Response to Dems response to Trump address Darcy cartoon cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio President Trumps low energy Oval Office address on the border wall funding didnt result in any constructive action, but the Democrats response to it did.

The odd optics/staging of Sen. Chuck Schumers and Rep Nancy Pelosis response resulted in an outpouring of viral mocking memes. And a day later, Pelosis response to Trump resulted in him stomping out of meeting with Congressional leaders on the border wall and government shutdown.

Trump reportedly had to be talked into giving his Oval Office address, and he looked and sounded like it. Schumer and Pelosi also looked like they didnt want to be giving the Democrat response.

The Democrat leaders stood in a large cold marble hallway, crammed behind a single podium, looking like they had been made up by a mortician or theater makeup artist. I kept expecting to see a sweating Sen Marco Rubio reach in and offer Schumer and Pelosi bottles of water.

Trump will be further frustrated to know that Schumer and Pelosi upstaged him by earning higher viewership ratings than his first Oval Office address. However it appears those viewers were too busy creating mocking memes of the odd Schumer Pelosi scene to actually listen to what they were saying.

Tlaibs Trump response looked worse than Pelosi and Schumers.

As bad as the optics looked in the Chuck and Nancy show, Rep. Rashida Tlaibs response to Trump was even worse.

On the day Tlaib was sworn into Congress, she shared with her supporters that she had comforted her son about Trump by telling him, "Were going to go in and impeach the mother asterisk asterisk asterisk asterisk asterisk asterisk !"

Both Democrats and Republicans denounced Tlaibs comment. For Democrat leaders, Tlaib invoking immediate impeachment of Trump was as offensive as the extreme vulgarity she used.

Under Pelosi and Schumer, Democrats official line is that impeachment is a last resort that should only be considered after Mueller issues his report and its reviewed by Congress.

Tlaib has only partially apologized for her comments. She said recently that she now views the incident as a "teachable moment." Tlaib said she understands shes a member of Congress and doesnt "want anything I say or do to distract us." The only thing shell apologize for was that it was a distraction. Tlaib said shell never apologize for "being me...authentic, passionate and upset."

Trump was right when he called her comments "disgraceful" and " a great dishonor to her and her family."

Tlaib should fully apologize. So should Trump for the multitude of times hes brought great dishonor to himself, his family, the office of the presidency, The United States of America and its Constitution.

Trump Sets Record With Longest Government Shutdown Ever - News Today - Duration: 8:55.

The partial government shutdown has now gone on for 22 days, making it the longest such closure in U.S. history.

Many of the affected federal employees had missed at least one paycheck as of Saturday, when the shutdown hit record length. The financial stress is leading some workers to look for other jobs, ask relatives for money, apply for unemployment or even go without essentials like medication. Meanwhile, other Americans are facing a host of inconveniences and hardships, from shuttered museums to delayed farm loans.

"We've dipped into our savings account already. If it keeps going, my husband said he'll call his parents and see if they'll lend us some money," said DeCarann Speaks, a mother of two and the wife of a Border Patrol agent in Vermont who is working without a paycheck. ""

President Donald Trump is insisting that Congress give him $5.7 billion to build a wall on the border with Mexico, a proposition Democrats describe as a costly and immoral boondoggle. With talks at a standstill in Washington, the president headed to the border on Thursday to make his case for the wall. He said he is considering declaring a national emergency to get the funding Democrats have denied him, a maneuver all but certain to be challenged in court.

The impasse has meant that roughly a quarter of federal government functions are no longer funded, with agencies including the Department of Homeland Security, the Interior Department and the Internal Revenue Service largely shut down. Approximately 380,000 federal employees have been furloughed and are out of work, while another 420,000 are still working as "essential" personnel but are not being paid.

The shutdown, which began Dec. 22, was technically the third to take place in 2018, although the first lasted a mere three days, and the second lasted just a few hours and did not result in any furloughs. There have been 21 similar funding lapses since 1976, but only a handful of major shutdowns in which workers went without pay. Until now, the longest one had been a 21-day shutdown starting in December 1995, amid a deadlock between then-President Bill Clinton and congressional Republicans.

The current closure had only marginal impact on the general public at first, when many people were on vacation for the holidays and government offices were closed anyway. But as the shutdown drags on with no obvious end in sight, Americans are growing more aware and more annoyed by the disruption. More than four in 10 Americans now consider the partial shutdown a very serious problem, according to a HuffPost/YouGov poll conducted Jan. 4 to 7.

The Trump administration has tried to mitigate some of the most noticeable effects of the shutdown to avoid public backlash. For instance, the National Park Service kept many parks open but with reduced staff, leading to piled-up trash and damaged vegetation in parks like Joshua Tree.

