Trump news on Youtube Nov 13 2018

Washington is reportedly preparing for the second summit between President Donald Trump

and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

This is according to Reuters on Tuesday, citing the U.S. National Security Advisor.

John Bolton is now in Singapore for the ASEAN summit... but he did not specify when or where

the next Kim-Trump meeting would take place.

Bolton's remark comes just a day after the Center for Strategic and International Studies

had identified at least 13 out of 20 of North Korea's undeclared missile bases.

Trump VS Clinton and TV ads - don't be patronising (Studio Sessions Episode 7 Part 2) - Duration: 4:43.

So what does it mean for the European elections?

There is a pretty good example in the U.S. with the Trump-Clinton campaign,

and I will also quickly cover the Brexit campaign.

And the difference is between talking to everyone, like a TV spot,

a commercial on TV would try to do,

addressing millions of people at the same time.

Or there is what we call advertising micro-targeting.

When your passing a specific message, particularly on Facebook, LinkedIn, or Twitter,

to a very small fraction of the audience.

People you know will resonate with your message and really receive it well.

What happens is that the Clinton campaign massively invested in TV commercials.

So they put TV commercials in front of millions of people.

And in order to do that, you don't have a lot of leeway to produce a lot of commercials.

You need to restrict the number of passage of your commercial.

And the problem with that is that you tend to say the same thing to people who are very different.

Let's take a look for 30 seconds at that particular commercial.

*Music: Katy Perry - Roar*

So in this particular commercial spot, what do we see?

That there are at least 30 different types of people.

And they are all mixed together in this idea that America talks to everyone in the same

way, you have the same chances.

The problem with that is that if you have a frustration because you're a little bit

poorer or because you are richer and you actually pay too much in taxes, what do you think about

one spot that addresses everyone?

You're thinking, OK, Clinton is trying to tell me and other people one single message.

Because it's easier for her to mix everything at the same time.

What Trump did is spend 100 million dollars on Facebook advertising.

Which means targeting, micro-targeting, people only on the things they like.

If you like weapons, you would have advertising talking about

Trump and his appreciate of weapons.

If you're someone who is an underprivileged city 'banlieue', what would happen?

You would have a specific type of message telling you how successful you can be if Trump

actually goes on to the presidency.

And how hard he will work to give you the same chances that he had as a businessman.

Whether it's true or not, at least this resonates with your actual situation.

You have to understand that 100 million dollars

of micro-targeting advertising is a massive, massive budget.

And some of the advertising on Facebook had about 50 thousand variations on the title,

the image, and the description.

Which means that they were always optimising to reach the right people at the right time.

When we're talking about Cambridge Analytica or about fake news, I don't think they had

a great impact on the actual success of Trump.

But 100 million U.S. dollars on micro-targeting, that has a massive impact.

Brexit brought the exact same logic.

In this case, I took generic advertising during Brexit from "Vote Leave", targeting only nurses

working in the NHS hospitals.

So obviously in this particular case, that resonates a lot more with them

than for anyone in the general public.

So we're trying to get their vote and only their vote.

This video is part of a series on communication in the public sector.

Do not hesitate to comment to let us know what you think at what are your own challenges.

We'll try to answer all your questions, because that's what a community is for.

Hope you enjoy it and see you for the next episode.

THIS IS A SUPERB BOOK.

IT IS AN INTERESTING SUBJECT,

VERY RELEVANT.

WHAT LED YOU TO WRITE THIS BOOK

NIGHT OF THE ELECTION, WATCHING

TRUMP, WHO HAD BEEN ELECTED

PRESIDENT, WALK ON THE STAGE,

TRAILED BY A FOLLOWING OF

GAZELLE-LIKE WOMEN ON FOUR-INCH

HEELS.

ALL OF THEM LOOKING SIMILAR,

BEAUTIFULLY IRONED HAIR,

MODEL, CAMERA-READY FACES, SHORT

I THOUGHT -- WHO ARE THESE

WOMEN?

WHAT WOULD MAKE THEM

STICK WITH THIS MAN WHO HAD BEEN

ACCUSED BY 19 WOMEN OF

AGGRESSIVE ACTS?

