- How polarizing is Donald Trump?

When you think of politically divisive presidents

Richard Nixon may come to mind,

or maybe George W. Bush or Barack Obama.

But no president in the modern polling era,

dating back to the 1950s,

has had a larger partisan gap in his job approval ratings

than Donald Trump.

The approval gap is one measure

how politically divided Americans are,

but it's not the only one.

And the public's growing partisan polarization

was evident long before Trump took office.

Flashback to the mid-1990s when Bill Clinton was president.

Republicans and Democrats disagreed over many things,

including healthcare and foreign policy,

but on average, opinion differences

between Republicans and Democrats

were no larger than differences between men and women,

blacks and whites, or those of other groups.

Today, the partisan gap dwarfs any of these other measures,

and it's more than doubled since 1994.

Look at the trajectory of attitudes

on just a single issue: immigration.

Republicans and Democrats used to feel similarly

about the impact of immigrants.

The dominant view in both parties was that

immigrants did more to burden than strengthen the country.

But today, partisans are far apart.

The vast majority of Democrats

say immigrants do more to strengthen the country,

while Republicans remain skeptical about the contributions

immigrants make to the U.S.

Partisan polarization encompasses

more than just disagreements

over policies and political values.

Think for a minute: what type of community

would you prefer to live in?

Republicans express a strong preference

for big houses and widely spaced, drivable communities.

Democrats for the most part say they want a smaller house

closer to amenities such as schools,

stores and restaurants.

Differences between Republicans and Democrats

now extend to issues which you may not expect

to be all that partisan,

like views of the national economy.

Throughout the 1990s there wasn't much difference

in how Republicans and Democrats rated economic conditions,

but since the early 2000s - and especially today -

the economy is viewed through a partisan lens.

We should keep this history in mind

when thinking about Trump's presidency

since we've been polarized for a while.

But Trump may have distilled our differences even further.

While debates over issues

from taxes to immigration continue,

one of the most powerful expressions

of the nation's deep political divisions today

is the public's opinion of one man - Donald Trump.

Donald Trump 'berated Theresa May in Air Force One phone call' - Duration: 2:38.

Donald Trump reportedly berated Theresa May in a phone call while he was on Air Force One

The prime minster called the US president to congratulate him on the results of the US midterm elections last week, the Washington Post reported

Mr Trump was on his way to Paris for events marking the centenary of  the end of the First World War

According to the report Mr Trump berated Mrs May, saying she had not been doing enough to rein in Iran

He was also said to have questioned her over Brexit, and to have complained that US trade deals with European nations were unfair

Mrs May's aides were said to have been taken aback by the president's tone, the Washington Post reported, citing officials briefed about the call

Downing Street has yet to comment on the report. After he arrived in Paris, Mr Trump faced criticism for cancelling a scheduled visit to a US military cemetery because of bad weather

Mrs May's relationship with Mr Trump has been a rocky one. She was the first foreign leader to visit Mr Trump at the White House after he became president, but people close to Mr Trump suggested there was a lack of "chemistry" between the leaders

On his visit to the UK in July Mr Trump embarrassed Mrs May, attacking her handling of Brexit in a newspaper interview, and saying "she didn't listen to me"

However, he went on to apologise and lavish her with praise.

Trump Administration Stands Behind Jim Acosta Suspension, Fox News Supports CNN | THR News - Duration: 2:50.

The Trump Administration is standing behind its decision to strip CNN reporter Jim

Acosta of the hard badge that allows him regular access to the White House.

On Tuesday, CNN sued President Donald Trump along with Press Secretary Sarah

Huckabee Sanders and General John Kelly, among others, alleging that the

suspension of Acosta's press pass violates the First and Fifth Amendments.

Meanwhile, the government has filed court papers in opposition to Acosta's bid to

have his badge restored. In its complaint, CNN recounts what happened last

Wednesday's press conference when Acosta repeatedly asked questions - much to

Trump's chagrin. The reporter subsequently had his his badge revoked in what

long-time White House correspondents say was an unprecedented move. The initial

explanation from the White House was that Acosta's badge was revoked because he

was being disrespectful, but more recently, Trump's staff indicated it wouldn't tolerate

how he continued to ask questions even upon the demand that he give up

the microphone. However, CNN isn't convinced, telling a judge in the complaint that

the punishment "is the culmination of years of hostility by President Trump against

CNN and Acosta based on the contents of their reporting — an unabashed attempt

to censor the press and exclude reporters from the White House who challenge

and dispute the President's point of view." The White House is pushing back on this

claim with a brief filed by The Trump Administration reading, in part,

Acosta argues that the hard pass suspension puts his livelihood as a

professional reporter at stake while Trump's legal team downplays the harm.

The case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge Timothy J. Kelly, a Trump

appointee who will hear CNN's motion for a temporary restraining order this afternoon.

Should Judge Kelly grant the TRO and restore Acosta's badge, the defendants say

it would be

Meanwhile, rival network Fox News will file an amicus brief in support of CNN's

lawsuit against the White House with network president Jay Wallace saying in a statement,

There IS a fascist threat, but it's not from Trump - Duration: 1:56.

D'Souza: If you look up fascism, the economic part of it,

it basically says, "state-run capitalism, state-directed capitalism."

That's the meaning of fascism. Now here's the interesting thing:

we often accuse the Left of being socialist, but in reality,

these guys aren't socialists, because what does socialist countries do?

Socialist countries nationalize industries. The government takes over

the energy industry. The government takes over the banks.

Notice under Obamacare, we still have private insurance companies.

We still have private hospitals. But the government is directing them.

The government's fixing the price. The government's telling them what to do.

Under Obama, we saw an expansion of government direction and control

over, not just the health sector, but banks, insurance companies,

energy companies, increasingly the education sector. That's why

Bernie and Hillary wanted free college. Their idea was the government now

gets to direct even private colleges in telling them what to do.

So my point is this is not socialism. If it were socialism, the government

would have taken over all this stuff. This is actually fascism.

State-directed capitalism, that's what fascism means, and in that respect,

fascism is with us now.

D'Souza: Lincoln was elected to unite a country and stop slavery.

Democrats smeared him, went to war against him,

assassinated him. Now their target is Trump.

[Crowd chanting]

[Crowd chanting] D'Souza: They say he's a racist,

a fascist. But who are the real racists and facists?

A nation does when its people are not free.

It's now up to us to save America a second time.

-Okay, then how's your penis?

-Pretty nasty to be honest with you.

-Well, looks like we're out of time.
