U.S. President Donald Trump says it's possible he could be "friends"... with Kim Jong-un

one day.

This following a tweet,... where Trump said he would never insult the North Korean leader,...

in response to a Pyongyang statement describing the U.S. president as an "old lunatic."

Yu Joonhee reports.

President Trump sent out a tweet... while in Vietnam for the APEC summit,... saying

he wouldn't call North Korean leader Kim Jong-un "short and fat"... following an insult directed

at him from Pyongyang's foreign ministry.

When asked... if he could see the possibility of him being friends with Kim,... he said

there could be a chance.

"That might be a strange thing to happen but it's a possibility.

If it did happen it could be a good thing, I can tell you, for North Korea, but it could

also be good for a lot of other places and be good for the rest the world."

Trump has traded threats and insults with Kim in the past... amid escalating tensions

over North Korea's nuclear and missile programs.

Having previously called him "Rocket Man"... the U.S. president also warned the North Korean

leader... he was putting himself in peril and grave danger... during a speech last Tuesday

at South Korea's National Assembly.

However,... both sides may now be backing down somewhat... with Secretary of State Rex

Tillerson saying dialogue could soon take place...

adding the U.S. has "two or three" channels available to send messages to the North Korean

regime.

North Korea,... for its part,... has also refrained from military provocations in recent

weeks.

It remains to be seen... if the brief lull in tensions... could lead to talks between

Washington and Pyongyang... that could pave the way for formal negotiations in the future.

A White House official has defended President Trump's tweet... describing North Korean leader

Kim Jong-un as "short and fat",... saying he was simply responding in kind to Pyongyang's

earlier remarks.

This,... according to White House senior adviser Kellyanne Conway on Sunday... who emphasized

North Korea had insulted President Trump first.

She went further by adding,... the comments should be taken in full context... and that

it was part of Trump's efforts to contain the regime.

Earlier,... North Korea's foreign ministry had released a statement... calling Trump

a crazy old person,... prompting the U.S. leader to fire off a tweet in response.

Putin and Trump vow to MERGE POWERS and destroy ISIS 'once and for all' - Duration: 4:28.

Putin and Trump vow to MERGE POWERS and destroy ISIS 'once and for all'

Speaking during a summit of Asian Pacific leaders in Vietnam, President Trump said the Russian president was "insulted" by claims his country had interfered in the US election.

And he said it would be "a great thing to have a good relationship with Russia" because it could help tackle rogue state North Korea.

In a joint statement, both leaders said "successful US-Russia" military efforts have "dramatically accelerated" Islamic State's territorial losses.   "These efforts will continue until the final defeat of Islamic State," added the statement.

They agreed that "there is no military solution" to the bloody six-year civil war and committed to bringing the Syrian president Bashar al-Assad to the peace process in Geneva.

Russia has run a major bombing campaign in Syria since 2015 when it stepped in to support Assad's fight against rebels – some of them US-backed – and tipped the conflict in his favour.

With the two nations backing competing factions in the conflict, last night's agreement over the next steps towards peace was said to be significant.

While Russian support has kept Assad in power, helping President Putin expand Russian influence across the region, the US is now seeking to have a louder voice in any plan to help the nation recover from years of civil war.

Though there was no official bilateral meeting, Mr Trump and Mr Putin were seen sharing cordial handshakes and brief conversations three times during the summit.   Afterwards President Trump said the agreement would save "tremendous numbers of lives".

"We did it very quickly," he added.   Referring to President Putin he said: "We seem to have a very good feeling for each other, a good relationship considering we don't know each other well.

"  President Putin later described Mr Trump as "a well-mannered person and comfortable to deal with". He added: "We know each other little, but the US president is highly civil in his behaviour, friendly.

We have a normal dialogue but unfortunately little time."  It was the first time the pair had met since the G20 summit in July, following a period of heightened diplomatic tensions over allegations that Moscow meddled in last year's US presidential elections.  A probe by special counsel Robert Mueller has accused Mr Trump's former campaign aides of secretly meeting Kremlin-connected officials, a charge Russia denies.  President Putin branded the claims of political meddling as "fantasies" aimed at undermining Mr Trump's presidency.  President Trump said he was satisfied by President Putin's repeated assurance that Moscow played no part in swaying last year's elections. .