FURTHERMORE, THE ABRUPT CHANGE

WITHIN ONE HOUR OF AMERICAN

WOMEN EXPECTING, MANY EXPECTING

TO HAVE, AS THEIR EMISSARY TO

THE WORLD AND LEADER OF THIS

FEMALE PRESIDENT.

AND, WITHIN AN HOUR, THAT HAD

SWITCHED TO KNOW, THE PUBLIC

THE BRANDED TRUMP FEMALE, THESE

OF THE TRUMPIAN VISION OF THE

THOSE ARE NOW OUR ROLE MODELS

>> BEFORE WE GET TO HIS WIVES,

PERHAPS WE COULD START WITH THE

ELDEST EVIDENCE OF A WOMAN IN

HIS LIFE, HIS GRANDMOTHER.

WHAT DID YOUR RESEARCH UNCOVER

ABOUT ELIZABETH?

>> FASCINATING STORY.

A LOT OF THE RESEARCH INTO

ELIZABETH CHRIS TRUMP COMES FROM

A BIOGRAPHY.

THE SOURCES ON HER, IN THE TOWN

IN GERMANY WHERE THE TRUMPS ARE

FROM, ARE PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT

AROUND ANYMORE.

ELIZABETH CHRIS TRUMP WAS THE

GIRL NEXT-DOOR GROWING UP WHEN

FREDERICK TRUMP, TRUMP'S

GRANDFATHER LEFT THIS TINY TOWN

IN GERMANY TO COME TO THE UNITED

STATES BY HIMSELF TO MAKE HIS

FORTUNE RUNNING SALOON BROTHELS

AROUND THE GOLD RUSH AREA IN

SEATTLE AND THEN IN THE YUKON.

HE MARRIED THE GIRL NEXT DOOR,

THIS CHINA DOLL BEAUTY,

BLUE-EYED, BLOND HAIR.

YOU SEE HER IN TIFFANY, IVANKA,

AND ERIC.

SHE MARRIES FREDERICK.

SUDDENLY SHE IS IN

IMMIGRANT-FILLED NEW YORK.

SHE HAS THREE CHILDREN.

SHE WANTS TO GO HOME.

SHE HAS TRIED TO GO HOME THREE

OR FOUR TIMES, TO GERMANY.

WHEN HE WAS MAKING HIS

--, HE EVADED MILITARY

SERVICE.

THEY WOULD NOT LET HIM COME

BACK.

SHE WAS STUCK HERE.

FREDERICK DIES OF THE SPANISH

FLU.

SHE IS LEFT HERE ALL ALONE.

SHE IS GERMAN-SPEAKING.

AFTER WORLD WAR I, GERMANS WERE

NOT WELL-LIKED.

SHE HAS PROPERTY IN QUEENS.

SHE INCORPORATED THE TRUMP

COMPANY AND STARTED THE

BOROUGH BUILD MODE OF

DEVELOPMENT THAT BECAME THE

BASIS OF THE TRUMP ORGANIZATION.

>> DONALD TRUMP DISPUTES THAT.

>> HE DOES NOT DISPUTE IT.

I DO NOT THINK HE WAS

CHALLENGED, BUT HE GIVES ALL

CREDIT TO HIS FATHER, FREDERICK.

FREDERICK WAS 13 WHEN SHE

INCORPORATED.

THERE IS NO WAY THAT CONCEPT

CAME FROM THE MIND OF A

13-YEAR-OLD.

AS SOON AS HE WAS OUT OF HIGH

SCHOOL, HE WENT STRAIGHT TO

WORK.

FRED TRUMP WAS AN INDUSTRIOUS

AND THRIFTY MAN.

HE WAS AN INDUSTRIOUS YOUNG MAN.

HE WENT OUT AND STARTED BUILDING

THESE HOUSES AFTER SHE

STARTED THE COMPANY.

>> THEN YOU HAVE HIS MOTHER,

MARY, QUEEN OF SCOTS.

>> MARY MACLEOD CAME FROM A

TINY ISLAND.

AROUND THE TURN-OF-THE-CENTURY,

SHE WAS THE 10TH CHILD OF A

FISHERMAN'S FAMILY, LIVING IN A

TWO-BEDROOM PEAT HEATED

COTTAGE.

THERE WERE NOT A LOT OF MEN ON

THE ISLAND.

A NUMBER OF MEN DIED IN A

SHIPWRECK OFF THE COAST AFTER

COMING BACK FROM THE WAR.

