I was able to take a picture of my kids home work using my Android phone and then turn around and get the photo from Google photo and submit the work through Google classroom on his laptop. But now I cannot do that anymore. The picture is not on Google photo until hours later. I am not sure if I have accidently changed some settings on my phone or Google has changed the upload timing. If this is the way it works today, is there anything I can do to force an immediate upload from camera to Google photo ?

Yes you can:

1. Select one or more photos or videos
2. Tap 3-dots > Back-up now (or equivalent text - I translated)

As an alternative you can try to add photos directly to an album. When it does not work you can first upload them and then use this method.

3. Tap "Album" to add them to a new album
   or tap on the album you want to add them to

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your post.

 

The free up option removes the originals of pics from the phone.

That creates space to capture new photos.

Restoring the backed up pictures would be defeating the whole purpose of the free up space exercise.

 

To bring back the pics to your phone's gallery either, you can download photos one by one.

Regrettably, there is no option to download the photos in bulk.

 

Alternatively, you can install the Google One app. There is a one time option to restore up to two hundred most recent photos to the device.

However, that will not restore the local folder structure.

There is no requirement to join Google One. The option is available to everyone. 

However, the method may not be helpful to recover something when the count is more than two hundred.

 

Or, you can arrange for a bulk download by visiting the link https://takeout.google.com/.

Select the Google Photos app for data download.

Once the file is ready, you will get an email. Access that & unzip all the attachments into your phone's gallery. However, you have to ensure your phone has free space more than the size of the downloaded zip file.

 

That will bring everything to your phone.

You can check to see if they have not been permenantly deleted by looking in the "trash" tab of Google Photos. If they are there you can select the items you would like to restore and do so.