"I really believe that when he tells me that, he means it," he said.  "I think he's very insulted by it, which is not a good thing for our country."  And he highlighted that Russia could assist in one of the main foreign policy issues challenging the US today – North Korea.  "It would be a great thing to have a good relationship with Russia," President Trump said.  "He could really help us in North Korea.

If Russia helped us in addition to China that problem would go away a lot faster.".

Donald Trump's Asia tour: Philippines protesters clashing with police in Manila ahead of visit - Duration: 4:37.

Donald Trump's Asia tour: Philippines protesters clashing with police in Manila ahead of visit

Riot police used water canons to prevent hundreds of protesters reaching the US embassy in Manila,

just a few hours before the arrival of US President Donald Trump in the Philippines

for a regional summit and the last leg of his Asia tour.

Carrying placards declaring "Dump Trump" and "Down with US Imperialism", the left-wing

protesters were blocked by police in riot gear with shields and batons, and then showered

with jets of water from a fire engine.

"Trump is the CEO of the imperialist government of the US," said 18-year-old student Alexis

Danday after the protesters were scattered.

"We know he is here to push for unfair treaties between the Philippines and the US."

Mr Trump arrived in the Philippines at about 5:00pm (local time) for meetings with leaders

of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and other East Asian nations, fresh

off an Asia-Pacific summit and bilateral visit in Vietnam.

The US President joined Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and other regional leaders

for a gala event celebrating the 50th anniversary of ASEAN.

In Hanoi earlier on Sunday, the US President said he was prepared to mediate between claimants

to the South China Sea, where four ASEAN countries and Taiwan contest China's sweeping claims

to the busy waterway.

"If I can help mediate or arbitrate, please let me know," Mr Trump said at a meeting with

Vietnam's President, Tran Dai Quang.

"I'm a very good mediator and arbitrator."

In August, foreign ministers of South-East Asia and China adopted a negotiating framework

for a code of conduct in the South China Sea, a move they hailed as progress but one seen

by critics as a tactic to buy China time to consolidate its power.

The framework seeks to advance a 2002 Declaration of Conduct (DOC) of Parties in the South China

Sea, which has mostly been ignored by claimant states, particularly China, which has built

seven man-made islands in disputed waters, three of them equipped with runways, surface-to-air

missiles and radars.

In August Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, along with US Secretary of State Rex

Tillerson and Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono, urged the countries to make sure the

code of conduct would be legally binding.

The framework will be endorsed by China and the 10 nations of ASEAN in Manila on Monday,

a diplomat from one of the regional bloc's countries said.

Trump's last stop on marathon Asia tour

The Philippines will be Mr Trump's last stop on a marathon tour that has taken him to Japan,

South Korea, China and Vietnam.

Despite Mr Trump's "America First" policy, the visit should provide some reassurance

that Washington remains committed to a region that Beijing sees as its strategic domain.

The increasing use of the phrase "Indo-Pacific" by Mr Trump and his team during their Asian

tour this week, instead of the more common "Asia-Pacific" term, has been seen by analysts

as an effort to depict the region as more than China-dominated.

Pacific Rim nation leaders agreed in Vietnam on Saturday to address "unfair trade practices"

and "market distorting subsidies", a statement that bore the imprint of Mr Trump's efforts

to reshape the global trade landscape.

The summit of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) countries in Vietnam put on show the

contrasting vision of the America First policy with the traditional consensus favouring multinational

deals that China now seeks to champion.

Mr Trump will hold talks with Mr Duterte in Manila, where he will try to shore up relations

strained by Mr Duterte's notorious anti-US sentiment and his enthusiasm for better ties

with Russia and China.