THESE GIRLS, GROWING UP, THERE

WAS A SHORTAGE OF HUSBAND

MATERIAL.

SHE CAME TO THE UNITED STATES, A

PLACE WHERE SCOTS WERE BEING

HIRED AS FOOTMEN AND NANNIES AND

BUTLERS IN THE GREAT HOUSES OF

NEW YORK.

I COULD NOT BELIEVE, WHEN I WENT

TO THE LIBRARY AND LOOKED IN

THE CENSUS TO FIND OUT WHERE

SHE LIVED, SHE MOVED INTO THE

CARNEGIE MANSION.

SHE WAS A MAID.

SHE WAS POLISHING BANISTERS,

POLISHING SILVER.

THAT EXPERIENCE, I BELIEVE,

TURNED HER INTO A PERSON WHO WAS

OBSESSED WITH THE ROYAL,

OBSESSED WITH

TRAPPINGS OF ROYALTY.

>> STATUS.

>> STATUS, THAT IS WHERE SHE

GOT THE OBSESSION WITH WATCHING

QUEEN ELIZABETH.

COMPLETELY DIFFERENT FROM FRED

TRUMP.

SHE HAD AN INTEREST IN APTITUDE

AND YEARNING FOR THE TRAPPINGS

OF WEALTH AND LUXURY, AND THAT

IS DONALD TRUMP'S ROSEBUD.

HIS CRAVING FOR LUXURY AND

CLASS.

THAT IS WHY YOU HAVE, EVERY TIME

HIS NAME IS ON A BUILDING.

HIS CLAIMS THE TRUMP NAME EQUALS

LUXURY.

YOU SEE IVANKA SAYING IT IN HER

BOOK.

THEY BELIEVE THE NAME IS

EQUIVALENT WITH LUXURY AND THAT

COMES FROM THE GRANDMOTHER.

>> THIS IS HARDLY A MAN

WHO TRACES HIS ANCESTRY BACK

TO THE MAYFLOWER PILGRIM.

>> YOU HAVE HIS DAUGHTER

SAYING THEY ARE AMERICA'S

ROYAL FAMILY AND THEY

BELIEVE THAT.

>> TRUMP HAS A GRANDMOTHER, HE

GROWS UP, IT COMES TIME FOR A

MAN TO LEAVE HIS FATHER AND TAKE

A WIFE.

WHO IS HIS FIRST WIFE?

>> IVANA.

>> SHE IS THE CZECH.

SKI CHAMPION.

>> TWO OF HIS WIVES ARE JAMES

AND SHE THOUGHT HE WAS THE BEE'S

THE VERY BEST AMERICAN MANHOOD

HAD TO OFFER.

HE PURSUED HER FOR A YEAR AND

SHE FINALLY SAID YES AND THEY

GOT MARRIED ON THE UPPER

EASTSIDE AT AN EVENT FILLED WITH

FRED TRUMP'S POLITICAL

ASSOCIATES.

SHE HAD MAYBE THREE OF HER OWN

FRIENDS THERE.

SHE MARRIES INTO THIS FAMILY AND

SOMETHING IMPORTANT HAS TO

HAPPEN.

THAT IS CALLED A PRENUP.

THE INFAMOUS MOB LAWYER.

AN INFAMOUS FIGURE IN NEW YORK

POLITICAL HISTORY.

HE ADVISES TRUMP -- HE SAYS, DO

NOT GET MARRIED, THAT IS NOT A

GOOD IDEA.

HE WAS CLOSETED GAY AND PROBABLY

IN LOVE WITH DONALD ANYWAY.

HE SAID DO NOT GET MARRIED, BUT

IF YOU ARE GOING TO GET MARRIED,

YOU NEED A CONTRACT.

IT ALMOST CAPSIZED THE PLANS.

SHE DID NOT LIKE WHAT THEY WERE

ASKING HER TO SIGN.

SHE WAS ABLE TO FIGHT BACK AND

GET MAD MONEY WRITTEN INTO IT.

THE ORIGINAL DEAL WAS,

SHE HAD TO GIVE ALL OF HIS GIFTS

BACK.

>> $25,000?

>> IT WAS A VERY LOW AMOUNT.

>> DO YOU KNOW WHAT HER

ANSWER WAS WHEN SHE OBJECTED

>> I DO NOT REMEMBER.

