I have a constant notification badge (that I've had for months) on the Google Photos app that won't go away.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling. I've tried going through every album to make sure there wasn't something I was missing.

There is no listing of Google Photos under my phone's notifications settings. 


When going to Google Photos> Settings> Notifications> System notification settings, there is no option for turning on/off badges.


There appears to be NOTHING that is causing this badge to be here, but it simply won't go away.

For me this happened because when I installed the app I disabled notifications. Reinstall while allowing notifications and it shows up in  notifications setting menu and you can also turn off badges.

Scroll down to the list of apps - select "See all" - select Photos - move the switch to disable

Same here. Stuck at 12.  On iPhone there's no notification setting for google photos for some reason.  I tried going online and clearing everything out but it doesn't remove the badges that are already above the app.

iPhone  tap on app, look for red dot tap on that, you can undo something that might have been attempted to install, change or create something in app.  I kept taping to undo something I must have tried to change or install  by mistake the day before.
When I deleted or canceled enough items it went away.

Uninstall.  Reinstall.  Allow notifications when box pops up after pressing or opening app. Then go back into google settings within the app and turn off allow notification. It finally took it off when I did the above steps

Google Photos never uploads the same picture multiple times.
What we see as duplicates have some differences in file format or metadata.
Additionally, if you have activated Raw + JPEG capture or bracketing in your phone app, that would create duplicates.
 
Regrettably, Google Photos doesn't provide any means to remove the apparent duplicates. You have to search those manually.
 
However, you will find some tips in the following article compiled by experts with comprehensive experience on how to avoid duplicate photos & how to remove those.

Regretfully, your query is not related to some feature in the Google Photos app.
 
Did you make some changes through the Settings -> Chats -> Media visibility in WhatsApp?
Nevertheless, WhatsApp hides the media folder from visibility to other apps usually.
But, you will find directions on how to unhide that on WhatsApp FAQ pages.
 
Additionally,
I suggest you use some file explorer app to view the media content on your phone. If your phone has none, please install the "Files" app by Google. Next, ensure in the setting of the app visibility of hidden files. Then search all the media folders for a hidden file of zero byte size. Delete that file & that should resolve your problem.

Sagrika, if the photos are not showing on photos.google.com , then it means you didn't have auto backup and sync enabled :(
 
I think it will be better to contact the service centre to try and recover those photos
