Answer:

Hello Natasha,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Help Forum.

I understand how important the photos are for you and I'll try my best to help. It can be possible that the photos weren't uploaded successfully to Google Photos (cloud) and also make sure you're logged in to Google Photos with the same Google Account that you used during the backup. Photos/videos that are not synced or backed up, will still appear in Google Photos and will have this icon  (which means not synced/backed up) or some photos/videos will also show up with the two arrows in a circle mean backup is in progress.

Once the upload is complete there will be no icon on any photos/videos. Often, many of us misinterpret that they are all backed up because the photos/videos show up in Google Photos and we over see the icons on each photo/video. If the photos/videos weren't backed up they cannot be deleted from the Google Photos library nor Trash.

In case, you are uploading a large amount of data (photos/videos), please know that it might take 24-48 hours for the photos and videos to sync across all devices. Please ensure to have 'Backup & sync' enabled on the Google Photos settings while you're backing up your photos and videos. To check is the content is backed up, login in to photos.google.com to checked for your backed up photos and videos.

However, if you're sure they were backed up, I recommend you looking for your video here:
If a photo/s is deleted from Google Photos, it would go to Trash/Bin for the next 60 days (after deletion). Unfortunately, if the photos aren't found in Trash or deleted from Trash, I'm afraid, you might not find them else where to recover them because Trash is the last resort to retrieve your lost/deleted photos.

Meanwhile, also try giving the below steps a try once again in a sequence to help resolve the issue:
  • Close the Google Photos app and re-launch it.
  • Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos with the same Google Account.
  • Clear App data:
    • Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
    • Touch Apps.
    • Select Google Photos in the list.
    • Touch Clear data.
  • Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:
    • Visit the Google Play Store.
    • Open Google Photos.
    • Touch on Update.
Let me know how it goes.

Best,
Amanda

Facial recognition not an option in settings. How annoying!

Answer:

What do you mean by "grouped by location"? Do the photos themselves have a location on them and you're not seeing a Places section in Albums?

For face grouping, where are you located? This feature is not available in all countries.

Question: I have a Moto 7 and my daughter got me a new memory card. How do I move my photos to my memory card?

I tried creating a new folder

Hello Ruth,
  1. Open Google Photos
  2. Tab Library
  3. Tap the desired folder under Photos on device
  4. Select photos by long pressing then tap others after the tick confirms the first selection
    • You can also long press and stroke down to select a batch
  5. Tap the 3 dot menu top right
  6. Tap Move to folder
  7. Tap New SD folder, type a folder name then tap Create
Note that if the photos are backed up to Google Photos this will not remove them from the Photos view and even if the new folder is not selected for Backup & sync any contents will still be deleted if deleted using the Google Photos app.

You should also have a setting in your camera app which saves new photos to the SD card.

Question: Not sure why google photos is not uploading all my pictures from my iPhone everyday?

I uploaded my photos everyday but google photos doesn't back all photos anymore only a few. I'm not …

Hello there,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Help Forum.

Unable to back up photos can sometimes be upsetting. I'd recommend trying the below steps to check if they resolve the issue:
  1. Open the Google Photos app on your mobile device .
  2. At the bottom, tap Assistant .
  3. Read the first card. If it says:
  • "Back up & sync is off": Tap "TURN ON" on the card to back up your device's photos and videos, including ones you capture in the future.
  • "A photo or video was skipped": A photo or video on your mobile device doesn't meet our upload requirements:
    • Photos can't exceed 75MB or 100 megapixels.
    • Videos can't exceed 10GB.
It does take approximately 24-48 hours for the photos and videos to sync across all devices. Please ensure to have 'Backup & sync' enabled on the Google Photos settings while you're backing up your photos and videos. It's possible that Google Photos is merely scanning your library again, the scan will take some time, but it shouldn't re-upload the photos entirely as duplicates. The app may look like it's doing this but it's actually doing a re-scan of the photos.

If the issue still persist after 24-48 hours, please uninstall and reinstall the Google Photos app on your iOS device and login with the same Google Account to check if this sorts the issue.

Let me know how it goes.

Cheers,
Amanda

I went through the check list and everything is correct. I've deleted the app and reinstalled it but it's still not uploading all the pictures. My phone is running out of storage, could this be a possibility that it won't upload all my photos or it doesn't make a difference?

Answer:

Hi there,

Thanks for writing back.

I'll be happy to help you further. Could you please try the same on a different device (iOS, if possible) or differentaccount to check what happens next and to know if this is a device specific issue or account related issue.

Answer:

I also have the same issue and have read the information provided before.  I have an iPhone X.  I also have settings to upload on cellular data, as I have unlimited data and would prefer for my phone to back up ASAP so-as to mitigate losing memories if my device becomes no longer accessible.

With my experience on this issue, I find this very inconvenient when attempting to share photos/videos, that I must be on the backup screen to force the app to backup my memories.  However, I will say sometimes I will move beyond this step where it says all items are uploaded, however when I try to create an album and I will get another notification of remaining items needed to be uploaded.  This is quite alarming as it's very difficult to determine what is truly backed up without doing this or using a secondary device to validate.  Please look into this as I pay for storage and this is not favorable behavior for a paying customer.