>> HE SAID YOU KNOW ROY COHN.

I DON'T LIKE IT, BUT THIS IS

WHAT --

>> HE MADE HER HIS INTERIOR

DESIGNER.

HE PUT HER ON WITH THESE

BUILDINGS.

EVENTUALLY, SHE TURNED OUT TO BE

A VERY GOOD MANAGER OF

EMPLOYEES.

SHE DESIGNED THE PLAZA HOTEL.

SHE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE LOOK

OF THE LOBBY IN TRUMP TOWER.

HE PUT HER IN CHARGE OF THE

CASINOS IN ATLANTIC CITY.

HE PUT HER IN CHARGE OF THE

PLAZA.

BY THAT TIME, SHE WAS STARTING

TO GET CREDIT FOR BEING THE

WOMAN BEHIND THE COMPANY.

SHE WAS SO SUCCESSFUL AND GOOD

AT GETTING PRESS.

THE PRESS -- OBSESSED WITH

THIS PAIR BECAUSE THEY WERE OVER

THE TOP.

HE BOUGHT MAR-A-LAGO AT THIS

POINT AND HE HAD HIS YACHT.

SHE WAS A YUPPIE WIFE, HIS

CAREER WOMAN WIFE, AND HE DID

NOT LIKE HEADLINES ABOUT HOW

GOOD SHE WAS AT HER JOB.

THAT WAS THE BEGINNING OF THE

END.

IT COLLAPSED BECAUSE HE FOUND

SOMEONE MORE PLIANT.

HE HAD MANY MISTRESSES.

MARLA MAPLES REALLY HUNG ON.

CAPSIZED.

VERY DEMANDING MISTRESS, WHO HE

IS HAVING TO HIDE.

HE OPENS THE RELATIONSHIP TO THE

Michelle Obama Admits She 'Stopped Even Trying to Smile' During Donald Trump's Inauguration - News t - Duration: 4:23.

Former First Lady Michelle Obama has revealed that she couldn't hide her unhappiness on President Donald Trump's inauguration day — nor did she even try

In a self-narrated audio version of her memoir Becoming that was played during the former first lady's Sunday interview with ABC News' Robin Roberts, Mrs

Obama lamented the fact that with Trump's inauguration, "the vibrant diversity of the two previous inaugurations was gone

Get push notifications with news, features, and more. Follow Following You'll get the latest updates on this topic in your browser notifications

"Someone from Barack's administration might have said that the optics there were bad," she continued

"That what the public saw didn't reflect the president's reality or ideals. But in this case, maybe it did

Realizing it, I made my own optic adjustment. I stopped even trying to smile."  In the interview, Roberts asked Mrs

Obama, "What goes through your mind when you read and hear all that's going on right now with this administration?"  "I said what I continue to say

Being the commander-in-chief is a hard job. You need to have discipline, and you need to read, and you need to be knowledgeable

You need to know history. You need to be careful with your words," Mrs. Obama replied

"But voters make those decisions, and once the voters have spoken, we live with what we live with

"  In January, Mrs. Obama discussed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show the awkward moment on inauguration day when First Lady Melania Trump handed her a gift

"There's all this protocol," Mrs. Obama recalled. "I mean, this is like a state visit, so they tell you that you're going to do this, they're going to stand here

Never before do you get this gift, so I'm sort of like, 'Okay, what am I supposed to do with this gift?' "  "Everyone cleared out, and no one would come and take the box

And I'm thinking, 'Do we take the picture [with the box]?' " she said. "And then my husband saved the day — see he grabbed the box and took it back inside

But everybody cleared out. No staff, no one. I was like, 'What do you do with the box?' "  In Becoming, Mrs

Obama criticized Trump for falsely claiming that former President Barack Obama was not born in America

She wrote that she will "never forgive" Trump for putting her daughters, Sasha and Malia, in danger by spreading the lie about her husband

She also called Trump's birther movement "crazy and mean-spirited" with "underlying bigotry and xenophobia hardly concealed," according to ABC News

On Friday, Trump responded to Mrs. Obama's statement with critiques of his own

"She got paid a lot of money to write a book and they always expect a little controversy," he told reporters

"I'll never forgive [President Obama] for what he did to our United States by not funding it properly

It was depleted. It was old and tired, and I came in and I had to fix it, and I'm in the process of spending tremendous amounts of money, so I'll never forgive him for what he did to our military," Trump added

French Army mock Trump for missing memorial service - Daily News - Duration: 3:06.

