Question: The profile picture disappeared on my Google Photo app.

My profile picture disappeared on my Google Photos app.

Hello Wei,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

Do you see the profile picture in your Google account (like - Gmail, Google Maps, Google Chrome) when signed in? If yes, please give the below steps a try in a sequence to help resolve the issue:
  • Check your internet connection (mobile data).
  • Close the Google Photos app and re-launch it.
  • Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos with the same Google Account.
  • Clear App data:
    • Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
    • Touch Apps.
    • Select Google Photos in the list.
    • Touch Clear data.
  • Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:
    • Visit the Google Play Store.
    • Open Google Photos.
    • Touch on Update.
Let me know how it goes.

How do I know photos and videos are back up completed and when i will know about that .Because I am sending phone for repair to service centre .if all apps & photos and videos get deleted from phone ? How do I restore them??

Answer:

The best, and only sure, way to know that a backup from your phone is successful is by opening Google Photos (photos.google.com) on a browser of a device other than the one that captured the pictures, then signing into the same Google Photos account that your phone uses.

Question: Why are some of my videos getting converted into pictures in Google photos? Not able to convert back

I can't seem to find a way to convert them back in to video and I'm not sure why they got changed in the first place. Instead of video, I have like 100 still images of the video. I also noticed that when recovering some deleted videos through a recovery app, the same thing happened to one of them, it got converted to a screenshot but the video is gone. A little frustrated here!

Answer:

Probably it were life-pictures originally (most likely from iPhone), but that is a still picture + a short movie.
And apparently Google picked the still image - maybe in the past.

Google states: Live photos can be backed up if you use the Google Photos app on your iPhone or iPad.

So this only can be repaired if the originals are still on that iPhone with the Google app installed.

Question: Motion Photos and issues with downloading to Android to make photo books

My husband and each upload the photos taken from our phones to Google Photos.  We share all photos.  He has an iPhone and I have an Android.

Whenever I try to download his photos taken with his iPhone, they download as a zip file and I cannot upload them into Snapfish to create our kids annual photo books.  I also can't post to Facebook or attach to an email or send via text.  I use a Chromebook when creating our kids photo books.  Please help! This is a serious pain in the behind.

He has only had the iPhone for 1 year.  I'm just getting around to putting together the kids 2018 books.  I have tried disabling the motion settings in Google Photos, but they still download in the zip file.  Help!!!

Answer:

That they download as a zip is normal and not caused by the iPhone but by your way of downloading.
And a Chromebook has no good option to unpack the zip into a normal folder with files which can be uploaded to Snapfish.

But I don't understand why you don't have the same problem with your Android pictures, or can you connect directly to your Google Photos on the Snapfish-site???

If so, the correct method is: select the pictures needed on the iPhone, then click + to create a shared album send to you. And if you open the album, you can download its contents directly into your own library and put them in the album for printing. Then you avoid downloading to your Chromebook and the zip-problem.

I don't understand what your mean withdisabling the motionsettings, but they have nothing to do with zipping. However Apple has nasty habits like "live pictures" with are in fact short movies.

Please reply here for further questions.

Answer:

Hi Emily Anauo,

Thank you for posting to the Google Photos Forum today, why can't you just unzip the photos? Chromebooks have built in support to be able to open the zipped files as a folder so you can share them wherever you like?

If you have anymore follow up questions, please let us know.

Answer:

Mark: please don't mark your own answer(s) as recommanded because that causes misleading duplicates on this bad forum layout.
Besides: the OP should do that if he or she is helped by your answer.

Of course you can open a zip on Chromebooks directly, but apparently Emily did not understand what to do next and that depends on the way Snapfish handles her Google Photos).

Answer:

I revisited my Chromebook to discover the problem with zips if you want to upload their contents to your album for printing on Google Photos: if you click Upload, you simple can't find that zip.
So you need to start in the Filemanager and then open Photos.zip to see the files and then you can choose Upload on Google Photos and then you can select these files and after they ar uploaded, you will be asked to which album they should be added and you can select the album create for printing via Snapfish.
So a different order then normally.

Answer:

How do I unzip the files?  When I try and open the zipped folder, the iPhone photo is either an "HEIC" or a "mov" file.  I can't even open the HEIC file.