Others who will be in Manila for the summit meetings include Chinese Premier Li Keqiang,

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and leaders from Japan, Canada, South Korea, India,

Australia, New Zealand as well as the member states of ASEAN.

Clapper and Brennan respond to Trump - Duration: 3:04.

good intentions toward the

United States and there

shouldn't be any illusions about

that.

And our president fosters that

ambiguity.

>> The president also called

both of and you FBI director

Comey political hacks.

All three of you worked in

senior levels in the Obama

administration.

Although you also worked during

the bush administration.

How do you respond to the

charge?

>> First of all, he was

referring to us as political

hacks because he was trying to

delegitimize the assessment

done.

They did not write that

assessment.

It was written by the

professional intelligence

officers and law enforcement

officers of this great country.

Secondly, I -- feel very honored

to be associated with Jim

clapper and Jim Comey in the

same category.

And considering the source of

the criticism, I consider that

criticism a badge of honor.

And third, I found it

particularly reprehensible that

on veterans day that Donald

Trump would attack and impugn

the integrity and the character

of Jim clapper, who served in

uniform for 35 years.

Who responded to the call of his

country to go to Vietnam, flew

in over 70 combat support

missions over Vietnam.

And like senator McCain, really

did put his life at risk because

of this country's national

security.

And to impugn Jim clapper on

veterans day, who has dedicated

so much of his life to this

country, I just find that

outrageous, and I think it's

something Mr. Trump should be

ashamed of, but it doesn't seem

as though anything he does he

feels any shame whatsoever.

>> What is the effect of these

attacks, not on you two or Jim

Comey, but on other people in

the FBI, in the CIA and the NSA?

People who are still there, who

worked under you and are still

there working to try to make the

country safer?

>> First, I have to reciprocate

what an honor it has been to

serve with the likes of John

Brennan and Jim Comey, who are

dedicated public servants.

And have served this country

long and well and with great

integrity.

I think it can't have a

positive -- cannot have a

positive impact on the morale or

the work force of the

intelligence community.

But I do believe in my heart

that the men and women of the

intelligence community will

continue to convey truth to

power, even if the power ignores

the truth.

>> At one point, president trump

said he thinks Vladimir Putin is

insulted by the suggestion and

the conclusion by the

intelligence agencies that

Russia interfered in the U.S.

Election.

What do you make of his bringing

up Putin feels insulted?

>> I think Mr. Putin is very

clever in terms of playing to

Mr. Trump's interest in being

flattered.

And also I think Mr. Trump is,

for whatever reason, intimidated

by Mr. Putin, afraid of what he

could do or what might come out

as a result of these

investigations.

So it's very worrisome.

And I think it sends a

worrisome -- very disturbing

signal to our allies and

partners who are concerned about

Russian interference in their

democratic processes, as well.

Paul Ryan Makes His Loyalty Clear: "We're With Trump" - Duration: 2:58.

I know a lot of people in this country have been thinking that maybe Paul Ryan is not

a Trump guy.

Maybe he's just trying to see what happens throughout the Trump administration, not really

trying to take one side or another on this, just trying to push his horrible Republican

policies through Congress.

Well, as it turns out this week, Paul Ryan actually gave us an answer as to where he

stands with Donald Trump.

During an interview with Fox News Radio, Brian Kilmeade on Fox News Radio, Paul Ryan made

it absolutely clear.

Not just about his priorities and loyalty, but about the entire Republican party.

And he said, quote, "We're with Trump."

Paul Ryan is now squarely in the corner of Donald Trump, the ... I guess at this point,

the leader of the Republican party, if we're with Trump.

So that means what Trump does, the Republican party does.

Paul Ryan is not a smart guy.

I've said that plenty of times in the past, but his little statement right there, "We're

with Trump," is going to lead the Republican party into a whole world of trouble that he

doesn't even realize, because if he wants to hitch the entire GOP wagon onto Donald

Trump himself, then that means that every indictment that gets handed down for Donald

Trump and his administration is an indictment against the Republican party.

Every time poll show that the president's approval rating drops, that's an approval

rating of the entire Republican party.