The French army poked fun at the President of the United States after he missed a memorial service marking the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I

The army took the time on Monday to say how they were unaffected by rain using a picture of its soldiers crawling under barbed wire in heavy rain with the hashtag #MondayMotivation

Taking a light-hearted dig at the president, the tweet ridiculed his failure to attend the memorial service in France which saw French President Emmanuel Macron and other world leaders pay their respects

A translation of the tweet reads: 'There is rain, but it does not matter. We remain motivated

'Trump drew widespread criticism over the weekend for not attending a scheduled wreath-laying event at the Ainse-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial in Belleau, France

Share this article Share The cemetery contains nearly 2,300 graves for soldiers who fought in the surrounding areas in 1918

Amid the increasing criticism, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders noted that the weather had caused visibility issues and the trip was 'canceled due to scheduling and logistical difficulties caused by the weather'

She later added that the presidential motorcade would have disrupted Paris's traffic and added: 'President Trump did not want to cause that kind of unexpected disruption to the city and its people

'  Canadian President Justin Trudeau made reference to the rain in his memorial speech saying: 'As we sit here in the rain, thinking how uncomfortable we must be these minutes as our suits get wet and our hair gets wet and our shoes get wet, I think it's all the more fitting that we remember on that day, in Dieppe, the rain wasn't rain, it was bullets

'Former presidential staffers and politicians also shared their disbelief at the president's cancellation to the service

British defence minister Tobias Ellwood, wrote on Twitter: 'As a duel National I'm sorry to read this

'Rain was a regular feature on the Western Front. Thankfully it did not prevent our brave heroes from doing their job

' Ben Rhodes, deputy national security adviser under Barack Obama wrote on Twitter: 'I helped plan all of President Obama's trips for 8 years

There is always a rain option. Always.'

So Much News, So Little Time - Whitaker, California Fires & Trump's WWI Rain Check | The Daily Show - Duration: 5:51.

Let's just say it.

This last week has not been a good one for the president.

Hell, the last two years hasn't been

a good one for the president.

Trump's presidency's a lot like airplane Wi-Fi.

There are moments when it seems to be working,

but most of the time it's complete trash.

But this week has been especially bad.

It started on Wednesday, when Trump replaced his house elf

with the Republican Vin Diesel, Matt Whitaker.

Now, the move caused immediate backlash from people

who say Whitaker isn't qualified to be attorney general.

He's biased against the Mueller investigation,

and his appointment may even be unconstitutional.

And the controversy has forced Trump

into one of his most blatant lies ever.

With his pick for acting attorney general under fire,

President Trump is defending his choice

while also seeming to distance himself

from the new man overseeing Mueller.

I don't know Matt Whitaker.

Matt Whitaker worked for Jeff Sessions

and he was always extremely highly thought of,

and he still is, but I didn't know Matt Whitaker.

TV REPORTER: But that's not what he told Fox News a month ago.

TRUMP:

(laughter)

You know, sometimes Trump lies so hard

he gives my brain whiplash.

Because most people lie in a gradual curve.

"I know him. Well, actually,

I know him through a friend. Well, I don't know..."

Trump is just like the Tokyo Drift of lying.

One minute he's like, "He's my best friend."

Then he's like, "Never heard of him."

Then Sarah Huckabee's at the finish line like,

"That was totally normal driving.

At no point did the president change his direction."

I mean, at this point, you just got to laugh

when Trump contradicts himself.

He's like Newton's third law:

for every Trump, there is an equal and opposite Trump.

And by the way...

(cheers and applause)

And by the way...

he also fits Newton's first law:

a Trump at rest will remain at rest.

That's right, we're doing physics jokes today, people.

Buckle up.

Now, on a normal day, we'd have all the time to talk about

how Trump appointing the volleyball from Cast Away

as attorney general might be part

of an ongoing plan to obstruct justice,

but we just don't have the time right now,

because there's a giant emergency in California,

and the president is making things worse.

The U.S. president responded to what's happening in California

over the weekend in a series of tweets.

Trump tweeted...

