That is correct. Unless you also saved the images someplace else, the only thing you can do is reach out to the Google Administrator at the university. Hopefully, the will grant you temporary access (if they are in a good mood or if you bribe them).
It is always a good idea to store important images in more than one place / tool. My photos are in Google Photos, on my laptop, and on multiple external disk drives (not connected to any computer or network).
