I'm having an issue where all the photos from one particular shared album seem to have saved to my personal library (i.e., in the Photos tab in my app). Previously, this only showed my own photos as well as any from the shared album that I said to add to my photos. 

I am in several other albums with the owner of the shared album but only this one particular album is doing this - and it's way too many pictures and clogging up my Photos view. Is there some setting that I turned on accidentally that I am just missing? Is there any way to remove these photos from my library without manually doing so? I tried leaving the album and that didn't fix the issue.

Pixel 3a through 5 get free storage at High quality, all uploads at Original size count against the storage allocation.

 

If that is the case for you , please go to https://photos.google.com/settings and use the Recover storage button to reduce the storage used.

Did you empty the trash within Google Photos? If not, you can recover picture from trash up to 30 days.

 

Restore photos & videos

If you deleted an item and want it back, check your trash to see if it’s there.

1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app .
2. At the bottom, tap Library  Trash .
3. Touch and hold the photo or video you want to restore.
4. At the bottom, tap Restore. The photo or video will be back:
   • In your phone’s gallery app
   • In your Google Photos library

However, since you are paying for storage, I BELIEVE that you qualify for Google One Support (I don't have any direct experience with this yet.. I will once I hit my storage limits in about a year)..

Regret to note misy=understanding about the Sync function.

 

Sync will replicate your actions whether you delete on the cloud or on the phone.

 

Nevertheless, you should find the deleted pics in the bin unless you have emptied that too.

That didn't work. I deleted the photos from the camera but thought they were backed up to the cloud. I didn't delete them from my Google photos app. Nothing is in my trash bin in Google photos. Is there a way for Google to chase my photos in cloud somewhere?

The Google Photos app acts as a portal viewer & shows the content from the phone + the one backed up to the cloud.

 

However, that creates a misunderstanding about backup. The actual status of backup needs to be checked periodically by seeing the messages in the app plus visiting the web link https://photos.google.com.

 

Nevertheless, you may install to your Android device a deleted photo recovery app (be sure to not select one that requires rooting) https://play.google.com/store/search?q=recover%20deleted%20photos&c=apps;

and run a scan for anything to recover.

In short, you cannot change the name of a file/photo once uploaded. You can however add a description, which turns into a searchable field within Google Photos.

Normally you own pictures shooted are in jpg-format unless you have set your camera to another format like heic or raw (dng) and that always is super unhandy. 

But if they are backupped  in the high quality modus (now called storage saver) they are converted at Google in jpg's. So if you select them in the Google Photos app and then hit the share-icon (lying V) and select Make link at the bottom, you can paste that link in a mail or message by holding your finger for a while in the textarea and then choose Paste and type some normal text to explain that the receiver should open the link and then can download the pictures one-by-one via their 3 dots.