Thank you-

Here's the content of a feedback submission I sent through Google Photos:

Allowing archived photos to appear in general search and 'Explore' results is akin to setting individuals up for unnecessary embarrassment. What is the purpose of archiving if not to suppress sensitive content from casual viewing?

Google Photos must add a feature allowing users to restrict access to selected images. At very least this ought to be implemented as a setting to hide archived content from all general searches, albums and 'Explore' results.

If your response is that the archive feature is working as intended then I say let's not mince words.

Call it what you will; what I'd like to see is a password-protected, plausibly-deniable secure enclave from which images are visible to me alone, and not to an opportunistic family member who has happened upon my unlocked phone and whom I've discovered on the sofa swiping through vacation photos.

Including those marked for archive.

May you never know such terror.

Archived photos MUST NOT appear in general searches!

Answer:

Hello Manish,

Head over to https://one.google.com/storage/management and check if the storage is in any of the trash places, or large files in Gmail, Drive & Photos, or just below in Unsupported videos. This should give a clue on where the storage is being used.

Up until the 31st May you can Recover storage at  https://photos.google.com/settings to reduce the storage used by Google Photos to zero.

From June 1st new HQ uploads will use storage at a reduced size, HQ upload before June 1st remain free

Answer:

something else you could check, some of the wording doesn’t apply to you, but if there are any ‘hidden’ photos it might be worth trying.

Also, the unsupported videos could take over a week to appear, as they get stuck trying to transcode into a suitable format and might have been corrupted during upload.
  1. Go to Google Dashboard and expand the Photos tab then left click on the 3 dots and select Download data. If you wait a minute until 'All photos albums included' pops up then click on it and deselect all.
  2. Then scroll down and select all the year albums Photos from 2020 etc.  You will now get a single copy of each photo, one json file per photo, and one filename-edited.jpg for each edited photo.
  3. The contents of all manually created albums will also be in the year folders so there is no need to include them because they do not use storage allocation. An album is a collection of links pointing to the year album copies.
  4. Continue to create the download and wait for completion then you will see a summary of the Takeout which will give you the total size. For a quick estimate choose the 50GB output size, there is no need to download unless you want to create an offline archive for security.

@Sébastian
You can sort them manually by just dragging around within the album.
But apart from that: you did not explain why your pictures have random dates or no dates at all.
This usually happens with scanned old prints & slides.
Then you simply should not use Google Photos to prevent a lot of troubles, but if your are on Windows, it is logical to use OneDrive because then you can sort folders on their names and pictures on their numbers.
And if you downsize the pictures to 2048px in batch before uploading, you can put a lot in 5 GB for free.

@Zuser
Although not very wise: if backup is switched-off in the settings of the app right-up, nothing is uploaded to Google. But you always will see what you have on phone like in any gallery.
And you can delete what accidently was uploaded at photos.google.com

But be aware that you should make a backup in another way - else you will loose everything sooner of later.

PS: Google Photos is private and has nothing to do with public Google for websearching.

I've noticed that some photos I add to a shared album develop these weird visual color bands.

As far as I can tell:
1) It only happens to photos that I've cropped, but not *every* cropped photo
2) The original photo doesn't get changed, but the shared version does. Other users see it with the color artifacts, regardless of their device type
3) The color banding looks different for each affected photo, though it's clearly the same "effect"

I've tried resetting and recropping the photos, but the same color banding glitch comes back.

Here's an example of what the original photo looks like (normal) and what it looks like in the shared album (color bands)

Question: W

Hello Melissa,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Help forum.

Google Photos has identical duplicate detection, where if you have uploaded photos to Google Photos already, it will not re-upload the same photo (each photo file has a unique "Hash" that allows us to determine this).

Hence, Google Photos avoids uploading duplicates, when different upload methods or devices are used, as long as the photos aren't edited. There is no easy way to remove duplicates, but some of the following may help:

  1. You can delete duplicates manually, for example in https://photos.google.com/ where they should be next to each other.
  2. The problem is however which one to delete:
    • one photo may be edited, the other not,
    • one photo may be in an album, the other not.
  3. When the upload dates are different (for example when you uploaded long ago via Picasa, and now again using the Desktop uploader). It may be easier to delete the duplicates in https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_ where they are sorted by upload date.
  4. There are more ways to get a useful search result, for example the device from which they are uploaded.
  5. See https://sites.google.com/site/picasaresources/Home/Picasa-FAQ/google-photos-1/how-to/how-to-search-for-photos
  6. Since very recently it is possible to delete photos directly from an album. Go to "More options" (3-dots icon), and use "Move to trash"
  7. When you uploaded in the free "High Quality" and have your photos in albums, it may be wiser to simply ignore the duplicates in the library.
Unfortunately, a feature to sort and delete duplicates of photos with Google Photos that are already backed up doesn't exist. You may have to manually select the duplicates and delete them.

  • Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:
    • Visit the Google Play Store.
    • Open Google Photos.
    • Touch on Update.

Question: Inserting text on photos from an ipad or macbook

How can I insert text onto pictures saved in google photos from an ios device?