With the shutdown bleeding into tax season, the Internal Revenue Service is calling some employees back from furlough in order to process refunds after a change in policy from the White House. And the Agriculture Department announced a complicated plan to continue food assistance for the poor into February, to keep people fed and avoid further economic damage.

Government shutdowns are costly affairs. Federal agencies must spend time and energy developing contingency plans in the runup to a closure, then have to make up missed work once the government finally reopens. As the messy situation in national parks has demonstrated, the government's work does not stop just because funds haven't been appropriated for that work. Agencies will face a backlog of responsibilities to handle once they are fully operational again.

Shutdowns can also hurt the broader economy, as workers tighten their budgets due to missed paychecks and consumer confidence dampens. The Bureau of Economic Analysis estimated that the 2013 shutdown of 16 days reduced GDP for the fourth quarter of that year by 0.3 percentage points.

Congress has already appropriated funding for roughly three-quarters of the federal government, leaving many agencies unaffected by the shutdown. House Democrats, who assumed the majority last week, passed bills that would reopen shuttered agencies other than DHS, which is at the center of the funding dispute. But Republican leaders in the Senate have refused to take up those bills and stood alongside the president, who threatened to veto any legislation without full wall funding.

The House and Senate approved a bill to pay all federal employees who have been missing paychecks, including those who were furloughed. But Trump still has to sign the bill. If he does, the workers would not receive any pay until the government reopens and payroll is processed.

Meanwhile, workers must still figure out how to pay their bills without a regular paycheck. Many are turning to interest-free loans or applying for unemployment benefits, which workers must return if they eventually receive backpay.

Trump's threat that the shutdown could go on "for years" rattled many workers unsure of how they'll cover their mortgage and car payments. The shutdown is a particularly raw deal for employees working under federal contracts, as they are not directly employed by the government and typically don't get backpay.

One such worker is Larry Howard, a 62-year-old guest services associate at the National Zoo in Washington. The zoo is part of the sprawling Smithsonian network, which closed on Jan. 2 as a result of the shutdown. Howard said he is employed by a non-profit contractor, the Friends of the National Zoo, earning $13.50 per hour in his part-time position. His last payday was Jan. 4, and he doesn't expect to receive a check next week as he normally would.

Howard had to ask his landlord for leniency on his January rent, paying only $400 of the $800. He also asked for more time to pay his electric bill ― an indignity he says he shouldn't have to suffer.

"The way this situation is, there's no other choice but try to persuade them that they'll get that money ... when I can get it to them," said Howard, who is an activist with Good Jobs Nation, a union-backed group pushing for higher pay for federal contractors. ""

Some Democrats are supporting a bill that would provide backpay for people like Howard who work under federal contracts and lost wages because of the shutdown. Such a bill has not made it into law in the past. "I hope that Congress will step up to the plate and pass some kind of bill for the contractors who aren't getting anything," Howard said.

Speaks, whose husband works for the Border Patrol along the U.S.-Canadian border, said both she and her husband have student loans to repay. She recently earned a degree in medical assisting and her loan repayments began just before the new year, right around the time her husband received his last paycheck.

For now, they are getting by on Speaks' salary at her hospital. Although their two children are just 8 and 9 years old, "They understand that we have to budget really well right now," Speaks said. The family halted their Netflix and Hulu subscriptions and put other non-necessities on hiatus, including a 10-year anniversary trip planned for this year.

Speaks said she found it particularly galling that members of Congress continue to get paid as federal employees work with their paychecks on hold.

"I just really wish they would focus on the people they're affecting," Speaks said. Workers like her husband and his colleagues "are out there risking their lives," she added, "and they're not getting paid. It's not fair."

Breaking News Today - Trevor Noah unearths Trump's old advice about dealing with walls - Duration: 4:09.

As the US federal government shutdown over Trump funding his border wall with Mexico continues, a newly unearthed video shows him having a slightly different view on the efficiency of such barriers 15 years ago

President Donald Trump is demanding $5.7billion for a wall along the US-Mexico border, claiming this is the only way to prevent illegal immigration

However, in a 2004 speech to college graduates, he urged them: 'If there's a concrete wall in front of you, go through it, go over it, go around it, but get to the other side of that wall

Trump made the speech while accepting an honorary doctorate at Wagner College on New York's Staten Island in May 2004

'Never ever give up,' he can be heard telling graduates in the video.'Don't give up

Don't allow it to happen.'If there's a concrete wall in front of you, go through it, go over it, go around it, but get to the other side of that wall

