My backup often gets stuck. What I do then is clear the cache and restart the app. If I'm lucky, it works after a while, if I'm not, it takes longer. This phenomenon first started the last time I switched phone, but still feels like a software issue, because after some time the backup works again. Please help.

Hi Pat,

Welcome to the Google Photos Product Help Forum.

We are mostly user volunteers here, and have no access to accounts, etc.

This seems to be the most comprehensive source of data on recovery of Gmail addresses.

Excerpt:
Lost Password Recovery. The recover process can be started in either of two ways:
Try all possible recovery emails and recovery phones which you have access to.  If possible, log into the recovery site from an IP address you have used previously.

Another thought, is that you MAY have saved your Google account password in the password management facility of a browser you don't use very often (Firefox, IE, Edge, Chrome...).  If you think this is a possibility you might search ~password management~ with the name of the specific browser.

You might find more expertise on recovering accounts in the Gmail support forum.

Answer:

Hi BelindaSue,

The same information that I told Pat applies.

To recover your photos from Google Photos you need to be using the Google Photos app and have the "Back up & sync" settings configured.   Google Photos really only cares about the Google Account (not the phone number).

If your photos are in Google Photos, they will be visible here:

Am about to upload a bunch of photos to Google photos app on/from my iphone 11 Pro photos.

Can't find out, when I do the upload (of photos from my iphone to google photos), if they will stay 'grouped' in their folders?

Don't really want to have to re-create new albums (as I believe they are called in googlephotos) and have to search through 1000's of photos to make new albums to mirror my iphone folders.

When I upgrade my phone, I'll lose all my old photos - hence the uploading to google and need to know about the folders issue first. I've toggled the 'favourites' option under Google Photo settings> Apple Photos> Sync favourites but I have other folders too I'd like to keep photos grouped under.

All articles I've found seem to be older from a few years ago and I believe Google have changed their Photos/drive so trying to ascertain what's correct as of now?

Hoping someone knows if googlephotos keeps the folders (with photos in) automatically when it uploads OR if it's possible to do afterwards? and if so, how?

Thank you in advance!

Answer:

@LelloBlue,

Sorry to say that all photos will be backed up to the main photos library and all iOS folder information will be lost. The only option will be to manually create albums and populate them yourself.

I am not an expert with iOS but would think it easier to use iCloud before upgrading your phone. Signing out of the old phone will leave the folders on iCloud and signing into the new phone should re-create the folders on the new device. There should be some advice with Apple support on how to do this.

Regards,
Peter

Question: Accidentally enabled "Create Google Photos folder in Google Drive". It's now deleting all my photos!

I accidentally enabled "Create Google Photos folder in Google Drive" option and it created a folder …

I accidentally enabled "Create Google Photos folder in Google Drive" option and it created a folder in my Google Drive and started pushing all my Google Photos there which I didn't really want. I simply deleted the Google Photos folder from my Google Drive and it went to the bin. Now when I go to my Google Photos's bin, all the photos that were in that Google Drive's folder are binned too.
I read in the Google Photos product that "if I delete a folder, it won't delete the pictures inside it". But that doesn't seem to work. All the pictures inside folders are getting deleted!

I'm worried that I'm going to lose all my backed up photos. How do I recover all of it in a clean way? I don't wish to lose even a single photo. Please help!

Answer:

If you delete from the Google Photos folder in My Drive:
  • If you delete individual photos or videos, they will be removed from Google Photos.
  • If you delete folders (including the Google Photos folder), photos and videos won't be deleted in Google Photos. This is to avoid deleting all your photos and videos by accident.
If you did exactly that it's weird indeed. I have no explanation.

"I'm worried that I'm going to lose all my backed up photos."
That's very well possible: many lost their photos because their only copy is also a working copy. In my dictionary that's not a backup. The "Backup & Sync" name is very misleading. I can only recommend to have a real backup (non-synced copy), just in case. Unfortunately that's not in Google's workflow.

