Free unlimited applies to High Quality uploads until June 2021 for everyone, no need to pay.

Storage can be reduced to 0bytes anytime up to 31st May by going to Settings - Google Photos - Tap here

and using the Recover storage option.

Photos uploaded in High Quality after June 1st count against the free 15GB allowance at reduced MB

How do I make sure that only the new photos I want to transfer are "High quality" while the photos that are already in Google Photos are in full/original quality?

How much can you enlarge the photos without the quality being inferior (e.g. when you print an enlargement)? And you mean that they look brighter than they actually are, so when I print the photos they would come out darker with lower contrast than I would view them in Google Photos?

You mentioned initially that the rest could not be transferred due to limited space, it’s possible that the app will not respond to the change to High Quality (stick) without further action, despite the logical assumption that it should continue without a problem. Reinstalling the app may be required to reset things (clearing the app data)

Impossible for me to answer, too subjective. Only you can decide. HEIC may just look bad on my computer and print perfectly, never tried. 12MP HQ jpg photos printed at 30cm x 40cm look perfect to me.

iCloud is web centric with the original photos stored online. Unless you have a very large internal memory you would need to have Apple Photos settings at ‘optimised’ which downloads a small copy of the photo to the device which only pulls in the original when you select it.

The backup process needs to continually download batches, back them up, reclaim space, download the next batch and so on. It takes a very long time.

You should try going to photos.google.com and searching for all your photos. If you have more than one Google account, check all of them to confirm were those photos might be.

Check the trash - photos.google.com/trash

Once you delete photos from your Google Photos account, they're moved to Trash for the next 60 days. If you deleted them by mistake you can always restore them from the Trash folder within those 60 days. Here's the link explaining how to recover them from Trash. If you have more than one Google account, check the trash for all of them.

If you accessed the Trash and manually sent the photos for permanent deletion, or if the 60 days expired, there is no way to recover them from Google Photos.

visit picasaweb.google.com and search for your photos.
have you made any backups of the photos on your phone, camera, computer, or elsewhere?
there is a small chance that you can restore the photos using a recover deleted photos app.
you can contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Use the Google Drive contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.
If you ever shared the photos with anyone else, it's possible they may have a copy they could share back or send to you.

I noticed the other day when attempting to edit a photo that there are now ads for Google One inside Google Photos. Wtf? This is infuriating, I'm somebody who has been using Google products and services for years (even bought the original Pixel XL on launch day in 2016, still have it) and while I understand that Google is an ad company they are typically not this egregious and still deliver a premium software experience first and foremost. I'd expect this type of behavior from Samsung but not Google.

Ironically, I've been thinking purchasing a yearly Google One subscription but I now won't simply on principle. As a customer I feel insulted.

For now I've disabled Google Photos on my OnePlus 9 Pro and am backing my photos up to Microsoft OneDrive. I've also thought about switching to Amazon Photos since I'm already a Prime subscriber and they have unlimited original quality photo uploads as well.

Really though, I'd like to use Google Photos because I'm generally happy with the app's design and presentation. I am however really bothered by ads and I literally can't use the app without mental pain until the ads are removed. This whole ordeal has me thinking my next phone might be an iPhone.

My usual answer to this is: simply do neglect such adds, because you still can do all normal edits without using such adds.

Besides: you better can sync your phone-pc pictures to pc via the OneDrive-app, because there they can be edited and organised in a much more comfortable and professional way and then selectively uploaded into some albums on Google Photos at high quality for the sake of sharing with family & friends, but also backupped on external disc to make yourself less dependant on "clouds only".

And instead of Amazon, you also can use the OneDrive-cloud for a primary backup at original quality if you have a subscription to Microsoft-365 including 1 TB at OD. If not, you can avoid filling the OD-cloud by dragging the synced pictures out of the Camera-folder on pc into a non-synced folder.

I downloaded Google Photos app by a friends advice. I backed up all my photos to my account. Everytime it uploads around 100 photos it was asking me if i want to delete original photos from my phone that way it can clear some storage. I said yes to all of them. I deleted almost all of my photos from my phone inside Google photos app and go back and deleted them from recently deleted album.

Then i had a notification that says I am out of storage. I went to settings > general > storage and i saw that Photos app still taking so much space. I went to my photos app to be sure that i had no photos inside my phone. There were around 230 photos. I plugged my phone to my computer and calculated file size of these photos and videos. It was around 2.30 gb. I tried to reset my phones all settings. I did that and it didn't work.

I opened I tunes to see if there are any photos in my phone. I saw that it says there is 4715 photos. But Google app should've deleted all my photos shouldn't it?

Regrettably, Google Photos doesn't provide much support to utilise that information.
Nevertheless, you can use the background blur option to enhance the depth perception.
But, to convert your existing images & make them suitable for 3D printing, you will have to look for some specialized apps.

Is there a way to automatically add Google's AI generated tags/categories to photo file meta-data so that I can search for these when I download local versions of the photo files?

I do not know of a way to do this. Even data you added (Descriptions, changed date/time) are lost when downloading. Some are found in the .json files you get when using Google Takeout, but you will have to use other programs to add them to the photo's metadata. I suspect that the AI generated tags are not included in the .json files, but I never checked. Let us know if you find out.

No Google AI is transferable, even the estimated location (often wrong or not precise enough).