' The footage was dug up and broadcast by comedian Trevor Noah during Wednesday night's Daily Show

'If there's one thing we know, it's that nothing will stop immigrants from trying to come to America,' Noah said

'This is a place that people dream of coming to, because people trying to make a better, safer life for their families will do anything to achieve that dream

And I know Donald Trump understands this — because of this video we found from 15 years ago

' Presently, the federal government is entering its 20th day of partial shutdown, and Trump is heading to Texas to visit the border town of McAllen

The partial government shutdown has left hundreds of thousands of Americans out of work or working without pay, while Trump and his fellow Republicans fight with Democrats over his demand for $5

7billion this year to construct the barrier.Trump's plan to build a wall at the southern border was a central promise of his 2016 presidential campaign

He said last month he would be 'proud' to shut the government down over the issue

He has also been considering whether to declare a national emergency and use it to go around Congress by spending money allocated for the Department of Defense to build the wall

Democrats who control the House of Representatives refuse to approve the wall funding

Robert Mueller Secretly Interviewed Trump's Campaign Pollster - Duration: 1:53.

-Well, you guys, I heard that the Academy Awards

are planning to move forward without a host.

Yeah, sounds crazy until you remember

that America's been moving forward without a government.

And so it's doable.

[ Applause ]

Well, it just came out that last year,

Robert Mueller secretly interviewed

one of Trump's campaign pollsters, Tony Fabrizio.

Which is impressive,

'cause usually when you have a secret meeting

with a guy named Tony Fabrizio, you don't come back.

[ Laughter, applause ]

"Jimmy, oh.

Talk to my friend Tony Fabrizio, all right?

Forget about it." Stop doing that to my hand.

"Just take a little something for you."

Stop doing that to my hand.

"This is for you. All right?

It's like Tony Febrezio.

Febreze, you never smelled anything.

Nothing ever happened. No, no, no."

I saw that next month,

Trump's longtime lawyer Michael Cohen

is going to testify publicly in Congress.

Trump heard that, and he was like,

"While you're there, can you ask if you can borrow $5.7 billion?

Just while you're there. Just -- Thank you.

Will you be a lamb?

[ Laughter ]

Just be a lamb and ask for $5 billion."

Check this out -- Disneyland is raising its prices,

and the cheapest ticket will be over $100.

[ Audience groans ]

They know it's kind of shocking,

which is why they take your picture

the moment you find out the price.

Then they sell that to you for 500 bucks.

-$500? Wow.

-"And this is when me and the missus

found out it was going to be --"

But get this -- A gas shortage in Mexico

could mean that avocados aren't delivered to the U.S.

before Super Bowl Sunday.

[ Audience groans ]

It's the first time gas will affect Mexican food

and not the other way around.

[ Laughter ] Yeah.

Thank you.

FBI UNDER FIRE!! DONALD TRUMP DROPS MASSIVE B0MB ON THE FBI - Duration: 13:47.

FBI UNDER FIRE!!

DONALD TRUMP DROPS MASSIVE B0MB ON THE FBI

let's talk about something that Democrats will also find very

interesting and fun I'm sure is this New York Times report that the FBI opened an investigation

to our president because they thought he was either knowingly or potentially

unwittingly being a tool for the Russians it says in the days after

president from fire James B Comey is FBI director law enforcement officials became so concerned

by the president's behavior that they began investigating whether

he had been working on behalf of Russia against American interests mark I

mean it just goes to show that the dirty dossier fueled all of this witch-hunt which continues

on today and you know I spent the first dozen years out of college

in the media and one of my first news directors taught me that the first

three letters of news spell knew there's nothing new here we've known the FBI has been out

at least some of the top levels of the FBI we're out to get the president

they disagreed with the outcome of the election and they were

going to use the power of their investigate their investigation powers to go get them

and it's very simple it's still a it's the investigation of a man in

search of a crime well Doug you know of course there are many people

associated with the institution the DOJ the FBI who say that's not the case although it's

still being investigated by the house I'm sure they're gonna drop that

investigation now because now they're setting their sights on the

president but I want to play a read a little bit of Rudy Giuliani obviously the president's

attorney his response to this New York Times story he says the fact

that it goes back a year and a half and nothing came of it that showed a breach

of national security means they found nothing so Doug is this much ado about nothing you

know I don't think we know Shannon I would love for mr.

