Tax reform front and center as we wait for House Republican leaders to hold their weekly news conference
President Trump seeking bipartisan support for his tax cutting agenda
So what is the White House have to say we're gonna find out directly from Kellyanne
Conway in just moments welcome to a brand new hour of America's newsroom i'm shannon bream
Good morning to you to see you in person again
I'm in a while i'm bill hemmer. Good morning the president meeting later today with about a dozen moderate lawmakers both sides of the aisle
Republicans and Democrats after hosting a bipartisan dinner last night with tax cuts on the menu at the White House get it
The president tweeting earlier today the approval process for the biggest tax cut and tax reform package in the history of our country will soon
begin move fast Congress and tweets
Laura Ingraham on special report was talking about the president's push for bipartisan cooperation. Here's her take
The Democrats are going to do what helps them and there are districts
They want some money flow into their districts for some of this infrastructure down the road
And a lot of these Democrats do know that the first tax reform. We've had in 30 years
Could do a lot to reinvigorate this economy
We need this after to natural disasters where we're going to end up spending billions upon billions of dollars
Frankly that we don't have and that we need to spend in order to revitalize these areas
Donald Trump is going to be unpredictable, and I think that's okay
Well last night last night that included a bipartisan dinner last hour
You bill hemmer talked to Senator Joe Manchin who was a part of that conversation?
he's a Democrat who's willing to work across the aisle and
It was interesting to hear his take on how he thought it went
Yeah, I think so
I think it was very positive
But you know turning that it's just something that's workable and that can pass is really a challenge
He said hey all we need are 30 Republicans at 30 Democrat well
I mean easier said than done in Washington the way
It's been operating lately though that is true. All right
So let's check in now with Kelly and Conway senior counselor to the president good morning to you Kelly Ann good morning
Okay, so we have heard now from the White House director of legislative act
Essentially saying listen the president's willing to reach across the aisle because he doesn't think the GOP has been a reliable partner will it work
You also need more than 50 votes on many of these different measures
and we saw with the
Confirmation process of milk or such and do bility qualified for the posting holes in the Supreme Court that we only got three
Democrats to come over we hope this three Democrats and others will recognize
That when it comes to tax reform the small businesses in their states
The property owners the job holders the job seekers the job creators all deserve
Fundamental tax reform and tax rebates we want to repatriate that money from overseas
We would imagine that Democrats also believed along with Republican Shannon that the fact that
companies have parked wealth legally overseas to the trillions and
Jobs have been shipped overseas because American companies are punished under our text apparently
We hope that that has bipartisan agreement because let's face it
That should be a non partisan issue the idea that Americans are working so hard and paying too much
Of the tax burden we really want middle-class Americans to benefit from this president's
Tax reform package weathers to the child care tax credit through a lowering of marginal rates
And making it easier to spur economic growth up to the levels that this nation had until about 2007
All right on this idea of working across the aisle one of our White House producers sent us a note last night
regarding that dinner
And he said a senior source inside the dinner said that this is a new strategy to meet and work with lawmakers across the aisle
It's in part an effort for the President to quote shed the guidance from the Reince Priebus
Area era where the former aren't CR and his aides were?
ensconced with the viewpoint that the president could only work with Republican party leaders the senior source says and confirms to Fox that in the
John Kelly era course general Kelly now the White House chief of staff
Say there's more of a focus on being effective not being locked in by party politics
What is the president's relationship with Senator McConnell and speaker Ryan?
So the president works closely with the leaders of his own party
And he's also committed to working with those who are going to help promote his agenda his agenda is taxi for the jet is
health care for this 29 million
Americans who don't have it who relied to about keeping their plan and keeping their doctor his agenda is about
Infrastructure we have an effort. We have an air traffic control system. That was built for
100,000 passengers annually we now have close to 1 billion how in the world is that a partisan issue?
We would hope Democrats would join this Republican president in making good on
Promising a safer better smarter more efficient and less expensive
and more hassle-free
infrastructure system the permitting process going for 8 years - cheers everything
I'm mentioning to you is good Steve nonpartisan to the average American now
Let's not we don't need to talk about different eras in the White House we need to talk about who Donald Trump
Is he has come to Washington as a disrupter?
