on Reset.
Select Reset Network Settings.
The device will take a minute or so to reboot.

To disable backup for the camera folder, please open the folder through library view. On the next screen, turn off the backup by moving the slider in front of the backup & sync to the left.
That will leave the settings for other folders unchanged.

Connect your phone to your pc with its usb-cable and give permission for data-transfer.

If your pc is a Windows-10, you can start its Photos-app and then choose Import right-up and choose the right folder for importing all and there they will get copied if you select all.

Please note that, due to a variety of reasons, not all files can be recovered - but you can try!

1. Items deleted from your photos.google.com are stored in trash for 60 days and then are Auto-Deleted from trash and can not be recovered.

2. Items deleted manually from photos.google.com/trash can not be recovered.

3. Items deleted from your YouTube Channel can not be recovered.

4. Items deleted from your Gmail are stored in trash for 30 days and then are Auto-Deleted from trash and can not be recovered.

5. Items manually deleted from Gmail trash can not be recovered.

6. Items deleted from your Google Drive will be stored in Drive Trash for 30 days and then be Auto-Deleted from Trash and can not be recovered.

1).If you are using a regular personal account

You can install the OneDrive app and sync to the Windows 10 Camera Roll. If you move the photos from there to local storage there is no need to pay extra for OneDrive storage.