Muller to investigate what the FBI was doing at a time when they

were in turmoil we know that and I really think that there are so many

questions raised by The Times report best not to rush to judgment best to try to investigate

and explore and learn really what was happening it's hard to believe

that the president United States duly elected was an agent of Russia or

under their influence but let's see why the FBI did what they did at a time when we all

know they were in chaos Finn's final war do that now is the

time for the Attorney General of the United States to make sure that there is an investigation

that's done into this because if the whole idea is that the

that confidence and the integrity of the FBI is being undermined that needs to be fleshed

out we need a real investigation into the FBI how all of this happened and

why they were beholden to political opposition research that so far has

yielded next to nothing by way of truth this is unacceptable and if you want to restore

confidence in the FBI investigate it make the results public and

reveal to the American public that you either fix the sin or there was

nothing wrong in the first place well the AG is the nominee is going to be you know

his hearing on the hill this week will be public and we'll see if they

get into that as part of the questioning power panel thank you all

here and abroad Doug good to have you with us thank you in the meantime we've got the

Senate Republican Judiciary Committee member Lindsey Graham here I'm telling

you senator it is odd I mean markets of more uncertainty but now we

obviously you had to get the the the mother office to clarify and state its case against

Flynn that they didn't force him into lying he just lied and that

did seem to rattle folks what do you think well number one this was all

post-election intrigue I don't know why is there crime to talk to the Russians when you're

in transition I guess it's a crime to lie about talking to the Russians

when you're in the transition from one administration to the next so

if you're looking for the big picture no evidence of collusion by the Trump campaign during

the campaign with anything Russia thus far and if they'd had

it Flynn would have known about it they were to charged him with it so if

I'm the Trump people I'm thinking this is all process stuff all right so a lot of the

stuff that goes against this is whether Flynn at the time of getting ready

become national security adviser was misrepresenting himself you're

arguing that even if he did or even if he lied or even if people forced him to lies

he said which seems to be repudiated by the Muller folks the fact of

the matter was the election was done it was settled and yeah that's got

nothing isn't like well the whole purpose of Muller being around find out that the Trump

campaign get an advantage from colluding with the Russians

from stolen emails from the DNC and Podesta the answer thus far is no

but the one thing that jumps out at me is that they phoned in the Clinton investigation

they were in the tank for her the hated Trump they liked her they wanted

an insurance policy and the same folks that were in the tank for Clinton

are the ones on the trail of Flynn and all the Trump folks there's a certain unevenness

hear about how you investigate campaign you certainly might be

right about that potential Bob one of the things that we learned from Bob

Muller on the Michael Flynn thing is that nothing about the way the interview was arranged

or conducted calls the defendant again Michael Flynn to make false

statements to the FBI a mother goes on to state and clarify

that the seriousness of Flynn's offense cannot be called into question well here's what I

call into question the tactics they did a sit-down interview with

Hillary Clinton unrecorded right they never flipped anybody in the

Clinton investigation to try to find out what happened with the Clinton Foundation in uranium

one there was no effort to squeeze anybody as a matter of fact

everybody got kid-glove treatment now when you look at

everything Trump Flynn included it was a real all hands on deck whatever we need to do to

find out what happened confidential informants counterintelligence

investigations and not a finger lifting you've got the

right we don't know the details of that or whether they did handle one case very differently

than the other they did handle one quit there is a double standard

but do you think that when it comes to this the president is

misrepresented this and Michael Cohen's cases are talking to George Stephanopoulos earlier

today he said that the president isn't telling the truth

that the president knew about these hush money payments to these women

and so now we're flipping from Russia the campaign finance but but but the underlying

theme being misrepresentation but actually lying okay so the underlying

theme of the Muller investigation is were there any of

by the Trump campaign to work with the Russians to change the outcome of the election thus

far no when it comes to campaign finance law violations you have Cohen

you'll have stormy Daniels a play more play more Playboy

model and avenatti against Trump now be my guest if that's where you want to go I never

you know advocate violating the law but from Trump's point of view he's done

non-disclosure agreements before to protect his family and his brand so I

think that's what he did here there's I don't know but I know this ain't got a damn thing

to do with Russia and I'm not saying I'm not excusing it but we're talking

about sex we're talking about stormy Daniels Mac Michael avenatti and

a Playboy bunny as your chief witnesses now if you want to make that the centerpiece of

