good evening welcome to Washington I'm Bret Baier as president Trump's top
diplomat meets with the Saudi King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin
Salman a Turkish official says there is new evidence tonight that a Saudi
journalist was killed inside the kingdom's consulate in Turkey it is an
international incident that puts the relationship between the US and a key
Middle Eastern ally in peril chief White House correspondent John Roberts leads
us off tonight from the North Lawn good evening John good evening to you Brett
there's no thing no question that things are tense tonight but after his meetings
with the Saudi leadership today the Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he
believes that there is a commitment to determine all of the facts in this case
and ensure accountability even at the highest levels what if any involvement
the Saudi leadership had and the disappearance of journalist Jamal
khashoggi is a central issue for the White House President Trump tweeting
today that he got yet another denial from the royal family just spoke with
the crown prince of Saudi Arabia who totally denied any knowledge of what
took place in their Turkish consulate he has already started and will rapidly
expand a full and complete investigation into this matter answers will be
forthcoming shortly Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met twice with Crown Prince
Mohammed bin Salman today also speaking with the Saudi King Salman tomorrow
Pompeo will travel to Turkey for meetings with officials there in an
exclusive interview with Fox businesses trish regan to air at eight o'clock
tonight president Trump indicated any
involvement by Saudis leaders would be very serious indeed we're all looking at
it together but Turkey and Saudi Arabia looking at it very strongly and it
depends whether or not the king with the crown prince knew about it
some members of the president's own party aren't waiting for the results of
an investigation to implicate Saudis 31 year old heir apparent known by his
initials NBS this guy is a wrecking ball he had this guy murdered in a consulate
and Turkey and to expect me to ignore it I feel used and abused at the NBS figure
is to me toxic he can never be a world leader
world state the relationship between the United States in Saudi Arabia is
critically important if Saudi Arabia turned off the crude oil spigot gasoline
could hit seven dollars a gallon the Saudis are buying a hundred and ten
billion dollars in u.s. arms providing thousands of American jobs and the US
needs Saudi Arabia as a crucial bulwark against Iran administration and I think
wisely that had built them as a key linchpin against Iran and their
ambitions and their in their expansion in the region that's endangered now if
they did this it makes it impossible for us to work with them closely in the
short term until something is done about it the president's critics have accused
him of running cover for Saudi Arabia in part to protect his own financial
interests president Trump denied the charge
tweeting for the record I have no financial interests in Saudi Arabia or
Russia for that matter Democrat Adam Schiff again taunted the president in a
tweet reminding Don junior in 2008 Russians make up a pretty
disproportionate cross-section of a lot of our assets Trump in 2015 Saudi Arabia
they buy apartments from me they spend 40 million 50 million dollars the
president does have a long history of past financial dealings with the Saudis
including yacht and real estate sales even more than a quarter million dollars
that Saudi lobbyists dropped at the Trump DC hotel in 2017 now we're hearing
more from President Trump about all of this late this afternoon in an interview
with The Associated Press President Trump said that Saudi Arabia being
blamed for the disappearance of the Saudi the Saudi journalist Jim
al-khalili is another case of guilty until proven innocent Brett all right
John thank you you may have noticed you're seeing a lot more of President
Trump these days and a lot less of his media people that is no accident
Fox News media analyst and host of Fox's media buzz Howard Kurtz tells us it's
all part of the president's new approach
is I never knew how dishonest the media was I I really mean it that sentiment
from President Trump is no surprise but he said it on 60 minutes as part of an
extraordinary campaign to seize the media megaphone during the midterms
insiders say it's the president not his advisors pushing this strategy whether
he's appearing on for Fox shows this past week holding news conferences or
taking questions from reporters at least 29 times in the past month as when he
refused to pay a promised $1,000,000 to Elizabeth Warren for taking a DNA test
on her Native American ancestry during yesterday's hurricane briefing in
Georgia today with trish regan you know you have a lot of people running hearing
names that are shockingly bad but they're nasty the Blitz has obliterated
Sarah Sanders daily briefings with just one in the past five weeks I always
think if you can hear directly from the president and the press has a chance to
ask the President of the United States questions directly that's infinitely
better than talking to me she asked me to come back into the White House when
Trump heard New York magazines Olivia newsy was reporting on possible tensions
between him and White House chief of staff John Kelly he had her called in
for a presidential interview the president wants to trumpet what he sees
is a good stretch from the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation to declining
unemployment to turkey's release of an American pastor Oh while Robert Muller
is observing a pre-election law and the strange visit by Kanye West shows the
one time reality show star knows how to vary the programming the president is
also generating coverage through Twitter taking flack for saying after a judge
tossed out stormy Daniels suit against him great now I can go after horse face
it might seem odd for a president who's called much of the media the enemy of
the American people to be engaging the enemy but Donald Trump knows how to
exploit the press when it suits him Brett Howie thank you as expected a key
figure in the Justice Department activity surrounding the 2016
presidential campaign refused to answer questions from lawmakers today chief
intelligence correspondent Harrods is on Capitol Hill to tell us
why the co-founder of fusion GPS the firm behind the anti-trump dossier
refused to answer those questions and what it really means for this
congressional investigation good evening Catherine Thank You Brett
and good evening the man who House committee Republicans think has the
answers about the anti-trump dossier and how it was used to secure a surveillance
warrant during the presidential campaign today took the fifth mr. Simpson why are
you taking the fifth mr. Simpson are you facing legal or criminal
exposure mr. Simpson why is there a discrepancy between your earlier
testimony and that of Justice Department official Bruce or Republicans called
pardon me Simpson's lawyer called out committee Republicans for forcing him to
testify on Capitol Hill today when they knew he would not answer their questions
about the dossier sources and his contacts with or this committee would
make Senator Joseph McCarthy proud like Senator McCarthy this committee has
largely conducted its business through secret confidential interviews and
depositions binding witnesses and their counsels to silence while the members
walk outside to all of you the media and the public and selectively leaked from
those interviews to tell you what they want you to