Every single time Donald Trump goes out there and lies or says something stupid, like "I

didn't know there were this many countries," that is something stupid that the entire Republican

party stands behind.

So go ahead.

Hitch your wagon to him.

Say "We're with Trump," because I know you were just saying it to try to appease the

Fox News Radio audience because you think that's somehow going to help.

Maybe you didn't think that other people were going to pick up on it and hold you to that.

But from this point forward, every failure of Donald Trump is a failure of you, Paul

Ryan.

It's a failure of the Republican party.

Every horrible thing he says, every woman that he tries to grab by their genitals, that's

on you.

You just said you stand by it and you stand with it, so we're going to loop you two together

like you could not believe.

That is how this is going to work from now on, and it's because you decided to pander

to that Republican base and make it clear that you and your fellow Republicans are with

Donald Trump.

And you will be with him all the way down.

Trump Is Making America Weaker Say Diplomats As They Resign In Droves - Duration: 3:13.

According to Ambassador Barbara Stephenson, who is the president of the Foreign Service

officers union, Donald Trump is making the United States weaker but not necessarily in

a way that most people have really written about since he became President.

According to Ambassador Stephenson, Donald Trump is making the United States weaker by

leaving very important, vital ambassadorships and diplomat positions wide open without any

human being to serve in those positions.

Since Donald Trump took office, 60% of ambassadorships and diplomats or ambassadors and diplomats

in the United States have either retired or resigned, 60%.

The majority of those have not been filled by Donald Trump.

Here's why that's important.

When you have an ambassador representing the United States before any country, they're

the ones who kind of act like the intermediaries between that country's government and the

United States government.

If that country has a problem with the United States, that ambassador is there to help smooth

things out because you can't expect the president to go deal with every country individually

any time something comes up.

When we do not have those people in place, when we do not have that voice, that intermediary,

there to talk it out, things get worse.

Donald Trump's decision to not fill these positions because, as he said himself, he's

the most important person in government, it creates a hole, a leadership vacuum that Donald

Trump is neither prepared nor capable of filling himself.

That is why the United States is a much weaker country today than it was just 12 months ago

when we had those positions filled, when we had a true statesman like Barack Obama who

understood that, no, I can't do it all.

I do need other people around me who are competent and able to help.

Donald Trump doesn't understand that concept, and it's a concept that he could, by ignoring,

end up costing us American lives.

If we do not have these people in place to go out there and work on negotiations and

keep other countries from getting more and more pissed-off at the United States, then

we don't have anybody there to be the voice of reason, 'cause Donald Trump sure as hell

isn't gonna do it.

So these positions that Ambassador Stephenson is warning us about, it's not just noble titles

for somebody to have, the ambassador to South Korea.

Those are important positions that are almost essential to the proper function of the government

of the United States.

Once again, just like on so many other issues throughout this country, Donald Trump has

proven that he really doesn't care.

General, McConville, and we'll call well and Admiral Michael

- director Durham Aguilera

- distinguished members of Congress

And all our honored guests, but most of all

To the men and women of the armed forces

Of the United States of America in to all our veterans who have worn the uniform

of this great nation

Happy Veterans Day

There is a day in the spring when we remember those who served and did not come home

but today

Veterans Day is

the day when all across America in gatherings large and small

We pause to remember those who served and did come home

For nearly a century since the guns of the First World War fell silent

In the eleventh hour of the eleventh day the eleventh month

the American people have observed this day first as Armistice Day and now is

Veterans Day

And I thank you all who are here

And all that are gathered around this nation for continuing

this great tradition and

to our heroes near and far I

bring Veterans Day greetings from a great champion for the men and women who've worn the uniform of our armed forces the

45th President of the United States of America President Donald Trump

At this very moment our president is halfway around the world

But I know his heart is here in this hallowed place and at every Veterans Day service across the country

President Trump asked us to be here at this National Veterans Day ceremony to in his words

Honor all Americans who served in the Army Navy Air Force Marines and Coast Guard in times of war and peace