Answer:

Hi Emily,

These files are the iPhone equivalents of jpeg files. Some websites like Google Photos and Facebook will accept them when you upload them but some won't.

I firstly suggest trying to upload these files to the website you want, to see if they support them. If not, you may be able to download them one by one from the Google Photos website as still images. You can do this by clicking the three dots on the top right hand corner of each photo.

Let me know if you have any more questions 馃榾

It looks like there is a limit of 600 labeled faces in the Google Photos. I have noticed that a lot of labeled faces lost their label. It seams that after labeling new face, some random face lose it's label.

Hi Danijel,

Thank you for stopping by the Google Photos Help Forum.

I do understand the inconvenience as the face tagging of your Google Photos has stopped working. Therefore, I recommend trying the steps below in sequence, this may help in fixing the issue:
Hope this helps.

Answer:

Hi,
thank you for your answer. However, problem seams server side, not client side.
After I tag about 650 faces.... I see 650 tagged faces, but in few days or weeks, Photos seams to lose some tags (or could be whole face models)... and it keeps falling to about 600 tagged persons... This is happening for over a year...

It looks like Photos is regularly losing whole face model for some people. Those faces are not recognized in images for some time and they reappear as untagged face in Persons section (some faces I have tagged for 5, 6 times already).

Thank you,
Danijel

Same problem:
I am uploading thousends of pictures. Face recognition worked properly up to 150 groups. Now no face groups are added for several weeks although lots of new faces are uploaded in the meantime.
Any idea?
Peter

Answer:

Same here. I'm quite strict on face tagging, trying to train the algorithm in the right way and making sure everyone has the correct names. But unfortunately there is an (unknown and unadvised) limit to the number of faces Google tags. Sorry, I have a big family, a few friends, and a looong list if acquaintances.

Answer:

Since Google photos has a very low limit on the number of faces that can be identified and since it untags faces when we add new ones does anyone know of any program that could do facial recognition or at facial tagging that is more advanced than Google photos? I also wish they would incorporate some of the features from Picasa into Google photos but they body said they wouldn't will not do that  already said they won't

Answer:

I found this limit after 400 face groups.
I decided not to use it any more to add face, unfortunatly for me. The work to add face is very heavy in time....

Answer:

Hi Ronald,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Forum.

Just to let you know, the photos that you'd delete from your device will still show up under Google Photos. But if you'd delete photos and videos from Google Photos, they will also get removed from:
  • photos.google.com and any synced devices
  • Google Photos albums
  • Google Photos movies when you edit them.
  • Google Drive, for photos and videos that are synced with Google Drive.
  • Any shared albums you may have added them to.
Once you delete them from your Google Photos, only the latest photos of your device will get synced with Google Photos.

For more information, please check the Help Center Article on deleting photos and videos.

Hope this helps.

Picasa can't upload (or sync) to Google Photos anymore, but you can use it for preparing neat albums with the pictures still stored on your computer. That always has been its main purpose.

If I could only reliably view Google Photos offline all my digital photo album issues would be gone. I realize they are just stored in my Androids cache but it almost works. I want to make it work better.

Does anyone (that has actually accomplished this) found a way to get 100% of the photos available for viewing offline? I work on ships at sea, often without internet or with slow satellite internet. I can usually see 60% of my photos offline.

I keep a very organized digital album, have for years. But I no longer have the patience for the amount of work involved. Downloading the new photos to my PC sorting them into windows folders then dragging them onto my sd card. PITA (pain in the ....).

Thanx!

Answer:

Hi Clifford,

there's unfortunately no way of viewing all photos offline other than keeping a local copy of all the photos.

The Google Photos mobile app requires an Internet connection to access the photos available only online. If you have more photos online than fit in the local storage of your device Google Photos is forced to use an Internet connection to show the ones you don't have locally.

As you noted, the only alternative is to copy the photos on the device.

Answer:

I've been waiting long for this feature too! I became a google one subscriber because of google photos(and it's the only reason to keep me paying), recently I've switched to a new phone, the pain of no offline just make me want to unsubscribe!

What we want is just an option to download all the photos to our device, we'll care about data consumption or device storage issue. Hide it in settings, warning about anything, just give me that button!

