I've been using some form of Google Photos for a long time now.  Started with Picasa and during that time I had a few items duplicated.  Then I used Google Photos Backup and then yet another version of all of the files were uploaded again.  Now I'm using Backup and Synce because the other two stopped working and I have yet another copy of the same photos uploaded (still uploading by-the-way, 5 days later).

  1. Why isn't the replacement product smart enough to not upload the same images (same filename, same exif data)
  2. Why hasn't the "find duplicates" feature that was in Picasa migrated to the replacement apps?
  3. How do I get rid of duplicates?
  4. How do I stop duplicates from uploading in the future?
  5. Why isn't there a linux version of any of these apps?

I was able to get Picasa and Photos Backup running on linux using wine but that stopped working so now I'm forced to use this new application and it's taking much longer than the previous to upload my images (most, if not all of which are already there)

I'm also a longtime Linux user and I've been patiently waiting for a legit Linux version as well. It just doesn't seem like that's near the top of the priority list. I find that odd, though, considering the company's use of a Linux kernel in Android, and the worldwide popularity of that Linux-based OS... So, for now it's just more waiting and crossing your fingers for an eventual release. I got frustrated with all the Wine ridiculousness, so I gave up trying to maintain that. 
 
As for your other questions:
 
Why isn't the replacement product smart enough to not upload the same images (same filename, same exif data)
 
Actually, it is supposed to be smart enough. The software examines file name, size, and EXIF data to determine if it's a duplicate. If any of that is different, the image will be uploaded. 
 
Are you certain duplicates are actually being uploaded? Have you checked the Google Photos website? The software scans all the pictures and examines them, and many users mistake the scanning for uploading when it's really not being uploaded. 
 
Why hasn't the "find duplicates" feature that was in Picasa migrated to the replacement apps?
 
Great question. But, there's no answer right now. This feature is one of the most frequently requested, so I'm hoping it will be added in a future update. Keep your fingers crossed, but don't hold your breath. I suggest you use the Submit Feedback option to let developers know you want this. Believe it or not, they do actually read and consider feedback from users. 
 
How do I get rid of duplicates?
 
Since the "find duplicates" feature isn't here yet, there's no easy way I know of to do this, short of scrolling through your library and manually selecting them. However, you should be able to search by file name, so if the duplicates contain the same file names this could make it easier to filter for them. 
 
How do I stop duplicates from uploading in the future?
 
Like I said, duplicates shouldn't be uploaded. But, if they really are uploaded then the only thing you can do is move them to a different folder that's not selected for backup. Once you've confirmed those pictures have been uploaded (by visiting the website and confirming their presence) move them to another folder and they won't be re-uploaded.

I've found uploading pictures from a desktop (running Linux, of course) works best if you simply upload via the website directly, rather than trying to use software. I just open Nautilus and select the pics I want to upload, then drag them onto the Google Photos website page and it initiates the upload. 
 
Of course, your upload speed has a lot to do with how long it takes. Have you checked your upload speed lately? Go to speedtest.net and find out how fast you're uploading. A slower connection, combined with hundreds of large image files, equals a very long wait time. 
 
My download speed is phenomenal, but my upload speed is just mediocre, so for me it sometimes takes awhile when I'm uploading dozens of 24MP DSLR pics that average around 13MB apiece. 
 
 
And obviously your computer's processing power will have an impact as well. My processor is pretty solid and I've got a ton of RAM, yet uploading 25 pics from my DSLR took about 5 minutes. 
 
 
Anyway, sorry to get carried away. All I can suggest is that you check your settings, consider some minor modifications like I said, and it should eventually work itself out. Hopefully.

How to delete duplicates:
Google photos backup duplicates should be next to each other except when date & time was changed. So, you can find them and delete them manually.
If the upload dates are different (e.g. if you uploaded long ago via Desktop Uploader, and now again to Google Photos), it is easier to delete the duplicates. In https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_ where they are sorted by upload date (latest on top). Uploads from Desktop Uploader do not appear there at all. Then, hovering over the date with your mouse and tick inside the small circle which appears you can select all photos uploaded on that date, or in batches of a maximum of 500. Review and deselect any individual photos which you need to keep, then move the duplicates to the trash.
How to avoid duplicate in the future:
1. Get a Fresh Settings or Fresh Start to Any Software/Hardware Changes.
2. Upload Google Photos Manually.