And to pay due respect

Due respect to those Americans who have passed the torch of Liberty

from one generation to the next

For they surely have and so I say to each and every one of you veterans gathered here

And all of those that might be looking on

We're grateful for your service

We're grateful for your sacrifice

And I'll make you a promise

Just as you fought for us. We will always fight for you

The Bible tells us if you owe debts pay debts if honor then honor if respect then respect

The debt our nation owes those. Who've worn the uniform as a debt we will

Never be able to fully repay

In the hour of our nation's birth our best and bravest a step forward to defend our freedom

the unbroken cord of their service

Stretches back into the myths of American history

from Bunker Hill to Bella wood

From San Juan Hill to Saipan from the coral reef to Kandahar

nearly 50 million men and women

Have donned the uniform of the United States and nearly 20 million still walk among us today

And as we speak a new generation of American veterans is being forged across the wider world

As I look out today?

To humbling sight I see heroes from the Second World War

Korea

Vietnam and more recently from Iraq and Afghanistan and

many more of Washington Times piece

Yesterday in Danang Vietnam our president commemorated the 50th

anniversary of the Vietnam War and met with some of the heroes who fought that war on the very

soil where they fought as

The president said yesterday

We salute our brave Vietnam veterans and recall the sacrifices they made for our freedom and for our nation's strength

some nine million Americans served in those jungles and

More than 58,000 fell in defense of freedom

their names now enshrined on a black

Granite wall not far from here

so to all our Vietnam veterans who are gathered here in the midst of this 50th anniversary I

Say, thank you

and

Welcome halt

And I'm told one of those veterans has come to this ceremony almost every year and is almost always introduced

as he was today, but

I don't think his story has ever been told

And I hope he won't mind too much if I tell it today

36 years ago this March a first lieutenant in the United States, Army

1st battalion 97 artillery

Will get dawn to a massive North Vietnamese attack on a hilltop outpost

He and his brothers were heavily outnumbered it took

Just minutes for the enemy to break through their defenses and the fighting very quickly became hand-to-hand

History records in that moment that that young

First Lieutenant

Rallied his brothers to stand their ground. He ordered air and artillery strikes

from a

dangerously exposed position for four straight hours as

the situation worsened he

personally directed the withdrawal and provided cover fire and to ensure his brother's safety and

to inflict maximum damage on the enemy

He actually called in an artillery strike on his own position

Wounded and unable to escape himself he managed to evade detection for eight long days

Until he was rescued when American forces retook the outpost

for his conspicuous gallantry

At the risk of his own life above and beyond the call of duty. He received of course

the middle of honor

So would you join me today in?

Thanking a true American hero Medal of Honor recipient first lieutenant Brian Thacker

Our nation owes a debt to our veterans and as I said, it's the debt. We can never fully repay, but on this Veterans Day

We rededicate ourselves to accomplishing just that

And I can assure you since the outset of this administration President Trump has fought tirelessly to fulfill the words

of our nation's 16th president -

To care for him who shall have borne the battle

Working with Secretary Shulkin. We've made the Department of Veterans Affairs already more efficient effective and accountable

Let me be clear

Veterans benefits are not entitlements

They are earned

They are the ongoing

compensation for services rendered in the uniform of the United States of America

Under President Donald Trump, we're keeping the promises that we've made

The men and women who've served in our armed forces

This president has already expanded the veterans Choice Program by more than two billion dollars to give our heroes access to real-time

high-quality health care

And because not all wounds of war are visible

We've improved veterans access to urgent mental health care services and given greater access to telemedicine for our veterans

President Trump has signed the VA

Accountability and Whistleblower Protection Act to ensure that our veterans receive the highest level of service and this president has taken

Decisive action to end a pattern of neglect and mistreatment at the VA. We've already fired, or suspended

over

1,500 VA

employees for negligent behavior

I

Want to assure you as the president has said we will not rest or relent until all

America's great veterans receive the care they so richly deserve

Beyond health care President Trump is also signed legislation to expand the post 9/11 GI Bill and

