The Google app always shows your content like any Gallery, but it depends on your backupsettings if that content is copied to Google also or not.

Maybe you are misleaded by free storage at Google, but with so much Apple stuff around, I would suggest to start with iCloud and just remove the Google app.

Because after June 1 storing at Google will not be for free anymore either for new stuff uploaded after that date.

A backup is for safety, unless that content is not relevant to be kept for years.

But you are not clear about that.

If you have used original quality in your settings, you always will run out your free base of 15 GB at Google and you will need to pay for more space at Google.

But you can have them compressed to high quality by using the Recover storage button on photos.google.com/settings and then your counter goes back to zero if you do this before June 1.

Thereafter you also should switch your setting to high quality, but after June 1 also this quality will get counted slowly - so perhaps you need to decide to backup nothing, unless straight to your computer.

Not clear why you using the Google Photos app then, because the app always your content - not the content at Google: that can be seen at photos.google.com if backupped really. So that is why deleting in the app is deleting from iPhone also - you can't prevent that.

Like most iphone-users you may have been attracted by free storage at Google instead of paying for Apple iCloud, but I do think that is a wrong decision.

So you have to be more clear about your future and if you don't do anything relevant with your contents at Google, I may suggest to remove the Google app completely if you are using no related Google-services like Gmail and Drive either. See one.google.com/storage

The contents in Albums can be (re)sorted on dates only: see Edit album under the 3 dots and then hit the tiny up-and-down arrows.

But with such a mixed content, there also can be troubles due to other timezones or missing timezones due to no gps in that camera or just incorrect dates & times because of lazy owners :-)

On photos.google.com you are able to change incorrect timezones like shown below:

So it may become a tuff job.

PS: pictures recieved via social media never have correct dates and will not show camera-info either.

Hello, please help! I have an Android Samsung Galaxy S7 phone and my memory is now at capacity. I have all my photos stored in folders under my gallery plus a memory card. I also have an Acer Chromebook linked to my account. I have spent several hours trying to understand the relationship between Google Photos, Google Drive and how they interact with my device, and I'm now very confused!

Ideally I essentially want ALL of my photos saved in Google Photos, like a safe and reliable external hard drive of everything. I want to organise them into folders (which I know how to do), but if I delete something I don't want it to delete it on my device unless I instruct it to.

Ideally, I don't want any photos to appear at all in Google Drive, but if this is unavoidable I want them automatically organised into the folders I create in Photos.

I still want to keep some of these photos on my phone, but delete the rest to free up storage. From what I understand I don't think I can use the 'free up space' option because I think that deletes ALL backed-up photos from my device rather than ones I select?

I still want to back-up my device on the cloud, but not have pictures deleted in the cloud because they no longer appear on my device, or have them repeatedly re-instated on my device because they all appear on the cloud.

I still want to be able to delete photos on the cloud because I no longer want them there, but still keep a copy on my phone - at the moment it appears if I delete a picture in Photos it deletes it everywhere = Photos, Drive and device.

I will need to pay for additional storage but am reluctant to do so yet when it doesn't appear I can use Photos in the way I want to. I hope this all makes sense, and thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

Indeed: you only can select "Remove from album" which does keep the original on the Photos-page and in other albums (albums are in Google-cloud only).

But on https://photos.google.com/albums you have two deletion-options in albums: Remove from album and Remove completely (also from mainstream).

I only can guess why Google did not include the trasbin in albums on Android, probably because of preventing loosing originals by "simple users" too easy.

But there is no Google here, so you need to suggest this straight to Google via the feedback option in the app under your profile.

PS: if you delete on the Photos-page, these pictures will be removed from any albums there were assigned to (remember: albums at Google Photos only contain links, no copy files).

Could you please elaborate the issue or your query for me to assist you better? If you've deleted them from Google Photos and want to restore them, please know that photos/videos deleted from the Google Photos library, goes to the Trash for the next 60 days. So, in case, you deleted it by mistake you can always restore it from Trash folder within those 60 days (post deletion). But, if you don't find it in Trash, probably it must have been deleted more that 60 days ago. Unfortunately, restoring your lost/deleted photos and videos from Trash is the last resort.

The free-up space option in the Google app is meant to clean-up your phone for making space for new pictures - not to clean-up your space at Google.

For that you need to go into the backupsetting in the Google app under the 3 small lines (via Settings) and there you can find the Recover storage button.

But maybe you hardly use any space at Google because almost nothing was backupped - the app only can work when it is held open, because an iPhone does not like operation in background. Amd if backupped in high quality setting, you will use no storage at google even they are backupped.

So your situation is not clear to me and don't start deleting yourself untill this is figured out.

I don't utilize the iPhone - iCloud system.

Honestly I have no business using an iPhone, but I do, because my sister travels out of the country and my android at the time could not communicate with her iPhone so I purchased an iPhone.

I like the google cloud for my photos.

I am not sure what is causing this, it might be just that the number of photos is too many. Also think about whether you need to keep some photos in the camera roll for sharing to other apps. Once deleted from the camera roll they are not available for sharing on Facebook etc. Other apps can only see what is physically on the camera roll.

Open Apple Photos and select a small batch of photos then delete them, they will go into the Recently deleted folder.
Go to https://photos.google.com/ to check the photos are still backed up at Google Photos
Check https://photos.google.com/trash to make sure nothing has been placed in the trash
Empty the Recently deleted album on Apple Photos
Repeat 2 and 3

Repeat with a larger batch until you have cleared enough space for it not to be a problem for you then pause for a day or so to see if any of your day to day actions are impacted then recheck the backed up status.

Once you have some headroom you could try deleting the Google Photos app, power down/up the iPhone and re-install.

Apologies for it being a time consuming process, but small steps can be undone and caution is wise,

That's impossible.

You first need to download to your computer, then unzip the folder and then you can move the normal folder to the usb-drive and delete the zip-folder.

But downloading only can be done from selected groups of about 500 - so if you have 50K, you will have to repeat that action 100x - not very comfortable.

So why you want to do that?

Answer:

You can download all images at once (in Zip Files) using this tool: Google Takeout. The images downloaded from Takeout will include separate versions of original and (Google Photos) edited versions of Google Photos, which can be messy, and some find the number of Zip Files created inconvenient, but I've had no trouble with it.

Another way to accomplish this with more control, though less convenient, is to select and download individual images or groups of images or Albums and then select Download from the blue selected menu that appears near the top of the screen.

Let me know if this helps (and if it does please select the Recommend button below this post so that others can more easily find the solution to similar problems).

Why I did not include Take-out in my advice?

Because that method looks very convenient, but creates very hard to use garbage.

If I would apply the method, I would get 2293 dayfolders in some very large zips - most with a few pictures only and additional textfiles with metadata (json) which merely are useless.

But I only have 22 decent albums which would valuable to download and that can be done one-by-one much better, because then I get no additional json garbage etc.

And then you also can create a very decent copy on external disc which directly can be used on a new computer also.

However: many never have created decent albums unless a few for sharing.

So the really good advice is: start to create yearalbums, because these can be downloaded directly.

But Karen did not tell about her situation and her goal and then it always is difficult to give a really good advice.

When we delete something from the phone, the sync action in the app removes it from the cloud also & vice versa,

Nevertheless, any deleted picture is retained in the bin for sixty days,

If your delete action is recent, you will find all the items in the bin. The bin icon becomes visible in the library view. Tap that & recover everything available in the bin.

However, if your delete action has already crossed sixty days, or you have emptied the bin inadvertently, there is no way to recover anything through Google Photos.

However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app (be sure to not pick one that requires rooting) https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps 

and run a scan for anything to recover.