I'm completely amazed that after so many years, there is no way to locate and remove duplicate photos. The common remark that google photos shouldn't upload duplicates is gratuitous. Everyone please stop saying this. We've read it many times. Reading it many more times doesn't fix the problem or prevent it from happening in the first place. For whatever reason(s), google photos often uploads duplicate photos. In my case, it might be due to changing mobiles, because I've done that several times, like everyone. The reality is that in my hundreds of photos, there are a lot of duplicates with the exact same file name, size, everything. It would take hours to manually go through them. Google, please stop telling us that this should not be happening. Please fix your application to prevent duplicates and also provide a mechanism for users to search for duplicates and remove them.

 On the web, I can see the photos in my google account archives. 
I can see the photos and videos created by the assistant but under the "Photos" tab its all grey.

5. Like I said, I only log in to my mailbox on my mobile phone and laptop. All photos are synced to Google's Google Photos via my mobile phone. I can't search for them on Google Drive by any means, because I know that they have been deleted and these behaviors are malicious because I lost my laptop and phone. So I can only provide a specific time, all photos from May 12th to August 1st are deleted. I need to retrieve these photos, they are very important to me.

6. Because these photos are very important, I have not shared them with others. I can only be very sure that they are being synced to the cloud of Google Photos, like I said, because I have a very good habit of backing up files , photos. Of course, this is also because Google's service is really great, very safe and fast, for me.

Using the Free Up Space feature in the Google Photos app will only remove pictures from your phone if they've already been successfully backed up and uploaded to the cloud. All other pictures will remain untouched on your device. Nothing will be deleted from your Google Photos library. 
 
If you manually delete pictures from your phone (not via the Free Up Space feature), they may disappear from your Google Photos library under certain conditions, also depending on which app you used to delete them. 
 
For example:
-- Deleting pics using the Google Photos app will cause them to also be deleted from your Google Photos library. (You will get popup warnings explaining exactly what will happen when you delete a picture.)
-- Deleting pics using your phone's stock gallery app, or a third-party gallery app, will not cause them to be deleted from your Google Photos library.
-- Deleting pics using a file browser app will not cause them to be deleted from your Google Photos library. 
 
Basically, the only way pictures get deleted from Google Photos is if you manually and intentionally delete them. What often happens, however, is that users see their pictures in the Google Photos app on the phone and assume that this means those pictures have been uploaded and backed up. This is not always the case, though. 
 
Just because a picture is visible in the Google Photos app on your phone does not mean it's been backed up to the cloud. The Photos app is capable of displaying pictures that are both online and on the phone. So, just because you see a picture in the app doesn't mean it's been uploaded. This is because there are often several folders on your device that contain pictures, and not all of those folders are set to automatically get backed up. 
 
You should check in the settings of the Google Photos app and see what folders are set to get backed up. To be safe, just turn on all of them. You can also see those same folders by tapping Device Folders in the sidebar menu on the left side when in the Google Photos app. Any folder thumbnail that shows a little cloud with a strikethrough line is not set to get backed up.

When you delete a picture from Google Photos, it will also be deleted from your phone. It's supposed to work like this. Any time you delete a picture from either the Google Photos app or website, there's a popup box that appears telling you that you're about to delete the pic from your Google account, synced devices, and other places it might be shared.

So, from what you describe it sounds like everything is working normally.

I take pictures in RAW format on my OnePlus 5T (It takes 16MP pictures) and back these up to Google Drive/Photos with "High Quality" upload mode. Since the photo resolution/size meets the "High Quality" criteria I was hoping to get these backed-up without taking up the Google Drive space quota.

When freeing up space I removed a lot of these pictures from my device hoping to still have access to .dng files. I have recently wanted to edit some of these photos, only to discover that upon deletion from the device .dng files get severely compressed - is there a workaround for this or a way to recover original photos?

  • When you upload RAW files with setting High Quality, they are ALWAYS converted to JPEG. JPEG files are much smaller.  

  • There is no way to recover the originals from Google Photos. Once converted Google discards the original RAW, because the aim of "High Quality" for them is to save storage. Note that on a screen you will not note any difference. 

  • If you want to keep the originals you can

          Unfortunately, it is not possible to download an entire album from your Google Photos to your device. Therefore, you can only download individual photos from your Google Photos.