Eliminate the 15-year limit on benefits for new veterans, so they can pursue an education of their choosing

And I'm glad to report veteran unemployment has already fallen by nearly 40

percent since President Trump was elected

It's lower today than any point since the year 2000, and we're just getting started

You know today our veterans continue to serve our nation in careers

ranging from business to education

from law enforcement to public service and

It seems wherever they go

Their lives are characterized by that same sense of duty and

the courage and selflessness forged

During their years in our armed forces

Earlier this week I heard the remarkable story of one such veteran and I thought I'd share it with you today

On Wednesday

Karen and I traveled to Sutherland Springs, Texas

To meet the families and the victims of the worst attack on a place of worship

in American history

At Brooke Army Medical Center, we stood at the bedside

of a retired US Marine Corps gunnery sergeant named Juan Macias

We spoke to his family as he lay before us recovering from his injuries

But it was from another member of the church that we learned of that veterans

Extraordinary courage last Sunday

Julie workman a registered nurse was also wounded to the First Baptist Church that day

No sooner had the attacker left that she began to treat the wounded

Seeing what lay before her though Julie told me she was momentarily overcome

And that's when Gunny stepped in

Despite having five bullet wounds she told me that Gunny sat up

Looked her in the eye and said you were born for this

Keep your wits about you

Do your job?

She said that's all she needed to hear

Heroism outlives the uniform and her actions and his courage

Undoubtedly saved lives that day. That's an American veteran

On this Veterans Day we honor those who served with tributes and

promises kept

But as our veterans understand better than most we also honor their service by ensuring that

The men and women served in our armed forces today have the resources and support

They need to defend this nation in this day

Our veterans will be glad to know that President Trump has already taken

decisive action to make the strongest military in the history of the world stronger still

This president has already signed the largest increase in military spending in nearly a decade and before this year is out

Will enact the largest investment in our national defense since the days of Ronald Reagan?

And under President and Donald Trump, I'll make you promise

We're gonna rebuild our military

We're gonna restore the arsenal of democracy, and we will once again give our soldiers sailors airmen

Marines and Coast Guardsmen the resources and training they need

To accomplish their mission and come home safe. That's our promise to all of you

As I close let me say again, how deeply humbling it is for me to stand before so many heroes

For you see I'm a

Secretary shokhin told you

I'm the son of a soldier and

I'm the proud father of a United States Marine, but my life. Never took me into the uniform of the United States

I've never experienced the cost of war on the battlefield or

Had to endure the hardship of time away from home and family that could come with service even in peacetime, but

I've seen enough to know the burden our veterans bear

Is oftentimes a burden that lives far beyond your time in uniform

Sixty-four years ago my dad served in combat in Korea

Second lieutenant Edward je pense was in the US Army

45th Infantry he fought in the Battle of Old Baldy and pork chop hill and he earned a Bronze Star for his courage under fire

Truth is I learned most of that after I grew up

Because dad never talked about the war and that metal stayed in his dresser drawer a

Few years after he died, I was visiting a cousin that he grew up with on the streets of Chicago

And he told me that the war had changed my dad

When I asked him how he said you know before the war your dad was the most happy-go-lucky guy I ever met but

He said after he came back

He was different

And then he said words I'll never forget

He said and I quote

I don't think your dad ever got over the guilt of coming home I

Don't think your dad ever got over the guilt of coming home

You know in those words

In an instant I

Understood every unfinished sentence

Every faraway look on my father's face whenever the war came up

If he talked about it at all he talked about the guys he served with

Guys who didn't get to come home

To marry their sweetheart

Raise a house full of kids

Live their dreams and see the children's children

That's when I understood the the quiet cost of freedom

And the burdens so many of our veterans bear in their hearts

So to all our veterans looking on

Know this

We were with you

You do not carry that burden alone

as

A nation we stand ready to help you shoulder that load

with the compassion

support and prayers of the American people you

Were there for us

Now we are here for you

President Trump said this morning in his words America's veterans. Are this country's greatest national treasure