For the workaround of copying all photos to device, I haven't tried but would be concerned about the chaos of duplicated photos.

If the decision has been made, please at least share us the reason behind it, is it because of CDN cost? Please don't say it's for user's good, I simply don't buy that, what could a default off option hurt?

Answer:

I have sort of found a way of viewing an album offline on a phone.  The album was initially created from pictures taken on two different phones and a camera.  All were collated on my PC before being uploaded as an Album to Google Photos online.  I then wanted to be able to show all the photos on my phone without having to have an internet connection.  I discovered that if I first browse through every photo in the album on the phone whilst I do have an internet connection, the each photo gets cached by the Google Photos app on my phone.  I can then switch off the wifi on my phone and happily scroll through the album on it with no internet connection.  Its a bit laborious but it works.  I don't know how long the pictures remain in the cache, but if they stay there till you manually clear it then this solution might be practical to address some users requirements.

Answer:

Google is extremely smart it doesn't allows u to remain offline so that it can extract and collate information about you and distribute your precious and personal information to its other apps and programs.which is not possible if ur offline

Answer:

That's a sick idea: as long as recent pictures are stored on your phone, you can view them offline perfectly.
But for older pictures which are at Google only, you should be online of course.
So if you need more storage locally, you need to store older pictures on micro-sd inserted before they can be deleted from normal memory. When you are online then, they will not be removed from Google accidently.

Answer:

@Fatima Oluwatoyin
When you have no internet connection it can only show what is on the device. That can not only be the photos that are in folders on the device, but also cached photos (these can disappear at any time) or thumbnails (probably less sharp).

Currently it only lists whole bunch of faces, I do not see several faces that exists in the pics I took over last month.  How to add those faces so I can select them to make father's day movie.

Answer:

Hello Muthugomu,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos Support Community.

To apply label manually:
  • At the top of a person's face group, click "Who's this?"
  • Enter a name or nickname. Now you'll be able to search with that label using the search box.
Note: Only you will see the private face labels you choose, even if you share those photos.

Know what 'remove results' option is for:

If you see a photo that's in the wrong group, you can take it out.
  1. Open the group you want to remove something from.
  2. Select the photo you want to remove.
  3. At the top right, click More , then Remove results.
  • Go to Google Photos appSettings > Group similar facesFace grouping.
Note: This will not delete the photo or video from your Google Photos library. Here's a help article for your reference to know more about face grouping and adding a label. Facial recognition feature isn't restricted to region specific. Here's a help article to more on how to use it.

If yes, give the below steps a try to help resolve the issue:
  • Close the Google Photos app and re-launch it.
  • Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos with the same Google Account.
  • Clear App data:
    • Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
    • Touch Apps.
    • Select Google Photos in the list.
    • Touch Clear data.
  • Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:
    • Visit the Google Play Store.
    • Open Google Photos.
    • Touch on Update.
Let me know how it goes.

Hello,
I am currently using a OnePlus 6 Android phone. I recently took a few photos related to my daughter's birth certificate from a government office. ( Background I am from Pune, India and for birth certificate corrections the process involves taking a photo from an old physical file and then showing it to another government employee in another office as proof)

The government employee deleted the photo from my phone and since i was in a non Wifi zone the photo was not backed up. How do I know that i'm not hallucinating and I really did take the photo.  Google asked me to contribute the photo for the location and then could not upload it because the photo was deleted.

I have looked at my online account and in trash and archive and cannot find the photo. I cannot prove that the employee in question deleted the photo. I only want to recover this important document.

Any help in recovering the photo would be very helpful.

Answer:

If its not at photos.google.com then it didnt backp and if its not in the trash in the photos app  there is no way to get that photo back

Google photos uses the wrong date for many of my photos - placing them years away from when they were actually captured.

Below is the relevant exif data from one of the images. Note that the photo was captured 12/25/1992 (the date time original). Google Photos claims the date is 2/8/2009 (the modified date). Possibly relevant - notice that the time portion of date/time original is blank. Depending on the interpretation of the EXIF spec, this is legal.

See DateTimeOriginal here.

