I have Windows 10 Pro on a Dell laptop, on which I am trying to use Google Backup and Sync for my photos. It worked seamlessly on my previous Windows 10 machine (a Lenovo desktop), but ever since I moved to using this laptop (I no longer have the desktop), I get the error shown on the attached screenshot and referred to in the subject line of this post.

I have tried reinstalling the app, restarting the PC, temporarily disabling my AVG anti-virus and nothing seems to have worked. I just dont get why on the same version of Windows, using my same google account, it won t work. The only difference is that I'm using a laptop not a desktop. Very poor! The only way I am getting photos onto google photos now is from my phone or manually from my computer.

I frequently take a lot of photos of my children playing sport and a google photo backup is essential, so it is very frustrating...especially as it worked before...only two months ago.

The recommended answer did the trick for me. Just to clarify, go to One Drive on your PC, Settings, then click the Settings tab. Where is shows Files On-Demand, un-check "Save space and download files as you use them". This is the only change I made and now Google Backup and Sync is working again!

You are working in the app-version of the Chrome-browser.

Just try opening photos.google.com in the in-private window of the Edge-browser in order to bypass all disturbing extensions. Quite likely that works normal.

If that is i guess that you have installed a nasty extension (game?) in your Chromebrowser.

Or you may have switched-on outdated Flashsupport for some old game.

Did you use the free up space option in the app but now get back all the pics to the gallery?

Either, you can download photos one by one. Regrettably, there is no option to do so on a batch of photos.

Alternatively, you can install the Google One app there is a one time option to restore up to two hundred most recent photos to the device.

However, the local folder structure can not be restored.

To do so, there is no requirement to join Google One, the option is available to everyone.

However, the method may not be effective to recover something when the count is more than two hundred.

Or, you can arrange for a bulk download by visiting the link https://takeout.google.com/ 

Select the Google Photos app for data download.

Once the file is ready, you will get an email. Access that & unzip all the attachments into your phone's gallery.

That will bring everything to your phone.

This is just a guess, but maybe your Google Photos > Photo Settings > Notifications is off for the Creations toggle. Even if it is you can either navigate to Creations or in the iOS app specify "Creations" in the "Search your photos" box. Or, via web (if in the same account): https://photos.google.com/u/0/search/_m10_Creations

I just successfully created a "Mother's Day" movie using the web interface (https://photos.google.com/movies/create ) though I did not get a notification.

I seem to have been unsuccessful in creating the "Father's Day" movie using iOS. I am not sure if it is just delayed or a real problem.. I would suggest that you try creating via a computer (or a browser on iOS) then check https://photos.google.com/foryou in about 20 minutes... It might take a long time for me to figure out what is really going on.

You don't explain why you have switched to a new account, because if done because of space, you probably will run into the same problem after transferring depending on your quality-setting.

Anyhow: if your accounts are not shared with your partner, you can use temporary partner sharing to get this job done - but without albums. So if your old albums are more holy then your old stream, you share them one-by-one instead.

Good evening. At this time, there is no way for Google Photos to automatically create albums based on the folders in Google Drive.

You might benefit from reading the official Google Photos Help page:

How Google Photos works with Google Drive

So, at least for now, the only way to make the albums you want in Photos is to move the pictures from Drive to Photos. My recommendation is to do this one folder at a time because as you upload pictures using the Google Photos website you're presented with a dialog asking if you want to add those pictures to an album. That's where you can create your new albums without getting things mixed up (because afterward Photos will organize the pics you upload based on the date they were created).

When you have a folder with photos in Google Drive, and have "Google Drive" activated in https://photos.google.com/settings you find an album with the photos of the folder in Drive by searching for the folder title. I learned that from this thread: https://support.google.com/photos/thread/638150

When the above is correct you can use that album to create a "normal" one. I wonder why there is no easy way to do so.

Many posts here are deprecated because Google changed the relation between Drive and Photos in July 2019. You still have to create albums manually, but the method to create albums from folders in Drive changed (that was the original question):

In https://photos.google.com/ click "Upload"
Select "Google Drive"
Open a folder
Select the photos you want to upload (on computer: use Shift for a range)
Click UPLOAD (right lower corner)
You can now click "View" in the pop-up, or click in the search bar > Show more > Recently added which brings you to https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_
You can now select them (for example via check mark to the left of "Added today") and add to an album.

Possible issue: identical photos that were already uploaded will be skipped and not shown in "Recently added". That may make them hard to find in the library. When you upload from a computer you can add them directly to an album by drag & drop or via Select photos > From computer. Photos that were already uploaded will not be uploaded again, but still added to the album. They forgot to add "From Drive" in an album.

I do not normally use this option, just tried it once. I hope that I missed something. Anyone knows a better method?

