I was looking to upload all my media into google photos to transition to online storage once and for all, but it only allows me to select the actual photo/video files, but I need to upload the many folders I have created for organising the files. How can I upload folders to Google photos?

@Rinus, thanks for your reply and advice. i'm trying to understand the limitations of google photos. storing all my media solely on a NAS drive runs the risk of losing it all, if its fails, which is why ive been paying the same money as i would to google storage fees to have it backed up on iDrive cloud fro years now. 

storing them on google photos, would be more convenient for me and my family to share/view and much easier to maintain in terms of uploading new content there. 

I may need to create 'albums' as my folders, as you say, but maybe i'll only do that or the 'important ones' like holidays/events etc, which would reduce the amount of manual work for me quite drastically. the other folders are just folders created by dates to reduce the individual folder size, which seemed to make a different in the loading up of pictures and thumbnails. fro those, maybe i'll just upload as normal.

again thanks, and if you have any thoughts on my notes above, would still really appreciate hearing your views.

iDrive is just an automated online back up solution I subscribed to. I add files to the NAS drive, and it sync to iDrive online immediately.

The safest way to delete from Google Photos is to delete the Google Photos app and delete the photos at https://photos.google.com/  or in bulk at https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_ where they are sorted by upload date.

The camera roll photos will not be affected.

 

If you need to reinstall the app do not enable Back up & sync. The photos will be backed up again if Backup & sync is re-enabled.

Most likely you deleted them from both Google Photos and Drive. You can check the Trash in Google Photos to see if they're there to recover.

 

In the future, the best way to delete photos from the phone only not online is to use the "free up space" option in the app. To do this

1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app 
2. Tap Menu   Free up space
3. You’ll see how many items will be removed. To delete all the items from your phone, tap Free up.

Storage will only decrease if Original size photos, Storage Saver photos, or unsupported videos are deleted.

 

It may be possible to Recover storage at https://photos.google.com/settings  which compresses and replaces Original size with Storage Saver size. 

 

Head over to https://photos.google.com/quotamanagement  This should give a clue on where the storage is being used. Large photos and videos >5MB are listed and can be reviewed by tapping on the thumbnail to open then select the (i)nfo icon to see more detail about the files.

 

If you delete 1000s of High Quality photos uploaded prior to June 2021 then no storage will be recovered because they do not use any storage.

 

All photos added after June 1st 2021 can be found at https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_ and all use storage unless added as part of Partner sharing.

I understand and I know how important Google Photos is for you. Please give the below steps a try in a sequence to help resolve the issue:

• Check your internet connection (mobile data).
• Close the Google Photos app and re-launch it.
• Sign out and sign back in to Google Photos with the same Google Account.
• Clear App data:
• Open your device's Settings app (not the Google Settings app).
• Touch Apps.
• Select Google Photos in the list.
• Touch Clear data.
• Update the Google Photos app on your Android phone:
• Visit the Google Play Store.
• Open Google Photos.
• Touch on Update.
