I made a Google Photos backup to SSD and all of the photos display as files rather than displaying as photo images they way the do in Google photos.  Is there a way to either transfer the photos to display as photos or bulk open the back up photo files to images?

The album will be deleted but the photos remain in the Photos tab.

Of course I read the message, but I obviously misunderstood by seeing albums and "where is the trash button?".
 
On my Android the trash button is still there. The lay-out on your screenshot is different too: I still have an empty album with + instead of the text "+ new album". On the screenshot I see on top a row "All" "Your albums"  "On device" and "S....." which I also do not recognize. What is more there? 
 
You may have a more recent version. My version is 5.79.0.430335708
 
You can still go to the trash via https://photos.google.com/trash

Hi Dallin,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Forum.

Could you please try uninstalling and reinstalling the Google Photos app to see if it helps in syncing the files? Also, make sure it is currently up to date.

If that doesn't help, I recommend trying these troubleshooting steps in a sequence and see if any help:
  • Do a force restart by holding the home and power buttons at the same time until the Apple boot logoappears.
  • If the application freezes or is not responding, you can force the app to close by holding the powerbutton until the red slider Slide to Power Off appears. Do not  slide the slider. Instead, hold the homebutton for 5 or 6 seconds, and you should be returned to the home screen.
Lastly, you can try the below mentioned steps if all else fails:
  • Go to Settings.
  • Turn on Airplane Mode.
  • Wait a few seconds, and turn it back off.
  • Tap on the Settings icon.
  • Select the General menu. 
  • Scroll to the bottom and tap on Reset.
  • Select Reset Network Settings.
  • The device will take a minute or so to reboot.
