I have a photo in my Google Photos library which I would like to save locally to my android device.  When I choose "Save to device" in the Google Photos android app it downloads the photo to DCIM/restored, and I now see it in my local gallery app (Samsung) which is great.  The problem I have is that it now appears twice in the Google Photos app on my phone!  Is there any way to avoid this?

Hello Hawks,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.

Just to let you know that Google Photos should detect duplicates regardless of upload device, unless the files have been modified during transfer between devices. Even if a single bit is different in two images, then Google Photos won't see them as duplicates and it will consider them as two different photos. If you still see the duplicate photos, you may need to delete them manually.

Yes, when I "save to device" from the Google Photos app on my phone the file it creates on my device does seem to be slightly different.  Although the file names are the same they are different in size, the copy that gets downloaded to my device seems to be half the size of the original on the Google Photos cloud.  

Please see example below.

I have the same issue.  Loads of duplicates in the Google Photos android app and on the website.  All identical except for file size (which is why they are not being recognised as duplicates i guess).

It seems like it's the android app that is creating the duplicates for some reason.

Edit: example info regarding one single photo:
On device:
Copy 1:
location: /storage/710B-14FC/DCIM/Camera/IMG_20190110_161440044.jpg
size: 525KB
Copy 2:
location: IMG_20190110_161440044.jpg
size: 695KB
On website:
Copy 1:
location: IMG_20190110_161440044.jpg
size: 711.5KB
Copy 2:
location: IMG_20190110_161440044.jpg
size: 183.2KB

All other data (including resolution) is identical.  So between the android app and the website, there's 4 different file sizes for the same photo.

Only one location field on device shows the full path, and it's the external SD card.  I don't know whether that has something to do with it.  But do want to store my photos on external SD because I don't have enough internal storage.

Could you please tell me if you try to watch your photos with the "cast" option of the Google Photos application or directly from a native app on your smart TV?

Thank you for your offer to help me.  I have always been able to simply use the web browser on my Samsung TV model UN65KU6500FXZA to go to Google Photos just like I do on my laptop.  Everything continues to work fine with my laptop when accessing Google Photos but now suddenly when I use my TV I cannot open any albums or individual photos.
Any guidance would be most appreciated!

Honestly, depending on who you gave it to, your photos might be the least of your problems. If you did not reset your device, who knows what personal/financial/other data they might have access to.
 
You should have followed the steps here prior to giving it away:
"What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch"
 
Depending on how phone savvy and dependable they are, you can ask the new owner to do the steps at the same link titled: "If you no longer have your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch"
 
You will probably also want to go here:
And under "More details" for the specific device "Sign off".
 
To clean up their photos in your account go here (when logged into the correct account, of course, and the clean-up is probably easier on a computer if you have access to one): 
Their photos will PROBABLY be MOSTLY in one or more blocks (ranges) but be careful not to delete any of your own photos.  Work slowly and deliberately on the clean-up.
 
It is always a good idea to store important images in more than one place / tool.  My photos are in Google Photos, on my laptop, and on multiple external disk drives (not connected to any computer or network).

Can you try clearing the cached & stored data as the first troubleshooting step?
I suggest you clear the cached & stored data of the Google Photos app & then reinstall the app.
You can do that through these steps.
  • On your Android phone, open the Settings.
  • Tap Apps and notifications.
  • Tap Show all apps.
  • Tap Google Photos.
  • Tap Storage and cache.
  • Tap Clear storage.
  • Next, uninstall the Google Photos app. 
  • Power off the phone & then restart.
  • Install the latest version of the Google Photos app through the Play Store.
Log into your profile & see whether that helps overcome the current problem.

Occasionally, downloaded video only plays sound.  It is visible in Google Photos though, seemingly in a reduced size format.   It appears this way for days, weeks, sometimes months, without every correcting itself.

I have seen a lot of other posts on this, but there is never a legitimate response.

This has nothing to do with video age, codecs, QuickTime, the way it is downloaded, uploaded, device settings, caches, or otherwise.

Something is obviously mucking this up on Google servers.

Example from just yesterday:

I captured 5 videos within minutes of each other.  All were of the same subject and about the .

4 of them are just fine and download perfectly.  One of them does not.  The download only contains sound.

In the series, it is the 4th.  Video 1 = Fine, Video 2 = Fine, Video 3 = Fine, Video 4 = Problem, Video 5 - Just Fine.

This aberration can be converted through a 3rd party application, though with seriously reduced quality.

A REAL answer to this ongoing problem / question would certainly be appreciated.

PS ...  If you are going to respond with some nonsense that I have already mentioned is obviously NOT the problem, please do not waste my time or yours.  That is not helpful to anyone.

Make sure that "Back up & sync" is enabled in the Google Photos settings of your phone.
 
 
Go here on your computer: https://photos.google.com/u/0/  Make sure that you are logged on to the same Google Account as in the Google Photos settings on your iPhone.
 
Google Photos and ~iCloud Photo Library~ use different approaches to data management and should not be use on the same device.
 
It is always a good idea to store important images in more than one place / tool.  My photos are in Google Photos, on my laptop, and on multiple external disk drives (not connected to any computer or network).

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your post.
 
You can follow these steps to move the pictures to the SD card using the Google Photos app, 
  • Tap on the Library view.
  • Tap the desired folder under Photos on the device.
  • Select photos by long pressing, then tap others after a tick confirms the first selection. You can also long-press and slide down while still in pressed condition to select a range of pictures.
  • Tap the three-dot menu top right
  • Tap Move to folder
  • Tap New SD folder, type a folder name, then tap Create
Note that if the photos are in the Google Photos cloud, this will not remove them from the Photos.
Further, even if you do not select this new SD folder for Backup & sync, any content in that will still be removed if deleted using the Google Photos app.