He said you're the best role models for our youngest citizens a constant reminder of all that's good decent and brave a

Tu I say

No truer words were spoken

This is the land of the free because it's still the home of the brave and you our veterans are our brave

You step forward

You counted Our Lives more important than yours

And we thank God

Who as the psalmist says trained your hands for war gave you the strength to advance against the truth

But also brought you home safe

To your loved ones and a grateful nation

In his proclamation for this Veterans Day President Trump called upon every American to recognize the fortitude and sacrifice of our veterans

But let me

Let me add one challenge

Especially to my

My fellow countrymen who did not serve in the armed forces of the United States

Before this day is out and home or at work

on a street corner or over a backyard fence

Whether they came home in the last week or in the last century

Find a veteran

Extend your hand and say those words they never ask to hear, but deserved it here every day

- my fellow Americans I say

Find a veteran today, and say thank you for your service

Thank them for their courage

Thank them for your freedom

and thank them for doing their part to

preserve this last best hope of Earth

for ourselves and

our posterity

To our veterans on behalf of the President of the United States and a grateful nation I say

Thank you for your service may God bless you and your families

May God bless all those who this day wear the uniform and stand ready

And may God continue to bless

the United States of America

Thank You secretary Shulkin

Secretary mattis secretary Zinke all the members of the cabinet

secretary Wilson

general Dunford general Selva

General, McConville, and we'll call well and Admiral Michael

to director Durham Aguilera

two distinguished members of Congress and all our honored guests, but most of all to

The men and women of the Armed Forces

Of the United States of America in to all our veterans who have worn the uniform

of this great nation

Happy Veterans Day

There is a day in the spring when we remember those who served and did not come home

but today

Veterans Day is

the day when all across America in gatherings large and small

We pause to remember those who served and did come home

For nearly a century since the guns of the First World War fell silent

In the 11th hour of the 11th day the 11th month

the American people have observed this day first as Armistice Day and now is

Veterans Day

And I thank you all who are here

And all that are gathered around this nation for continuing

this great tradition and

to our heroes near and far I

Bring Veterans Day greetings from a great champion for the men and women who've worn the uniform of our armed forces

the 45th President of the United States of America President Donald Trump

At this very moment our president is halfway around the world

But I know his heart is here in this hallowed place and at every Veterans Day service across the country

President Trump asked us to be here at this National Veterans Day ceremony to in his words

honor all

Americans who served in the Army Navy Air Force Marines and Coast Guard in times of war and peace and

To pay due respect

Due respect to those Americans who have passed the torch of Liberty

from one generation to the next

for they surely have

And so I say to each and every one of you veterans gathered here, and all of those that might be looking on

We're grateful for your service

we're grateful for your sacrifice and

I'll make you a promise

Just as you fought for us. We will always fight for you

The Bible tells us if you owe debts pay debts if honor then honor if respect that respect

The debt our nation owes those. Who've worn the uniform is a debt we will

Never be able to fully repay

In the hour of our nation's birth our best and bravest has stepped forward to defend our freedom

the unbroken cord of their service

Stretches back into the mists of American history

from Bunker Hill DiBella wood

From San Juan Hill to Saipan from the coral reef to Kandahar

nearly 50 million men and women

Have donned the uniform of the United States and nearly 20 million still walk among us today

And as we speak a new generation of American veterans is being forged across the wider world

As I look out today?

To humbling sight I see heroes from the Second World War

Korea

Vietnam and more recently from Iraq and Afghanistan and

Many more who've watched in times of peace

Yesterday in Danang vietnam our president commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War and met with some of the heroes who?

fought that war on the very

soil where they fought as

The president said yesterday

We salute our brave Vietnam veterans and recall the sacrifices they made for our freedom and for our nation's strength

some nine million Americans served in those jungles and

More than 58,000 fell in defense of freedom

their names now enshrined on a black

granite wall not far from here, so

To all our Vietnam veterans who are gathered here in the midst of this 50th anniversary