          That being said, if you would like to see this feature implemented in the future, I recommend leaving feedbackabout it through the following steps:
          • Open Google Photos.
          • Click on Menu.
          • Select Send feedback.
          • Click on Send.
          The product team reviews the feedback regularly and uses it to better improve the product overtime.

          I've just been on a trip and took about 300 photos with my LG G6 phone in RAW format (.dng) and upload them to Google photos expecting to download them later to my computer to edit them.
          I was sick to find out that Google had converted them all to jpegs...! despite following all the steps and clicking in the "safely remove photos from your device". And impossible to find any information about why this happened, I really feel cheated! I hope people will read this and never trust Google to do any kind of back up...! :(

          That's a pity indeed, but not as worse as you think. 

          And you could have read in your backup-setting about High Quality (for free unlimited storage): "Perfect quality with reduced filesize" - so you could have tested what that means by downloading a few testpictures to your computer and then discover that it did become JPG-files of about 1 MB instead of 13 MB dng's 

          Be aware that a normal conversion from raw to jpg also would produce files which are about 10x smaller then the original raws, but their resolution still is 13 MP. So good enough for general use and prints on A4. 

          You only can send a feedback to Google via the main menu of the app that they should more clearly warn about this conversion in the backupsetting.

          This is a shame but Google only seems to guarantee backup  DNGs with the Pixel 3 uploads to Google Photos.  This works fine.  

          I shoot DNG plus JPG on the Pixel 3 but usually only deal with the JPGs on the phone and LR mobile.  Occasionally I want to print an image and that is the one usage of the DNGs that makes a difference since the JPGs artifacts are significantly reduced when processing in LR on the desktop and sending TIFF to print for large prints.  

          I just download the DNG file backed up in Google Photos into into the Pixel 3 then into LR mobile on Pixel 3 and eventually process it there or on the desktop before sending it to print. Using the outstanding JPGs for everything else seems more that adequate.

          I had read about the High quality compression, but my settings were, and still are, in Original (14.7 GB left) Full resolution that counts against your quota. And I also read in another Google support page that all dng files were supported, which is obviously not so that is why I feel robed.
          And yes, the jpegs have a good printing resolution, but I have lost all the editing possibilities that a raw file gives me (white balance, noise reduction, etc.) which I found to be essential when shooting with my not so perfect G6.

          And you could have read in your backup-setting about High Quality (for free unlimited storage): "Perfect quality with reduced filesize" - so you could have tested what that means by downloading a few testpictures to your computer and then discover that it did become JPG-files of about 1 MB instead of 13 MB dng's 

          Be aware that a normal conversion from raw to jpg also would produce files which are about 10x smaller then the original raws, but their resolution still is 13 MP. So good enough for general use and prints on A4. 

          You only can send a feedback to Google via the main menu of the app that they should more clearly warn about this conversion in the backupsetting.

          Thanks for posting in the Google Photos support Community.

          What happens when you share:
          1. Contacts with this icon  on their profile image use the Google Photos app. If you Send via Google Photos:​
            • They get an in-app notification.
            • Their profile image will be added to the album and will appear faded until they see the album.
            • You can only do this if you've interacted with them through Google services.
            • They may also appear with this icon  if their phone number is connected to their Google Account and you've added it to your Google Contacts.
          2. If you share to a phone number or email address:
            • They get a link to the album, by SMS or email, depending on how it was shared.
            • A generic profile image will be added to the album and will appear faded until they click the link to see the album.
            • If they join the album, their profile image will change into their Google Account profile image.
          3. When they see the album, you'll get an in-app notification.
          4. Anyone that has the shared link will be able to see the album. Learn how to change your sharing options.

          I do understand the inconvenience as your movies are being saved in vertical mode instead of landscape mode in your Google Photos app. Therefore, I recommend trying the steps below in sequence, this may help in fixing the issue:
          • Make sure your device is up-to-date.
          • Make sure the App is up-to-date.
          • Try restarting the App through the following steps:
            • Go to your App Settings.
            • Click stop on the afflicted App with the Force Stop button.
            • Wait a few seconds to make sure the App has stopped processing, and then attempt to re-start it.
          • Close the background running apps through the following steps:
            • Go to your App Settings.
            • Display the Active Apps on your device.
            • Select the App you wish to close and Force Stop it.
            • Repeat this step with all active Apps.
          • Try clearing your App cache through the following steps:

But, if you don't find it in Trash, probably it must have been deleted more that 60 days ago. Unfortunately, restoring your lost/deleted photos and videos from Trash is the last resort.