Answer:

Thanks for the answer janvb.

I'm sure I haven't deleted the individual photos/videos, but I've deleted the Google Photos folder. But I see that all the photos and videos are being deleted (ending up in my Google Photos Bin). I'm observing that there are 2 processes going on:
  • Google Photos folder is still being created in my Google Drive (even after I disabled the option in Google Drive). I'm assuming that the workflow that has been triggered to copy the photos to my Google Drive has not ended - even after I have triggered to stop (by disabling the option).
  • Photos from my Google Photos folder in my Google Drive are ending up in my Google Photos Bin/Trash in batches. I'm assuming that there's a major flaw in their workflow! Deleting the whole Google Photos folder from Google Drive is actually deleting its contents in Google Photos.
"The "Backup & Sync" name is very misleading."  - I completely agree with you. The Google Backup and Sync tool is a nightmare.
"I can only recommend to have a real backup (non-synced copy), just in case." - Do you mean that its always good to have a local copy on my hard drive?

At this point, I'm clueless as to what's going on with my Google Photos account. I'm really looking forward for specific answers to these questions.
  • Does Google Photos ensure that the photos WILL be moved to trash before being completely wiped out from my account? If so, at least I have a chance to manually restore them in batches.
  • When would the workflow of copying the photos to my Google Photos folder in Google Drive come to an end?
  • When would the workflow of deleting the photos from my Google Photos account come to an end?
  • If there are good chances of losing my photos/videos from Google Drive, do I need to consider Google Photos as just a volatile/unreliable library of my photos/videos?

Answer:

Hi Jan, just to advise that I have just deleted my Google Photos folder and I am not seeing any photos in my Google Photos trash, all appears to be working normally.

@Amith, when things settle down you can restore any photos from the Google Photos trash and should be back to normal.

Answer:

Sorry Amith, we don't have the knowledge to provide specific answers as Google do not share specific knowledge with us. We can only share experiences as fellow users.

Answer:

@Amith
"Do I need to consider Google Photos as just a volatile/unreliable library of my photos/videos?"
If that is your only copy, I would say: YES. Only a single copy is NOT safe on any system. And Google keeps adding/removing/changing things which does not make it more safe.

"Do you mean that its always good to have a local copy on my hard drive?"
That is an option, but another cloud service will also do. If you create another Google account, share the library of your first acct with the new one, with the option of adding to the library of acct 2, you already have some safe kind of backup, at least against own mistakes. And if you select "High Quality" in acct 2 it's free.

Answer:

Late to the party here, but I just deleted the photos folder from my Google Drive. Now all my pics on Google Photos are being moved to the trash. :/ I'm recovering them all and it seems to be working but I really hope I didn't lose anything permanently. Screw Google and the way they put this together, seriously.

Question: Videos I filmed using camera are not playing some videos

Some of my videos are not playing, I get an error message "unable to play video" no reason given. This is happening with all the longer videos (> 10 minutes). In the gallery there's no thumbnail Image it's just blank white. The file sizes are still accurate (some 2.5gb - 4gb).

I'm unsure what the reason for this is.
I have tried clearing cache for gallery app, tried VLC player but no luck.

Quite unhappy as bought the phone for the camera and got a sharp price on boxing day sale (it's a week old).

Any help is much appreciated.

Answer:

You posted in "Android". Does that mean that the photo is uploaded from the device?
I have no experience with such big files, but is it possible that you see the device copy in the Google Photos app? To see the cloud copy you may have to go to https://photos.google.com/
Sorry if that makes no sense, but since no one replied I gave it a try.

Answer:

Addition to Jan
Big files from prof cameras often have a tag included that prevents Google from compressing that file to storage saver quality. This is an unsolved problem since years and no comment from Google as usual.
But if such a picture is edited on pc and then saved as a normal jpg-file, it will get uploaded via your browser in storage saver quality perfectly.