(reading):

-(booing) -Okay, now, um...

now, this might sound crazy,

but I'm actually with Trump on this one.

The man knows fires, okay?

He fired Gary Busey. He fired Meat Loaf.

I feel like he fires Omarosa every six months.

If anyone's a fire expert, it's him.

But yes, instead of lending

a message of support and comfort,

Trump is blaming people while the fire is still happening.

And, on top of that, he's incorrect.

One, most experts say that the state's major fires

have nothing to do with forest management,

and two, this could have all been avoided

if Don Jr. hadn't hunted down Smokey the bear.

So it's been a rough few days for Trump.

But he had a chance to put all of this behind him

in France, where the president traveled

to mark the 100-year anniversary of the end of World War I.

All he had to do was show up for a ceremony

at an American cemetery to honor the World War I troops.

Super easy.

But apparently not easy enough.

President Trump facing criticism right now

over the decision to skip an event

honoring American troops killed in France during World War I,

calling off the trip

because he could not chopper to it in the rain.

Other leaders made it.

The White House is blaming rain for not being able to make it.

The optics were undeniably awful

as other world leaders were able to pay their respects.

Okay, so, the president's helicopter

can't fly in the rain?

What, does the helicopter need to keep its hair dry, too?

-Is that what it is? -(laughter)

(cheering and applause)

And...

and look, I understand weather.

Even if the helicopter couldn't fly,

surely the president could have found another way to get there.

I mean, all the other world leaders did.

Even Merkel. Even Angela Merkel made it,

and her side lost World War I.

She had to be out in the rain like,

"We have come here to honor those fallen soldiers

who beat the Scheiße out of mein country."

And it was especially bad

because when Trump didn't show up,

Merkel used the opportunity to refight World War I.

"I unconcede! I unconcede! We unconcede!"

Look what you did, Donald.

Now, we don't even have time

to get into how much backlash Trump got

for taking a rain check on honoring fallen soldiers,

because we have to focus on the tragic end

of his bromance with Macron.

They used to be friends,

and things seem to be falling apart.

And we've put this together in a special film we call

Merci, Next.

They certainly do appear to be having a great relationship,

Macron and President Trump.

♪ ♪

The two leaders showing their affection and friendship

beyond the usual handshakes.

President Trump, who, minutes after he landed here

on French soil on Friday

sent off that critical tweet about the French president,

really setting the stage for conflict.

At one moment, President Macron even reached over

and touched President Trump's leg.

Important to note that President Trump

didn't return the favor.

And it did seem that President Trump

was in a sullen mood.

Our time, she's finished.

On Veterans Day, Advocates Warn Against Pence & Trump-Led Attacks on VA Healthcare - Duration: 7:29.

AMY GOODMAN: This is Democracy Now!

I'm Amy Goodman, as we turn to this federal observance of Veterans Day, to the issue of

veterans' healthcare.

On Sunday, Vice President Mike Pence wrote an article for Fox News titled "Veterans

have no better friend than President Trump."

Pence touted Trump's record on veterans' health, writing, "President Trump has signed

the most substantial veterans' health-care reform in a generation, making Veterans Choice

a permanent part of American law.

Today our veterans have access to the real-time, world-class care they have earned, whether

at a private health-care provider or the Department of Veterans Affairs.

This law will also improve the VA's ability to recruit and retain quality health-care

professionals, give veterans access to walk-in care, and expand health-care choices, including

options for telehealth and mental health services," the vice president wrote.

Critics of the law say it's an attempt to drain the Veterans Health Administration of

needed resources, eventually forcing the privatization of the system.

Meanwhile, the issue of veterans' mental health was raised again last week after a

former marine opened fire at a country music bar last week in Thousand Oaks, California,

killing 12 people, mostly college students.

Police have identified the gunman as 28-year-old Ian David Long, a Marine veteran who had deployed

to Afghanistan and had a history of mental health issues, including possibly PTSD.

Sam Tanner, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps with Ian Long, told The New York Times,

quote, "I'm not surprised someone I knew ended up doing a mass shooting.

We had another guy recently committed suicide by cops in Texas.

Guys struggle.

We've lost more marines in our peer group to suicide than we ever lost in Afghanistan,"

he said.

Earlier this year, Long was evaluated by mental health professionals after police responded

to a disturbance at his home, where he lived with his mother, but he was cleared by the

specialists.

