Then that creates a problem in maintaining continuity.
Nevertheless, thanks to letting know that you can view the pics through the web link.
Now, in the app, please deactivate backup & sync if that's on.
Next, clear the cached & stored data of the Google Photos app & then reinstall the app.
You can do that through these steps.
- On your Android phone, open the Settings.
- Tap Apps and notifications.
- Tap Show all apps.
- Tap Google Photos.
- Tap Storage and cache.
- Tap Clear storage.
- Next, uninstall the Google Photos app.
- Power off the phone & then restart.
- Install the latest version of the Google Photos app through the Play Store.
Log into your profile & see whether the app can load all the pics.
Switch on the backup and sync once again.
Nevertheless, if your phone has limited free space, you will be facing this problem repeatedly.
Please try to free up as much space as possible.

Here are some recommendations to follow taken from previously suggested answers. Follow them to explore ways in which it can be of help to you.
1. Check your online account - photos.google.com
If your photos were successfully uploaded to your online Google Photos account they may be available there. Try visiting photos.google.com and searching for them. If you have more than one Google account, check all of them.
2. Check the trash - photos.google.com/trash
Once you delete photos from your Google Photos account, they're moved to Trash for the next 60 days. If you deleted them by mistake you can always restore them from the Trash folder within those 60 days. Here's the link explaining how to recover them from Trash. If you have more than one Google account, check the trash for all of them.
If you accessed the Trash and manually sent the photos for permanent deletion, or if the 60 days expired, there is no way to recover them from Google Photos.
3. Review other options
- if you previously used Picasa, visit picasaweb.google.com and search for your photos.
- check get.google.com/albumarchive to see if there are any hidden albums containing posts to other Google apps
- have you made any backups of the photos on your phone, camera, computer, or elsewhere?
- there is a small chance that you can restore the photos using a recover deleted photos app (Android). I haven't used them myself so have no specific recommendations. There may well be more app options if you visit the appropriate app store and try other search terms. I don't see any similar apps on the iOS store, but you could check yourself.
- If the files were deleted in Google Drive you can contact the Google Drive support team to see if the deleted files may be recovered. Use the Google Drive contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.
- If you ever shared the photos with anyone else, it's possible they may have a copy they could share back or send to you.

The delete options on Android are as follows
- Free up space checks that a photo is backed up then deletes it from the local storage
- Delete in the Google Photos app using the trash
- Deletes both the device copy and the backed up web copy
- If internet access is available the photo is put in the web trash and is permanently deleted after 60 days
- If Internet access is not available the photo is put in the app trash and is permanently deleted after 30 days or when the app data is deleted
- Delete in the app using the 3 dot option to Delete from the device, either singly or by selecting a batch
- The photos remain backed up and can be seen both in the app and on the web
- Delete using a Gallery app (Gallery Go etc)

If you use option 2 then both copies will be deleted,

Thank you for that link. Under Albums as shown in the screenshot I was able to click on the up/down arrow and select Album title which did put them into alphabetical order. However, there were only 2 showing and a further box with a + in it where a new album could be added. The rest of my albums are shown just above this under the title Photos on Device. When I click on View All I get a grid with all my other albums but not the 2 under albums. I'm very confused. Can any light be shed on this? Thanks.

That option you're referring to "view all" is for the section of photo' on device. It will normally show you all the folder which is on your device.
When you click view all it won't show you album created on google photos during that time.
That option was meant to be use for photo on device option.