ExifTool Version Number         : 11.69
File Modification Date/Time     : 2013:01:12 17:35:45-05:00
File Access Date/Time           : 2019:10:03 15:38:03-04:00

Profile Date Time               : 2002:10:25 13:32:16

Answer:

Please explain the source of your original date because there were no digital cameras in 1992.
Because the missing time (and timezone) maybe the cause that Google prefers the modified date above the incomplete shooting date.
For such old series I use a batch-tric in Irfanview to create exif date & time increasing in one minutes intervals and gives perfect results: correctly sorted pictures and albums.
This method is described in this link

My gallery pics r disappeared due to clear cache and in Google photos app trash also i didn't find and while taking photos my net was off can I get my important pics plz help me

Answer:

Hi Dj Kanna Impressive,

I’m sorry, it’s not possible to recover photos permanently deleted from the Google Photos Trash. However, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps and run a scan for anything to recover.

In addition I recommend that you contact the Google Drive support team to see if any deleted files may be recovered. Just open the Google Drive https://support.google.com/drive/?hl=en&authuser=0#topic=14940&contact=1 contact form, click Missing or deleted files, select a contact option, and be sure to tell them you permanently deleted files in Google Drive.

Recover permanently deleted photos and videos.

Hi,

Thanks for posting in the Google Photos community.

If you have permanently deleted them from the trash folders, the only option is to try Google Takeout (takeout.google.com) and see if you can recover them that way.

Hope this helps.

Question: Data loss because of duplicate image matching

The current implementation of duplicate image matching causes unexpected data loss in the following scenario:

1. Upload new pics A, B, and C into new Album 1.
2. Upload new pics B, D, and E into new Album 2.
3. From Album 1, select pic B and move it to the trash.
4. Pic B is also removed from Album 2 and anywhere else it was present. There was no indication that Pic B as uploaded to Album 2 was linked with Pic B as uploaded to Album 1.

This is unexpected and dangerous behavior because it causes data loss if images happen to be identical and then are moved to the trash, regardless of how they were originally uploaded.

This situation is easily encountered when sharing albums with friends who might upload the same image, adding folders of images that may contain previously taken images, and if images are copied across folders before uploading.

Edit : Sometimes the image's info will display it in both albums. This is insufficient and not a feasible solution for albums with more than a few dozen images, and still does not address the situation when an image was uploaded to an album and was present already in the un-albumed photos.)

Are there plans to resolve this problem? What are the best approaches to ensure that photos are not removed if they were identified as duplicates? Looking through individual photos to check the information is not a feasible or reliable solution.

Answer:

Hi BrettP,

You Remove from album option instead of Move to trash. This is the solution for your problem.

For the example you said:

You have created two albums named AlbumForFriend1 and AlbumForFriend2. After that you have added GroupPhoto.jpg into those two albums.
Then you shared the albums respectively for FriendName1 and FriendName2.
Friend1 added the same GroupPhoto1.jpg into AlbumForFriend1.
Now your AlbumForFriend1 have two GroupPhoto1.jpg on the other hand AlbumForFriend2 have only one.

Then you choose Remove from album for GroupPhoto1.jpg from AlbumForFriend1. It will be removed only from AlbumForFriend1, no matter whether it was uploaded by you or your FriendName1. In the end both albums have only one GroupPhoto.jpg.

Please let me know, if you have any further questions.

Answer:

Besides: in the library on photos.google.com you can see to which albums (or none) a picture is assigned if you open its infopanel like shown below:

Here you can see that this picture was assigned to two albums: my private yearalbum and to my shared yearalbum. Maybe I do want to remove this one from the shared album, then I can select that album and remove that picture from the album.
Pictures in albums are reference to the library and by using "remove from album" I only remove that reference - not the original in library.
But of course: Google should have been more clear that "Move to trash" means "Removing everywhere".

So you still are adviced to send a feedback via the main  menu to make clear that this should be more clear.

Answer:

@Barry - Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, what you have suggested is not a solution to the problem that images that are identified as identically are linked, nor does it address the inability to easily remove images within the context of an album without mistakenly removing previously uploaded images.

@Rinus - Thanks for the reply, but please re-read the original question. I specifically stated that inspecting the images "Info" pane is not a feasible solution.

The problem is that actions taken on one image are applied to all images that are uploaded separately that are identified as identical. This is not expected behavior nor is there any indication that an image just uploaded will be associated with a previously uploaded image.

