Sorry to note you lost a large amount of pictures on the SD card

However, you should not have assumed that every picture is backed up simply because those were visible in Google Photos.

The Google Photos app works like a portal viewer & shows all the pics on the phone along with the one backed up on the cloud.

The best way to delete pics is through the "Delete from device" option in Google Photos. That ensures a backup is available in Google Photos.

Still, you can give a try to locate the pictures in the Google Photos bin.

If nothing is there, then regret, there is no way to get back your pictures through Google Photos.
You will have to use some deleted file recovery app to get back the pics on the SD card.

and run a scan for anything to recover.

If they were correctly backupped, you still would see them in the Google app, assuming that you are logged-in with the same account for viewing as the account used for backupping.

Google Photos does reject identical pictures, so they are not fully identical but look-alikes.

Probably you are pressing the shutter a bit too long, so your camera makes 3 shots instead of one.

You can change that function in the camerasettings.

All my motion photos from before the update all became just plain static photos since the app didn't have the functionality at the time.

Is there a way to re-upload older photos (from before the update) in order for my google photo library to also capture the motion?

There's no easy way to do it, but your two choices are:

1) Delete the current photos (first be sure to move the motion photos to a new folder on your phone that Google Photos does not sync so they don't get deleted from the phone too). Then, delete the app data for Google Photos and Google Play Services. Once this is done you can manually back up your motion photos.

2) Copy the motion photos to your computer and make some small change (an easy one is to edit the timestamp on all photos by 1 second, you can use Picasa 3 or I think Microsoft may have a photo editor app that can make timestamp changes in bulk). You can then upload the motion photos via photos.google.com- it's up to you if you want to first delete the current non-motion copies of these photos from Google Photos, or leave them and have a still and motion versions of the same images.