But he was a successful businessman mom politician for decades
And he brings those skill sets and that effectiveness to bear on this job in that he's an excellent negotiator
Excellent listener and once anybody who's going to support his agenda on behalf of all Americans who he is committed to
Representing he wants them to come to the table look what he just did with North Korea the fact that we have
unanimous new sanctions against, North Korea
Bringing together a lot of disparate countries who don't necessarily?
often agree on different things
Unanimously supporting the United States and sanction North Korea look what he's doing with hurricane relief
He is unifying the country around helping the rebuilding and recovery efforts and FEMA will have the money
So this is somebody has always been willing to sit down with people of disparate views
But but remember he's the one who got elected here
it's his program that he is pushing so these Democrats gonna come to the White House and talk about tax reform and tax relief and
Repealing replacing Obamacare, maybe the gramm cassidy bill
Then he is willing to listen well
And I understand that today there will be a mix of moderate House
Members Democrats and Republicans to discuss a number of things we understand that daca may be on the table for discussion
With the president sign off on a measure for so-called dreamers that didn't also demand or link to or include funding for the border wall
Well remember the president has said very clearly that he expects that wall to be built and once congressman fundin
I think what our head of legislative affairs mark sharp is saying in a different venue yesterday is just the mechanism
It's what's open to debate, but the president has never backed down and won't now on getting that wall built
We are a sovereign nation that needs borders
We spend billions of dollars helping other nations protect its own borders as haitai that a sovereign nation high-time a sovereign nation like ours
Has our own physical borders to protect
Secondly the president has made very clear many things of doctah. It's there was no constitutional authority
No statutory authority
And he has said to Congress if you want to act go and act you've had seven months to do it here six more you
Have until March now, so that's up to Congress if Congress doesn't act the president will review what they're doing
But everybody knows exactly where President Trump stands on each of these issues and that has not changed well
And we know that you are standing next to a huge piece of equipment
That's making a lot of noise this morning kellyanne's and we thank you very much for your time in the midst of that good to
See you
bill
Thank You Shanna seven minutes past the hour now breaking news out of Florida. It is not good
We're just hearing that five people have died at a nursing home
Where people are being evacuated right now? This is Hollywood, Florida north of Miami?
Meanwhile about four million without power down in the keys 90% of the homes have suffered damage
extensive damage there for the north and Jacksonville floodwaters reaching historic levels and
Significant flooding is expected to continue along portions of the st. Johns River
Meanwhile those northeast of Naples living inland and well below the poverty line struggling to find food and gas
This man describing this situation in one word
Always, been like like I don't want the word of help, but it's been like it's been a struggle for everybody here
But you know what we're gonna make it we hoping each other well far south and the keys Phil Keating is live this morning
I la mirada where he's been for the past 24 hours or so and Phil what are you hearing today? Good morning?
Well good morning bill. We are actually a further south down the keys from Alomar
Ah, no. We came all the way to mile marker 74?
This is the new end of the line for residents who live between that point and cuit seventy four miles of keys
It's a lot of homes a lot of keys a lot of residents many of them over here all lined up in their cars
They've been sitting here waiting for days trying to get down further yesterday
They had to wait in the florida city they waited there for days now obviously the Sheriff's Department
Doesn't want a big group of dozens and dozens of cars here? They're trying to get them out
They don't want to leave they just want to get beyond the roadblock to see their house and see what on earth is left
But according to the sheriff, but my just interview there is very very little
Yeah total devastation from the about 270 mile marker to the probably south about the 15 mile marker looks like a nuclear bomb went off
We cannot let people come into it safe if the trailers are flipped over
You'll see folks that were on the side of will be pushed off with
Bulldozers, you'll see boat sunk everywhere. You'll see front of the buildings not even there
Miami the first camera onto Cudjoe key lasting yesterday afternoon you can see the sheriff is very very accurate as category 4 hurricane
With a hundred and thirty mile an hour winds when it made landfall there cut joki those winds
lasted 12 to 15 hours
and if anything
Didn't fall down in the first three finally that the pressure the strength of the winds just finally became too much now before sunrise
Right here at mile marker 74. You could see people several cars were here camped out in the dark
They had driven out here around midnight saying
They saw multiple convoys of gas trucks FEMA trucks and National Guard trucks
Heading in but of course no resinous yet for Shelby Bentley
He's just living out of this car wondering when he can get back home with his wife who is five months pregnant
So she's been cooped up in that car. She can't recline in it and
Got a rule willing to get arrested
The hands down no doubt. I'm begging for it just so she could have a place to lay down
Now there remains it does to dawn curfew and the keys then the sheriff tells me that's because they have already had
Many instances of looting in the central and Lower Keys people looting by riding in on ATVs by boat
They've made several arrests
And so three dead total from this hurricane so far in the Florida Keys according to the sheriff he expects once
It's all said and done without a doubt there will be more bodies
He says the first other city beyond this point that will likely be able to be
Reopened to people would be Key West is that Key West was to the west of the center of the store and pretty?