Does not matter which phone you have - it all depends on your skills in using the Google Photos app correctly and that is quite complex hélas due to its complex design. But there is a lot of Helpinfo.

What you see in the app are the pictures on your phone - full stop.
What you don't see are the pictures at Google, because they are in the cloud at photos.google.com

But you can see these pictures in the Edge or Chrome browser on your laptop at photos.google.com if you log-in with the account used in the backupsettings of the app, so backup should be switched-on.

Else you pictures on phone never will reach the cloud.

See settings > backup under your profile.

PS: that cloud is private & safe. But if there are very special reasons you don't want to have them in your private Google-cloud, you need to be more clear what you are trying to do then.

Although there are multiple ways to transfer the content from the internal memory of the phone to an SD card, the SanDisk that you mentioned in your post, doing so through Google Photos allows retaining the backup and sync aspect.

Please follow the steps below to achieve the transfer.

Open Google Photos.
Tab Library.
Tap the desired folder under Photos on the device like Camera, Screenshots etc.
Select photos by long pressing then tap others after the tick confirms the first selection
You can also long-press and stroke down while still in a pressed condition, to select a batch.
Next, tap the 3 dot menu top right.
Tap Move to folder.
Tap New SD folder, type a folder name then tap Create.

Note that if the photos are backed up to Google Photos this will not remove them from the Photos, and even if the new folder is not selected for Backup & sync any contents will still be deleted if you delete that using the Google Photos app.

I would look into the recently deleted folder in the Apple Photos app - that's your last resort for 30 days.

Deletions in the Google Photos app also delete the originals on iPad because you see your originals.

The copies at Google are on photos.google.com like the copies at iCloud.com

The Sync aspect of "Backup and Sync" doesn't seem to be working like it used to on Android.

If I take 10 photos at an event, and delete 4 of them from my phone (the device's storage), those 4 photos are not deleted from my Google Photos gallery.

There used to sometimes be a short 1 or 2 hour delay for this "syncing" to take place. But now, I check days later, and the photos/videos I deleted from my phone are still in Google Photos.

This is not a big deal now. But it will be when June 1st arrives, and Google begins charging for every photo and video synced to Google Photos, on that date forward.

The photos/videos that I deleted from my phone's gallery, will be accumulating and running up my Google Photos storage $$$ expense, as time passes.

What can I do to ensure that the "Sync" function of Backup and Sync works like a Sync function is supposed to work? Right now, it's not doing that between my Samsung phone's gallery and Google Photos.

Hello Allen,

You described the correct operation, Google Photos should not sync deletions unless performed in the app or online.

The only thing I can think of is that you used to delete before the device had chance to backup, possibly a setting prevented the app from backing up in the background and this has changed due to an Android upgrade.

If you delete from within the Google Photos app it will solve the problem,

Your reply caused me to remember that several months ago, I changed my Backup and Sync to be active either on the Mobile network, or when connected to Wi-Fi. Prior to that, I had Backup and Sync set to only be active when connected to Wi-Fi. Most of the photos and videos are at sporting or family events where there is no Wi-fi. I delete photos/videos before returning to a Wi-Fi environment. So that explains why I thought the "Sync" aspect of Backup & Sync was a 2-way street. It's really only a 1-way street.

I think I'll just keep Back-up and Sync turned OFF by default. And just turn it on when I'm ready to back-up the event's pictures/videos to Google Photos.

Your explanation also opens the door to more flexibility when it comes to deleting photos/videos from the device itself. Now, I can delete certain batches of photos/videos from my Samsung phone, without worrying about having them deleted from the Google Photos cloud. That's great news!

BTW...Please tell Google not to "lock" their threads so quickly. I wanted to add my question to a thread that was already created by another user, but it was LOCKED. Also, I wanted to thank one of your colleagues in another thread for a helpful answer that also helped me, but it was LOCKED.

Hi Allen,

The subject of Locking is a complicated one. We concentrate on newly raised questions for which we have a report to assist. Adding questions on to existing threads depends on the vigilance of the PEs and lots are missed, so the best way is to raise a new question.

If you click on the 3 dots above right from the question description you can 'Get link' to copy/paste into a new question if required.

This also allows for better prioritisation, because individual questions can be easily counted, whereas one question with others asking does not get reported automatically.

Free-up spacing only removes pictures from your phone which already were copied to Google and apparently that was 1.7 GB only (don't know why).

But check on one.google.com/storage how much really is used at Google for the 3 main and private applications: Drive, Gmail and Photos.

Then come back to report if you still have problems.

Just wondering if they were deleted for your device and are now only online at https://photos.google.com/ but you should still be able to see them in the Photos app on your mobile, perhaps further down the page.

When you select the "gallery" in Instagram does it indicate which folder they are in, or do you subsequently select Photos which additionally shows the online photos,