@Judy
Strange enough the editor within the Google Photos app on iPad is more primitive then the same one on Android. So you have to install the Google Snapseed app to be able to insert text and much more like nice borders.
Like shown below:

You may need to download a selected picture in the Google-app to your iPad before you can proceed in Snapseed and it will take some time to master this versatile app.

You can't do this in the Safari-browser on your Macbook when viewing photos.google.com

All of the photos were stored in my google photos app on my phone but were not backed up previously. When I turned on "backup and sync" and selected "original" quality for the sync, and my photos are gone. They are not in photos.google.com or in the trash or archives. There are no folders in settings under "Back up device folders." Can I restore the photos that were on my device?

Answer:

Switching-on backup does not delete any pictures on your phone because they are copied to Google.
So you must have agreed with cleaning-up xxx GB from your phone, but even then these files still should be visible on photos.google.com when you log-in with the same account as used in the backup-settings.
And the app also should these pictures if being logged-in under your profile right-up.
That is normal operation.
But the very basic mistake of the whole world is not having a copy on your computer.
Sorry

Answer:

I definitely didn't click on any clean up or free up space option. Like I said, all I did was switch on backup and sync, and then select "original" for the photo quality.

Answer:

Sorry, but that can do no harm.
We are volonteers, so we can't know about any rare bug.
But if you don't pay for additional storage, you can not have any support from Google and you only can send an angry report via the feedback option in the app to warn Google about this mysterious glitch.
However: that will no solve your problem now.

PS: are you really sure about the account you have backupped to?

Answer:

Positive. I even took some new pictures now that backup and sync is activated and it's syncing to all my devices properly. But all of my old stuff is gone. I also did send feedback to Google about it. But thanks for your perspective.

Answer:

Thanks
Neverthess I will discuss your mystery with other expert-volonteers and that will take time.
Best

PS: your first sentence was wrong because nothing is stored in the app with backup off.

The app always shows your content on phone. But with backup on, that content is copied to Google (photos.google.com) and the app makes a hidden database with links to its webcontent.
If you would delete your local content via some other gallery-app, the Google-app still will show the same pictures, but then you are viewing their webcopies because the locals are not in place anymore.

Answer:

Sorry, we have no clue why this could have happened.

Maybe you have deleted a lot on photos.google.com because you want to exchange high quality pictures with original quality ones. And with backup on in the app, that also will delete your original files.
Is that what you may have done?

I'm scanning Mom and Dad's negatives using a Wolverine Digital Negative Converter.  I scan each roll of negatives onto a memory card and then upload to Google photos using Backup and Sync.  I usually scan 5 - 10 rolls of film(negatives) in an evening and then upload to my computer.  When the photos are uploaded, they are all scrambled up...no longer in the order that was scanned. Is there anyway to keep the photos in the order in which they are scanned?  After uploading, I change the date to the date the picture was actually taken.  With the photos all scrambled, it takes awhile to select them all to put the original date on.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Answer:

@Kathleen
I also would expect that they automatically were sorted on photos.google.com in the reverse date-order of saving them on the sd-card, but probably mixed with actual pictures shooted with your own phone.
So I have no clue about the cause for their random order.
At uploading you can select that they go into an album immediately and then you can edit their sorting.
Changing the dates in Google Photos can be done in batch for a series: see dates
Be aware that date-changes at Google are not really changing the files, so if downloaded to some computer they still will have their dates of saving on the sd-card. So it maybe more wise to that before uploading on your computer. See dates before
I have gone through the same giant task years agoo, so I know about this timeconsuming complexity.
Stay strong :-)

Now- with that out of the way let's deal with Elistia Lyngdoh's post in  Google Photos.
Please note that, due to a variety of reasons, not all files can be recovered - but you can try!

1. Items deleted from your photos.google.com are stored in trash for 60 days and then are Auto-Deleted from trash and can not be recovered.

2. Items deleted manually from photos.google.com/trash can not be recovered.

3. Items deleted from your YouTube Channel can not be recovered.

4. Items deleted from your Gmail are stored in trash for 30 days and then are Auto-Deleted from trash and can not be recovered.

5. Items manually deleted from Gmail trash can not be recovered.

6. Items deleted from your Google Drive  will be stored in Drive Trash for 30 days and then be Auto-Deleted from Trash and can not be recovered.

1).If you are using a regular personal account
You will have to contact a Google Drive Specialist who *MAY* be able to restore it. Use this link:

2). If you use a work/student account (G Suite), you should contact your Account Admin as they can restore files up to 25 days after deletion.

Question: One day you miss me

Hello Nathan,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Forum.

Could you please elaborate the issue or your query for me to assist you better? If you've deleted it from Google Photos and want to restore them, please know that photos/videos deleted from the Google Photos library, goes to the Trash for the next 60 days. So, in case, you deleted it by mistake you can always restore it from Trash folder within those 60 days (post deletion). But, if you don't find it in Trash, probably it must have been deleted more that 60 days ago. Unfortunately, restoring your lost/deleted photos and videos from Trash is the last resort.

If no, please let me know.

Regards,
Amanda