2019 be my guest all right so help me with this senator one

of the things that's come up in Rudy Giuliani the present lawyer had said he

insists that he did not say when he was earlier reported to have said that hush money payments

aren't a big deal but if Donald Trump did initiate or did tell Michael

Cohen to write those checks would that be a big deal to you well

it'd be a campaign finance violation in theory campaign finance violations have never been

used to impeach anybody Obama failed to report eight million dollars worth

of contributions and he got a fine so I'm just saying what's the big deal

to me did Trump collude with the Russians and if he didn't I'll put everything else

in perspective if you want to impeach the president over the stormy

Daniels thing you can if you choose to we tried this with Clinton it

started out with some bad business deals sexual harassment lawsuits are always about sex you

don't want the most important person in the world the president

undermining the legal system that's what it was about to me if you

think that this is worthy of impeachment in the house go ahead I think most Americans

probably won't agree with you all right so just to put a bow on this for

now because we have other things I do want to talk about the so often

China situation Saudi Arabia something you're doing but much is made about whether if you

do approve of payments like this and you are running for president

states and you time it in the middle of an election year whether

they're campaign funds or not I'm not a lawyer I don't know if you well they swore yeah all

right so all right so I defer to your legal expertise that that is

a very slippery slope if the president knew well all I can say there

weren't campaign funds they tried this with John Edwards he had a mistress she had a child

she got money they saying you're using money from the campaign to silence

her to benefit your campaign and went to trial hung jury and acquittal

this is Trump's own money to pay somebody making a claim he denies he has done this

in the past famous people find themselves in this box all the time I don't

think the different it's here I guess that Canada he's a Kennedy my

absolutely he's seen as maybe trying to influence the other you gotta prove beyond a reasonable

doubt under campaign finance law that the only reason the payment

was made was to benefit the campaign if there's some alternative

reason then you'll have a hard time proving that case but if they want to do this they

can it's still a campaign finance violation doesn't have a damn thing

to do with Russia all right do you believe everything the president has

said on these subjects no no you know he's he's always under siege you know he's seeing

this one minute and that the next is what he does that matters

he's like every other person you know Bill Clinton lied about

having sexual relationships with that woman I voted against that article of impeachment

because I think most people blindsided would lie to protect their family

I'm the one Republican that voted against that article of impeachment

because I think the average person in that circumstance would be compelled to lie did

Trump do some of this I don't know but if he did I can at least understand

I think you were famous of the time for saying I have a different

definition of high crimes and misdemeanors or something yeah lied about sex wouldn't

enough then for me and it's not enough now you'll party with

the President on this but more on the Saudi Arabia suggestion

that his response has been poor you had an effort in the Senate to say we've got to stop

our support of the Saudis in this war in Yemen tens of thousands have gotten

killed the president has said he's still waiting to

get more proof that the Saudi prince was behind the killing of Jamal Khashoggi you have no

doubt I don't know what happened with stormy Daniels but I know what

happened with NBS those 15 people left Saudi Arabia did so under the

command in the direction of NBS who'd been focusing on kosugi as a critic for two years

he's renditioned people he's taking people from other countries Saudi citizens

brought them back to Saudi Arabia to abuse them this is a pattern

for him he did it he knew about it couldn't happen without his knowledge I'm not going

to forgive it big deal we need to come down hard because if we don't

were opening up Pandora's box so when the president doesn't move on this

and and he is stood by the Saudi prince and then you hear yesterday the Saudis want to

curtail oil production regardless of whether there's a glut of the

market right and they obviously want to loop the price it could lift the

price on us but that's a heck of a thank you to the president is trying to stand by number

one they're gonna sell all or they will starve they're going to do what's

best for the Saudi economy which is all based weapons I'm worried that

this guy is crazy enough to kill a journalist in a consulate in Turkey why would you give

that guy weapons that he may give to the Russians or the Chinese as

long as NBS is around I'm not gonna deal with Saudi Arabia as a normal

relationship because there's nothing normal about him so you wouldn't even do it on anything

we know we need they need us a thousand times more than we need them

they would be speaking Farsi and used to the president yeah and I'm not

telling it to what is he said well he said he's the president I just got to think about

these things differently the Congress took Bush on about detainee policy

and we came up with its any treatment at Obama didn't want to do

anything against the Iranian regime but we went ahead and sanctioned the run every now

and then Congress goes its own way I like the president he's right about

the strategic relationship being important I think he's wrong to believe that MBS we

can ignore what he did it undercuts the relationship it sounds like you will

not do that who the president the Congress will what we're going to do is we're going

to stop sales to Saudi Arabia of equipment until something changes

until the people held accountable for killing this man

or actually held accountable all right let me switch gears very quickly on the whole

impasse over the wall if I'd been put well you would said referring to Democrats

that they want Trump to lose more than the USA to win would you

Senator Lindsey Graham then be okay to force the shutdown if that five billion wasn't native

I am more than okay for the president to make a reasonable request

of the Congress and stick to his guns he ran on securing our border the

Democrats all voted forty four of them did in February of 2018 this year for twenty five

billion dollars for the wall as part of a larger deal now they won't give

him five billion that could be well-spent