Clearly, his neighbors said, his mother was afraid of him.

For more, we're joined by award-winning journalist and author Suzanne Gordon.

Her new book, Wounds of War: How the VA Delivers Health, Healing, and Hope to the Nation's

Veterans.

She recently wrote an article for The New York Times headlined "By Protecting Veterans'

Health, You May Protect Your Own."

Welcome to Democracy Now!, Suzanne.

SUZANNE GORDON: Thank you.

AMY GOODMAN: You wrote this piece, "By Protecting Veterans' Health, You May Protect Your Own."

Explain.

SUZANNE GORDON: Well, the Veterans Health Administration doesn't just care for veterans

and give innovative, state-of-the-art care to the nation's military veterans.

It also conducts research—the shingles vaccine, the nicotine patch, the first liver transplant—that

helps all Americans.

I thank the VA for my shingles vaccine, for example.

It also teaches about 70 percent of American physicians in training.

It teaches nurses, psychologists, social workers.

And it develops models of clinical care that really help us all.

I mean, I've never seen teamwork practiced so thoroughly as I have in VA hospitals, and

I've been covering private-sector healthcare for almost 35 years.

The end-of-life care and palliative care it gives to patients with cancer and other of

diseases that will end up in their deaths is really amazing.

The VA practically invented the field of geriatrics.

I mean, I live in Northern California, and Kaiser, which is a system that is very close

to the VA but nowhere near as good as it, in my view, has a handful of, if any, geriatricians

to deal with an aging population.

So, the VA continues to innovate.

I mean, right now they're doing a Million Veteran Program in order to look at the impact

of genes on health.

They're developing ways of dealing with demented patients that are angry and aggressive

and unable to be transferred to nursing homes.

I watched one program where a World War II veteran was terrified when they opened the

window shade, because he thought—speaking of the armistice—he thought that the Nazis

were coming in the window.

And they taught the nurses and the aides how to deal with this veteran without using any

kind of restraints and were able finally to get him into a nursing home.

And they had called him down so much that when I walked in the room one day, after seeing

him the other day in a very agitated state, he came up to me, and he asked me how I was,

and kissed my hand.

AMY GOODMAN: Can you talk about Pence's statement about President Trump signing the

most substantial veterans' healthcare reform in a generation, making Veterans Choice a

permanent part of American law.

What is this about?

SUZANNE GORDON: So, this is—he's referring to the VA Mission Act of 2018, which was passed

in June.

Sadly, too many Democrats also voted for this act.

This act definitely is a big change.

And what it will do is not make veterans healthier or really help them to deal with the many

different wounds of war and of military service that they suffer from.

It's going to starve the VA of resources.

I mean, it allows many more veterans to go into private-sector hospitals and doctors

and mental health providers and so forth, who various studies show are not familiar

with their many very specific problems.

Every dollar that is paid to the private sector will come out of the VHA budget, the Veterans

Health Administration budget.

So, pretty soon what we'll see is there will be more money going to private-sector

doctors and hospitals, that are not equipped to take care of veterans' problems, and

money will be taken right out of the VHA budget.

And what you'll see then is facility closures, layoffs, service cuts, etc.

And you may even see, because this is going to be so expensive, because private-sector

care is two to three times more expensive than VA care—I mean, Veterans Health Administration

physicians and other staff are on salary, so they have no incentive to overtreat.

They have no incentive to duplicate tests.

They have no incentive to order other tests that aren't necessary.

And so the costs are going to rise.

And I think what we're going to see is that there will be cuts in eligibility, in which

veterans are eligible for this care, and cuts in which services they are eligible for.

And this is the veteran—it's called the VA Mission Act, and I think it's all about

killing the mission of the VA, which is to give high-quality care to the kind of veterans

that come back from war with serious problems, like Adam Hochschild described in the earlier

segment, and the kind of mental health and pain problems and other problems that so many

veterans suffer from.

AMY GOODMAN: Suzanne Gordon, we're going to just break for 30 seconds, then come back.

And I want to ask you about Ian Long, the alleged shooter in the Thousand Oaks case

who gunned down 12 people, mainly college kids.

SUZANNE GORDON: Yes.

AMY GOODMAN: He's a Marine Corps vet.

Stay with us.
