I would like to control where and how my photos are stored, have read all the online help and articles and still cannot understand "WHAT IS STORED WHERE, AND WHY".

 I am running Chrome on a W10 PC.  I have my Google account set up for Google Photos and Google Docs, as well as Calendar and Contacts and Gmail.  All of my questions relate to using online access through Chrome, or online use of Picasa 3 -- that is, I use Picasa 3 to manage photos on my PC and may upload a small number of them using the upload procedure.   I do not have a "Google Photos" application on my PC,  nor do I have any "Backup & Sync" application installed either.

 The help file for Google Photos mentions "Backup and Sync" ONLY in the context of Google Drive. It is turned off in my Google Photos settings.  Furthermore, whatever Google product I have used over the years, I have never asked to have all these photos uploaded -- just a hundred or so, occasionally .  Nonetheless......when I run Google Photos from my browser it appears that all of the photos stored offline on my PC are visible, and "Copy Link Address" produces URLs at photos.google.com/photos/Identifier. However, if I go to my "Google Drive" area, there is no evidence of the photos, just a few documents I put there.

QUESTION 1 -- Are there really copies of my photos somewhere in the Google "cloud\

Hi @Neal,

It sounds like a couple of things are happening with your backing up and can understand your confusion. I'm going to try my best to sort through all this for you, but it may take a bit of time.

Firstly, Picasa is no longer supported. As you can see on the website, Google Photos has replaced Picasa. Any photos that you upload via Picasa, now can be found in Google Photos. This is why your photos uploaded from Picasa, now have a link to Google Photos. 

There can be a relationship between Google Photos and Google Drive if you wish but it only happens if you choose it. This can be done in the settings of Google Photos. If you don't have this triggered, then your photos will only be visible in Google Photos, and not in Google Drive. This is likely why you can't see any evidence of your photos there.

This means that you can manage your photos either in Google Drive OR Google Photos with the following rules applying:

• If you edit photos in Google Photos, changes won't show in Google Drive.
• When you delete a photo from Google Photos, it'll also get deleted from Google Drive.
• If you delete a photo from Google Drive, it'll also get deleted from Google Photos.
  • But if you add that photo to an album in Google Photos, it won't be deleted from those albums. 
• If you delete from the Google Photos folder in My Drive:
  • If you delete individual photos or videos, they will be removed from Google Photos.
  • If you delete folders (including the Google Photos folder), photos and videos won't be deleted in Google Photos. This is to avoid deleting all your photos and videos by accident.
  • If you move photos from the Google Photos folder to a different folder and delete them from there, they'll also be deleted in Google Photos.

In regards to managing your photos locally, Google Photos doesn't have quite the features that Picasa had. In order to 'manage' your photos locally, all that is offered is Backup and Sync which just backs up and syncs any new images on your computer (from folders that you have selected) to Google Photos. There is no ability to edit the photos using this software. Think of it in terms of a cloud backup of your photos.

I no longer have Picasa on my computer so I can confidently provide the steps but if you would like to delete files from Google Photos but NOT from your local computer, I'd check to make sure that those folders aren't listed in Picasa's upload preferences. If they are, I would recommend removing them and then deleting the files from Google Photos. Then, add the folders on your computer with the photos you wish to add to the cloud back into Picasa.  

Lastly, Archive in Google Photos is what it sounds like. It's a form of storing away your photos out of your 'stream' but keeping them in Google Photos. 

Any photos that you archive:

• Will still be in any albums that they were added to, search results, and folders on your device.
• Won't be used to create movies or animations.

I hope this has helped. If I've missed anything or perhaps need to explain it in a different way, please let me know.

First, I want to thank Kim for her reply -- it was helpful in clarifying things for me, but not entirely.

1.  I cannot figure out how most of the photos managed by Picasa 3 on my PC became uploaded to Google Photos. 

I could not locate an "upload anything automatically" option in Picasa, though I have used the manual upload procedure for small numbers of photos.  Perhaps with the demise of Picasa Web Albums, Google decided to upload all photos into Google Photos as a courtesy ??

2. Judging from the rules about the relationship between Google Drive and Google Photos, is the following :

There is only one  physical copy of the original photo between G Drive and G Photos and a collection of links between them and folder and album names.  An edited photo creates a new physical copy in G Photos only. ??

3. Though I did not ask about Android, a major difference between G Photos on the Android and G Photos on the web is that the one on the web focuses entirely on photos stored in the cloud, not on my device (PC), whereas the app on my  Android device will operate both on photos on the device, as well as photos stored in the cloud.  Is this a correct understanding ?

That's confusing, because on normal Androids you have to pay for more storage at Google One and then you also can use these additional editing functions. Having unlimited storage for free always has been normal also, but after June 1 everyone except Pixel-5 users need to start paying when needing more then 15 GB. But the real reason is explained below: 

 

If you're a Google One member or a Pixel user, you can get more editing features through the Google Photos app. Your device must have at least 3 GB RAM and Android 8.0 and up.

To unlock features, subscribe to Google One:

1. From a photo, tap Edit .
2. Tap a feature that’s available to Google One members .
3. To unlock features with a Google One membership, tap the banner.
4. To join Google One, follow the on-screen instructions. 

So you need to unlock the additional feature via a setting at Google One.

If you deleted an item and want it back, check your trash to see if it's there.

1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app .
2. At the bottom, tap Library  Trash .
3. Touch and hold the photo or video you want to restore.
4. At the bottom, tap Restore. The photo or video will be back:
   • In your phone's gallery app
   • In your Google Photos library
   • In any albums it was in

If the item is not in your trash, it may be permanently deleted.

Don't see the photo or video?

If a deleted photo or video isn't in trash, you can't restore it. You won't be able to restore a photo if:

• You moved it to trash more than 60 days ago.
• You moved it to trash, then emptied your trash.
• You permanently deleted it from your trash.
• You permanently deleted it from your device's Gallery app, without backing it up first.

To find and recover photos easily, turn on back up & sync.

You can download photos one by one.

Regrettably, there is no option to do so on a batch of photos.

 

Alternatively, you can install the Google One app. There is a one time option to restore up to two hundred most recent photos to the device.

However, that will not restore the local folder structure.

There is no requirement to join Google One. The option is available to everyone. 

However, the method may not be helpful to recover something when the count is more than two hundred.

 

Or, you can arrange for a bulk download by visiting the link https://takeout.google.com/.

Select the Google Photos app for data download.

Once the file is ready, you will get an email. Access that & unzip all the attachments into your phone's gallery.

 

That will bring everything to your phone.

15Gb of storage space that's included with all basic Google accounts is shared between Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos.

Can you please confirm the storage being used across all of your Google services? You can do this by visiting https://one.google.com/u/1/storage while signed into your Google account. This will display your storage and which services are taking up storage. Is you are a heavy user of other services (Gmai, Drive) those items will also count toward your 15GB of storage. If required, you can purchase additional storage from that same link.

What a strange question. 

We talk about Google Photos here and when you take a photo with your Android camera, the document photographed becomes a digital photo in good quality.

There are more specialised apps for scanning old prints and documents like Google Photoscan (integrated with the Photos-app or Microsoft Lens (more professional). 

I never have seen an adaptor for scanning color slides - that is more a task for flatbedscanner connected to a computer.