Structurally sound as far as power goes
Power lines that should soon be restored and but everything's gonna be days and days and days away
According to this year huge challenge just getting started Thank You Phil Keating good to have you there again today. Thank You Hill
House GOP leaders right now holding a news conference
We are monitoring that there's the speaker. We'll bring you the very latest news as soon as it comes in last this
He is still the chief executive of the country and were charged with
Running the country so when he sees the DEF debt ceiling used as it has been in the recent past
That's extraordinarily frustrating for him
And he's asked me to explore ways to sort of deep lettuce eyes it
So that's Budget Director Mick Mulvaney right some Republican lawmakers are unhappy with the president making deals with Democrats
one of them is Ralph
Norman he took Nick Mulvaney's seat in the House and will get his reaction on the
President's recent push for tax reform coming up live from the hill and as you heard Phil say three dead in the Florida Keys
But not from the storm in this case one of the many dangers facing folks in the wake of Hurricane
Just when you think you know you made it through the storm and would not as you gotta be you got to be you know
Ready for anything you got to be cautious of anything you know before after during
I'm gonna take you now live to Washington the GOP House leadership news conference and Speaker Paul Ryan has just started taking questions
Right
Yes, so what chairman Brady announced to our members this morning is that on the week of the 25th September 25th
There is going to be an outline that is released which reflects the consensus of the tax writing committees
ways and means in finance and the administration
And so what what chairman Brady laid out is the ongoing process for comprehensive tax reform and tax cuts for middle-class families?
This year and it starts with the outline that will be released the 25th
And then the tax writing committees are going to take feedback and input
And then they're gonna go produce their bills in the weeks ahead and so this is the beginning of the process
It's the beginning of a very important process to achieve for the first time in a generation
overhauling our tax system and giving middle-class families a much deserved break
And so this is really the consensus of the tax writers themselves
So that we're working on the same page the whole point of all of this is
the House the Senate and the White House
Are starting from the same page and the same outline and then the tax writers are going to take it from there on the details?
Well I would love to have the Democrats supporting and working with us an extra struct of way on tax reform
But we're gonna do it no matter what yeah
We're not gonna sit here and negotiate to the media, but let me just be really really clear
Daca is a symptom of a bigger problem, which is we do not have control of our borders?
So while we deal with daca, which is something that we the president has asked us to deal with in Congress?
We also have to deal with the problem in the first place
securing our borders enforcing our laws
So that we don't have another daca problem 10 years down the road. It's just that clear
that's so common sense and so reasonable and that is basically what the president has asked us to do and
So we're gonna start engaging in these conversations with all of our members all across
The capital the that's what the president has asked us to do is Congress
Get on top of this issue and by getting on top of this issue that means not just a narrow fix
For the moment, but it's actually fixing some of the underlying problems that created this problem in the first place
Casey
Yes, I am
I'm not gonna get into the baseline issues. That's something up for the budget resolutions and the budget committees what?
Writers and the administration, which is the basic template that then the tax writing committees will work on and filling out those?
Are you been listening in there
Speaker Paul Ryan took some questions on tax reform on daca and all kinds of things so joining us now, South Carolina congressman
I can't make Mulvaney who's