              Not clear what you are doing exactly: if downloading straight from photos.google.com in batches of about 500 you may encounter problems with old movies which stay in processing status at Google forever for completely unknown reasons (old unsolved complaints forever). So you only can prevent this by not including such sick videos in your selection and that will be very uncomfortable. 

              And Take-out will result in a hopeless garbage of many many dayfolders with separate metadata-files (json), but that does not mean that basic exif is taken from the files. Only descriptions typed on Google Photos are in these json-files, but if hardly done these textfiles are unimportant. 

              The OneDrive-app on phone merely will store the locally available files on that phone - not the files on the web only. 

              Conclusion: an almost hopeless task due to low quality Google design - certainly if you have 100K+ 

              Thereby is not clear why you want to switch to OneDrive unless you also have a subscription on Office-365 which includes 1 TB in MS-cloud.

              Google Photos is already private because it is secured with your Google Account credentials. It shouldn't be a case where some one else has the access to your Google Photos and Google Account, until you haven't shared your login credentials with anyone.

              I'd recommend changing your Google Account password to secure your account. To access your backed up photos log on to photos.google.com on your desktop computer (web) or Google Photos app on any other compatible device.

                Recently I have created a new account and one of the folders from another account has automatically appeared in it.
                After digging some time into the subject I've found out that it is whatsup folder and its coming up on all accounts I have on my phone.
                If I turn off sync for one account then it is off for other ones too.
                How to make sync settings different for each account on one device?

                Answer:

                There is no automatic transfer between account without very special settings and there a no folders on Google Photos, just virtual collections called "albums" created by you from library. 
                But you can have made a device folder for work-related pictures and you may haved moved pictures from the camera-folder into that work-folder. 
                However the app shows all what is present on phone and because the camerafolder is synced to your private-account, the pictures moved to the work-folder also are shown in your private account. 

                I don't know a simple solution to prevent this, but you can hide these pictures by archiving them. 

                Better to prevent such troubles by having a separate phone which is optimised for work.

                You might consider setting up a new user account.
                 
                Different user profiles are accessible since Android 4.2 where stroking down twice from the top of the screen shows a user icon which you can tap to see the Add user option. On newer devices you may have to go into Android settings: Users
                 
                 
                After creating a new user you can switch to it and set up a completely separate profile with it's own Photos and camera settings.  For example I can switch between Home and Work and the two have no common apps or settings.  Switching is quick and would allow two Photo accounts to be used completely independently.

                It looks like you're trying to restore some photos from Google Photos. If yes, please check if the photos are present in the Trash of Google Photos and restore them through the below steps:
                • On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app .
                • At the top left, tap Menu.
                • Click on Trash.
                • Touch and hold the photo or video you want to recover.
                • At the bottom, tap Restore. The photo or video will be back:
                  • In your phone.
                  • Into the "Photos" section of the app.
                  • Into any albums it was in.
                But if you've already deleted the photos from the Trash from your Google Photos, there is no other way to restorethem. 

                That being said, if you would like to see this feature implemented in the future, I recommend leaving feedback about it through the following steps:
                • Open Google Photos.
                • Click on Menu.
                • Select Send feedback.
                • Click on Send.

                I am having 2 issues with editing on Photos within the android app -

                - Whenever I edit an image, a copy is saved which has a different time stamp (an hour is added on every time I edit and save) thus moving the image copy along the timeframe from when it was actually taken. My tablet has the correct UK time on it.

                - I believe this is implemented, but ....ONLY a copy is saved by default. There is no-longer a "SAVE" option. Can we please have the option to "save" returned and not be forced to have only a copy saved (with the wrong timestamp). Even a toggle to enable "save" as an option in settings, would be extremely helpful.

                I'm not getting this behaviour on my other android device - HTC One mobile - here when I edit, no extra image is produced, and time stamp remains the same. 

                The dates aren't changed - just the time by one hour later, on my tablet. Even with the tablet, it's not occurring every time I edit. It's inconsistent. I've deleted cache, data, uninstalled & reinstalled. Odd.