Answer:

I know, but it is the only way available Brett.

It is the eternal complaint that people want to see in library if an image already is assigned to albums and we all know (after so many years of disappointments) that Google is very lazy with essential improvements: apparently nobody there is using their own stuff on any serious level.

But your statement is confusing:
The problem is that actions taken on one image are applied to all images that are uploaded separately that are identified as identical. This is not expected behavior nor is there any indication that an image just uploaded will be associated with a previously uploaded image.

Images with identical metadata are not uploaded twice, but different albums may contain references to the same images in library.
However: if the visual image looks the same, but the metadata differs due to a different caption, that picture is uploaded as a separate file in library. So you can have A1 in album Friends and A2 in album Enemies  and visually that will be a bit confusing indeed.

Answer:

Please let me know, if you have any further questions.

Answer:

@BrettP
I agree that items 1 and 3 would mitigate the effect you are seeing.

Item 2 raises the question of photos being marked as duplicates when in fact this doesn't happen.  The actual process during uploading is that there is an initial binary comparison and if the photos are identical then the upload is skipped and the already backed up copy is used for any subsequent action. A post upload prompt which explained this would indeed be beneficial.

Are there plans to resolve this problem?
We have no visibility of Google's plans, but can only say that for the last 14 years Google have systematically 'simplified' how Google Photos works with the focus on Android and iOS devices. However they always impress on us that if the demand is there nothing is ruled out.

What are the best approaches to ensure that photos are not removed if they were identified as duplicates?
The best approach is to accept that Duplicates are never uploaded.  Unique photos exist once in Google Photos.  Albums are virtual collections of pointers to that one copy, regardless of their path up to Google Photos.  Delete the original or any single pointer and all instances will be deleted.

I have a paid G Suite account for business, I want to export all my photos and so far have tried accessing the photos from within drive, switched the option on and off to show photos but all that displays are the sub folders and no photo's. on my iPhone I have tried to download and nothing, why does Google make this so hard?  most of my photos are not in albums so I can't download albums, I am using a Mac

Answer:

Hello Paul,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Forum.

If you're trying to download the backed up Google Photos photos back to your device and it's a huge amount of photos and videos to download, you can use google.com/takeout to export your data, you will have to extract the archive and manually transfer/download it to your device or external storage device.

You could use takeout via your mobile device as well, but you may have to source a program to decompress the archive and you also need to ensure you have enough space on the device to fit your entire library. By doing this, the photos from cloud will get downloaded to your phone.

But if it's few photos, you can also manually download them. here's how you can do so:
  • Open the Google Photos app on your Android device.
  • Sign in to it.
  • Select the photo you want to download.
  • Click on Download/Save to device.
Keep me posted.

Best,
Amanda

Hi,

I switched from the Google Photo Uploader app to Backup and Sync on my Mac as I had no choice.  I ticked the box to only upload photos and videos.  (Not initially, but withing a few hours).

I see that my photos directories are appearing under My Computers.  Most of the files seems to take 0 bytes.  However, there are some others, such as picasa.ini type files that take up a little bit of storage.According to the settings page, Google photos is taking up about 1.5GB of storage, which pushes me over the 15GB limit.

I don't see how this is possible since I asked for High Quality backups, not original.  Is it those picasa.ini files??Any suggestions?  I will soon be unable to send or receive emails.

Thanks in advance,-Marc

Answer:

Picasa.ini files store only editing information, so I doubt that's the culprit. Is there any chance your phone is set to store images in Original quality? If so, and if your phone is not a Pixel, I suspect that it is images captured on your phone taking up the space.

Answer:

Thank you for your reply.

I don't think my phone is involved at all as I haven't made changes to the iOS app in a long time.  That 1.5GB showed up after I had to switch to Backup and Sync on my Mac.  Using High Quality.

Answer:

Still, you should check the settings on your IOS device just to be sure you are not backing up in Original quality. It's possible that Backup & Sync just started reporting the storage from your phone.

Answer:

Sometimes it's hard to tell why some photos are using storage space when you've selected High Quality. But, you should be able to recover that space. On a computer Google Photos settings, Recover Space. Here's a video: https://youtu.be/0L04oeyn3-Q
