Nevertheless, when you tap the delete icon in the Google Photos app, a warning appears telling you what will happen if you proceed.

On your phone, that message asks, "Remove from Google account & synced devices?"

When you attempt to manually empty the trash/bin in Google Photos, another warning appears that explains the consequences of permanently deleting those pictures and videos.
If you choose to proceed anyway, there is nothing that any of the volunteers in this forum can do to help you recover your pictures.

1. Items deleted from your photos.google.com are stored in trash for 60 days and then are Auto-Deleted from trash and can not be recovered.

2. Items deleted manually from photos.google.com/trash can not be recovered.

3. Items deleted from your YouTube Channel can not be recovered.

4. Items deleted from your Gmail are stored in trash for 30 days and then are Auto-Deleted from trash and can not be recovered.

5. Items manually deleted from Gmail trash can not be recovered.

6. Items deleted from your Google Drive will be stored in Drive Trash for 30 days and then be Auto-Deleted from Trash and can not be recovered.

(I do have them backed up in another hard drive) However, when I delete the original file it also deletes the google photo back up. I have already ensured that in the preferences i have chosen "do not remove items everywhere" but this doesn't make any difference. It still deletes the backup. I figure this only works when your doing the reverse, i.e deleting the backup and it wont delete the original. Don't remove items everywhere

If you delete a photo or video from Google Drive or Google Photos, it won't be deleted from your computer.
If you delete a photo or video from your computer, it won't be deleted from Google Drive or Google Photos.

But they don't talk about removing a lot of subfolders and that is what you want to do.

PS: if your "hardware backup" is synced, you also are in trouble.

If you have synced-down the Google Photos folder via the Drive-section in B&S and you delete there some files (bad files I presume :-), they will get deleted at https://photos.google.com

That's normal behavior and has nothing to do with that setting which is meant for the uploading part of B&S.

PS: the lost files probably are in the trash of Google Drive (https://drive.google.com/drive/my-drive) and can be recovered. Maybe also in the trash of https://photos.google.com and then they can be recovered there.

You have overloaded the bin and it is not clear to me if that also means that you need to pay first.

If you have passed your 15 GB free storage limit by, you will need to pay indeed for having 100 GB space - if possible for a short period. Then wait a few days and check if your storage space has gone up and then you can try to recover the files from bin gradually (one-by-one for safety).

If that is not possible, you can ask for Google support.

I do not think that you can transfer the ownership of your Google Photos. Google Photos is an integral part of the account.

No need to remove anything from Google Photos. I suggest you sign out of the Photos app by tapping on the 3 bar menu:> Your email:> Remove active account, repeat if more than one account listed. The app acts like a gallery now and you should only see photos which are on the device and you can safely delete them after making sure they are online at https://photos.google.com/ If they are you can safely reset your phone and when it is finished sign in to the photos app and you will see all your photos again,

The date on which I downloaded that. The picture carries the tag "Modified".
Date taken. That remains intact.

You are saying in some cases you are finding the date of download to be matching with the date taken. Can you please share a screenshot of that?

Photos which get the date of downloading did come from social media like Whatsapp who strip date taken and all additional data about the camera and the location.

If downloaded to computer, you can change the wrong dates in the Windows Filemanager into the dates shown on Google Photos. These are not correct either, but in many cases quite close to the original shooting date & time.

Ugly, but a worldwide pitfall due to bad design of popular third party apps.
