Are these in your camera roll or somewhere else on the device?

If you go into the Google Photos app > Device folders, you;ll see other folders in there that may not be automatically backing up to Google Photos. There maybe a downloads folders, Whatsapp folder etc depending on what apps your use. You have the options to back up the folders automatically should you wish, or you can actually go into the folder where the photo you want to back up is, open the photo, tap the 3 dots and choose the option Back up now. You'll be able to tell if that folder is backing up by the toggle inside the folder.

Thanks for this. For some reason those photos, the first taken on the phone when it was new, were not in the "Camera" folder that Google Photos was looking at. I have now put them back and they're backed up.

I encountered the problem today. A sequence of 4 photos taken yesterday were not backed up to Google Photos - the photos immediately before and after were. The missing photos are not in the archive or bin.

Google Photos reported backup complete. I tried selecting the photos and forcing them to backup, but that didn't accomplish anything.

In the end I emailed the photos to myself and uploaded them manually via my PC browser.

It does make me wary of deleting photos on my phone which may not have been backed up

I have backup and sync running on my PC which uploads my photos to Google Drive. These are then automatically added to Google Photos. While this mostly works, some photos are corrupted when viewed in Google Photos, on all devices, and display a grey box over some portion of the image. This happens with around one out of every hundred photos. If I download the original photo from Google Drive it is fine. If I download the same photo from Google Photos it is corrupted. If I reupload the same photo to Google Drive it transfers correctly to Google Photos the second time. It appears to be only the transfer process between Google Drive and Google Photo which is occasionally breaking. Interestingly enough, the face detection is still working even on corrupted photos where the faces are not visible. I can find no way to resync the photo once it has been corrupted, even though there is a perfectly fine copy sitting in my Google Drive.

This is driving me mad, and effectively making Google Photos useless as a photo sharing and storage service.

It looks like these photos are corrupt. That exceptionally happens in any system, but there are too many here. Something must have happened somewhere in the workflow. I know that this answer does not help much, but I have no solution, and hope that you have backed them up somewhere. A real backup is the only safeguard against loss of photos.

You can drag and drop the original onto Google photos and that works. But then you cannot easily delete the corrupt version because it deletes the original on the "shared device". Is there a way to just delete the Cloud copy?

I've been having this problem for a few months. In my case, the solution is to pause Google backup and sync before I copy the photo from my SD card to the PC. After the copy is complete, unpause and the photos are backed up fine. Yes, it's a pain.

My theory is that Google backup and sync is reading the photos before the files are completely copied to the PC. What should happen is the files are locked until the copy is complete but in Windows XP at least, there was a low-level replication interface that could be used to bypass this lock.

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your post.

To convert a picture to PDF, please tap to open that & slide up.
AT the rightmost edge below the pic, you will find an option to print. Tap on that.
Then, it will show all the available printers. A print to PDF option will be there by default.
Select the right size of the paper, margins etc., & tap print.
That will save the picture as a PDF.

That is not logical unless you accidently did remove a lot in the Google-app on your smartphone.

But albums can't exist without a complete library, so maybe you are a victim of some new fancy blocker in your browser. If you are in Chrome you don't need that nonsense.

Cleaning-up the browser history and cookies monthly also is a very goor habit.

Else no logical explanation and Picasa can't do any harm anymore because it is disconnected from Google.

But it still can be used to prepare neat albums.

Unfortunately it is assumed to be human error unless there is evidence to indicate otherwise and the Google Photos team do not offer a user facing support service to investigate the history of a user's account, so there is nothing we can do other than to ask you to check the following places.

1. Google Photos Help - Learn how to find your photos

2. Check your online account - photos.google.com

If your photos were successfully uploaded to your online Google Photos account they may be available there. Try visiting photos.google.com and searching for them. If you have more than one Google account, check all of them.

3. Check the Google Photos trash - photos.google.com/trash

Once you delete photos from your Google Photos account, they're moved to Trash for the next 60 days. If you deleted them by mistake you can always restore them from the Trash folder within those 60 days. Here's the link explaining how to recover them from Trash. If you have more than one Google account, check the trash for all of them.

If you accessed the Trash and manually sent the photos for permanent deletion, or if the 60 days expired, there is no way to recover them from Google Photos.

4. Check the Google Drive trash - drive.google.com/trash

If you deleted a file from the Drive trash you will need to contact a Drive Specialist directly to see if they can recover it:

In a browser, like Chrome, go to the Google Drive Help Center.
At the top right, click Contact us.
Choose your issue and how you'd like to contact us.

5. Review other options

if you previously used Picasa, visit picasaweb.google.com and search for your photos.
check get.google.com/albumarchive to see if there are any hidden albums containing posts to other Google apps
have you made any backups of the photos on your phone, camera, computer, or elsewhere?
there is a small chance that you can restore the photos using a recover deleted photos app (Android). I haven't used them myself so have no specific recommendations. There may well be more app options if you visit the appropriate app store and try other search terms. I don't see any similar apps on the iOS store, but you could check yourself.
If you ever shared the photos with anyone else, it's possible they may have a copy they could share back or send to you.

Good luck, unfortunately if you have looked at all the options and still can't find your photos then there are no other possibilities we can suggest, other than if you have a Google One account you can contact 1:1 Support

Hi. This should help. I restarted my pixel 5 and Google photos duplicates ALL my photos it was so annoying. I don't know why it happened but i figured out how to stop it. Go into Google photos info, force stop, clear cash, go into permissions and remove file access. Reopen Google photos and it'll give you a prompt to allow file access. Allow it and it should go back to working normally.

I want to re-backup pictures from phone in original size instead of high as I have now. I have therefore disconnected my phone's account to delete the pictures from Google Photos in the browser to thereafter reupload.

I think that the limit is 500 photos per batch. Can you try this? (I am not going to test it).

I am afraid it's too late, otherwise I would say: "don't do it". Google photos may be good for viewing everywhere and sharing, but not as backup. See Google Photos is NOT a "Backup" of Your Photos.

I keep the originals in a few other places (disks).
