Didn't realize the storage saver option SIGNIFCANTLY reduces photo quality. They're important photos, any way to get those photos back in its original quality or is it too late?

Answer:

Once compressed to "Storage saver" quality, there is no way back in Google Photos (logical: the idea is to save storage, thus the original is not kept), but don't you have the original anymore on the device ?

I used to have always have android phone's they always were destroyed one way or another. I was always able to keep track of my google account though so no problem except for the last time my password was reset not by me and I tried everything to get my account back I finally had to give up I even bought a new phone phone an expensive Samsung and it locked up on me after 20 minutes when I download the find me app. That cell phone co. would do nothing so I went to an other and now I have the first iPhone ever. I have tried to get pictures from Facebook and family through Facebook but I don't know what else to do I'm sure I'm missing something but I just can't figure it out I have had to get a new google account email address and everything that follows. So when I checked google photos today, I noticed I was missing a lot of pictures. I went to my trash and found that all the missing photos had been deleted. I noticed that the photos that remained matched either the photos I had on my computer or my google drive. I figured that backup and sync had run recently and had removed items not found on my computer or drive. Except that Don't remove from everywhere is set.' Meaning that even if it's been deleted from local, it should stay in photos. I also noticed that there were now random photos from 2012, it looked like class notes. The only change I've made recently is to sync my documents with Google drive. Luckily I was able to recover all photos, but I'm worried it'll happen again

Answer:

Hello Sarah,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Community.

Since there isn't any setting in Backup & sync tool that Photos App or web version of Google Photos would delete the photos on its own, it would be great if you can share a screenshot of the Backup & sync tool settings page. Also, please ensure you mask any personal and/or account information in the screenshot that you'll share.

Keep me posted.

Best,
Sonya

Answer:

I just found almost TEN THOUSAND photos in my trash for no reason. Totally random ones, too!

I took 1,205 photos while in Las Vegas, and recently noticed that only 33 of them were in my Google Photos library, with the rest being in Trash. I had photos from the day we got our dog as a puppy in 2002, as well as an antique car show we were at that same day. One of the two photos of my sister holding the puppy was still there, the other one in Trash, along with maybe half of the Model T photos. ALL of those photos were in my Google Photos library before.

I have had to upload my entire library of nearly 2TB of photos on three separate occasions now. First when I did the initial upload, again when my installation of Windows became corrupted and I moved to an SSD (photos were always in the same spot on a secondary drive though), and a third time when a Windows Update made Backup & Sync completely forget who I was or any of my settings or list of already-uploaded files.

On that note, Google, can't you like...checksum a file and compare the local copy to the server's, so I don't have to freaking upload several terabytes over a crummy 12Mbps Comcast link multiple times, just so the server can compare the newly-uploaded file to the one it already has?? It takes more than a WEEK for this to happen, yano.

And before you ask, yes I am doing everything I should be doing. I am an IT professional, so please don't be asking me the dumb questions. Plus, REGARDLESS of my settings on my local machine, there is no reason that nearly 10k randomly-selected photos should have disappeared into my Trash like that. Even if I DID move computers, change cell phones, or even move files off my SD card and onto my H:\\ drive (yes I have eight physical drives - 2 optical, 4 hard disk, 1 solid state disk - all internal; and 1 hard disk external), that still does not explain how a huge amount of random photos suddenly got trashed, while others from the same date did not, especially when I have not TOUCHED the original archival folders they came from in YEARS. I have added a drive - they were originally uploaded from a folder on G:\\ and now they are in the same exact root directory structure on H:\\, the ONLY thing different was the drive letter but then I had to go re-upload everything because it doesn't appear to just checksum things first.

Explanation please?

Answer:

@User 1079....
I understand your frustration, and I am sorry to add a bit more: this is a user-to-user forum and Google Photos has no live support. You can send feedback directly to the Photos team, but I am afraid that is one-way.
  1. At the top left, open the Menu , then select Send feedback.
Just one question: cannot the files be restored from the trash ?

Answer:

Yeah no kidding. I wanted to see if anyone knows why this bullshit happened for seemingly no reason.

Yes I can restore from trash, although you can only restore 1500 at a time so I had to keep restoring until they were all back. I got them all back, I hope. Because the trash gets emptied after 60 days, and if I hadn't caught it, they'd all be gone. Who even knows if I already lost others as a result.

Answer:

OK I understand, but have no idea why these things happen. Many experienced similar issues because they deleted on some device and did not realize that everything may be "synced". If you can exclude that I have no answer.

Answer:

Okay, but with all due respect, if you don't know why that happened then don't reply to my question.

These are photos from 2002 onwards, uploaded from a hard drive, not originally stored on any other device, and certainly never "deleted". They are random photos missing out of albums and dates taken - some are still there, and some were found in Trash. I have not restructured my original folders in years - either they all are there or they all are missing. I have never removed these nearly 10,000 random photos manually, from any device. And I am well aware the fact about deleting on one device removes from all. That's not what happened here, I am a very tech-savvy person, I work in the IT industry, and I used to work for BestBuy Mobile. I have a very thorough understanding of the way mobile devices and Google apps work. There is literally no reason this should have happened.

Now, if someone knows of a glitch with Google or has some other explanation, please come forward. What I'm not looking for is a show of hands as to who doesn't have the answer...

Answer:

This also happened to me. I had a few hundred pictures end up in my trash that I did not touch or do anything with. I was able to restore them all but had I not noticed I am worried that these would have been permanently deleted after the 60 days expired. I have no helpful reply, I just want it known that this problem is not isolated to just one person.

Answer:

The only reason I began to look for the missing photos was because I noticed that my custom gmail background was no longer working as that photo some how ended up in the trash. I submitted a question to google but have yet to hear a reply. I'm so glad I found them before they were deleted. I would have lost these forever had I not checked!

Answer:

"I would have lost these forever had I not checked!"
That confirms what we keep telling people: you MUST have a back-up. No system is safe.

Answer:

This thread is mighty scary.

A few months ago I feared something like what's been described by so many photo storage customers in this discussion, so I transferred many thousands of my Google-stored photos to a couple of external hard drives.

After a trip to Norway and other European nations, I went looking for several videos. They were no longer videos, just the opening shot and two frames. It was a sorry state of affairs.
