I am trying to upload photos from my computer (linex) onto my Pixel 3a phone. However, there doesn't appear to be any facility to do this on the phone.

Answer:

Hi, Mark S Brown

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

You can upload the pics to Google Photos & then download to your Pixel phone.

By the way, are you trying to utilise the "Unlimited storage" offer for uploads through the Pixel phones? It would be incorrect to do so if you have not captured the pics through the Pixel phone.

This is my personal account and I've been using this for long while. But I mistakenly deleted some important photos and videos from my backup and I unable to recover it. Please help me to recover it.

Answer:

Hello Sathish Kumar 2949 ,

If you have uploaded photos on google photos and deleted it please take a look at the below info.

Following is text from the official Google Photos Help page about deleting and restoring photos and videos:

Restore photos & videos
If you deleted an item and want it back, check your trash to see if it’s there.
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Photos app .
  2. At the bottom, tap Library  Trash .
  3. Touch and hold the photo or video you want to restore.
  4. At the bottom, tap Restore. The photo or video will be back:
    • In your phone’s gallery app
    • In your Google Photos library
    • In any albums it was in
If the item is not in your trash, it may be permanently deleted.
    Important:
    • If you delete a photo or video that’s backed up in Google Photos, it will stay in your trash for 60 days.
    • If you delete an item from your Android device without it being backed up, it will stay in your trash for 60 days.
    • If you see a photo or video in Google Photos that you think you deleted, it might be on a removable memory card. To delete it, use your device’s gallery app.
    Empty your trash
If you see a request to "Delete permanently" when you try to move an item to trash, your trash is full. Your trash can hold 1.5GB.

Important: If you empty your trash, you permanently delete any items in your trash.

Don't see the photo or video?
If a deleted photo or video isn't in trash, you can’t restore it. You won't be able to restore a photo if:
    • You moved it to trash more than 60 days ago.
    • You moved it to trash, then emptied your trash.
    • You permanently deleted it from your trash.
    • You permanently deleted it from your device’s Gallery app, without backing it up first.
When you attempt to manually empty the trash bin in Google Photos, a warning message box appears that explains you are about to permanently delete those pictures and videos. If you choose to proceed anyway, there is nothing that any of the volunteers in this forum can do to help you recover your pictures.

The information on the following Google Photos Help pages will help you become more familiar with finding, deleting, and restoring your pictures:

If you deleted pictures or videos that were not previously backed up to your account through the Google Photos app, then unfortunately there's nothing that Google or any of the volunteers in this Help Community can do to recover them.

Files that existed only on your phone, ones that were never uploaded to the cloud, cannot be recovered or restored by a cloud storage service. Simply put, Google can't help you recover files it never had in the first place.

    Thanks.

When you delete a photo in Google Photos it will also be deleted from all synced devices. In practice that are only mobile devices (phones and tablets) since syncing with computers has been disabled. There are however ways to do this:
    • Disable Backup and sync on the device
    • Move the photo to a non-synced folder before you delete it from Google Photos.
    • Once done, open the link https://photos.google.com through any browser on your phone, log into your Google Account & start deleting the unwanted pics.

Question: Photos backup (not drive) seem link to google drive? Deleting folders from drive triggered re-sync

Hello, I have Backup&Sync on Mac backing up photos from NAS (as well separate as back up from phone)…

    Hello,
I have Backup&Sync on Mac backing up photos from NAS (as well separate as back up from phone). Photos are not explicitly backed up to Google drive and I use "High quality" backup. I don't run backup from Mac to google drive.
Recently I added more photos to NAS, but they didn't appear to be synced, while backup&sync app was showing everything up to date. I looked for issues, but wasn't able to find anything wrong.
During this I found that on my Google Drive there's a folder Computers->My iMac->Photos which contains all the subfolders my photos are organised and stored on NAS. You could even view the photos in those subfolders.
This got me confused since I don't have backup to Google Drive! And I couldn't understand how much space that folder was taking on Google Drive either.  I trashed this folder on Google Drive (the whole "My iMac"). Google photos photos didn't seem to be affected by this.
I then turned Backup and sync again. The result was that "forgot" that most of those photos were already backed up! and started the process anew! The folders on Google Drive appeared again.
Luckily the photos aren't appearing in the Google Photos stream twice, but they seem to disappear from "Favourites" and from Albums, if I'm not mistaken.

Can someone please explain how those google drive folders are used in Google Photos backup? and why my sync was re-triggered? Can I make it understand that it doesn't need to reupload all the photos again as they're already there?  (I have many gigs of photos and they're still uploading, initial process took me weeks).

    Answer:

Backup & Sync is a nasty app because it combines with functions for Google Drive.
The former Google Photos Backup just uploaded (not even synced) to the Google Photos library only, but because of a lot of critics about loosing structured folders, they added syncing them to Google Drive and that is what you saw in the Computer-tab.
If you had looked a bit more detailed, you would have seen that these files take no additional storage, so there was no reason to kill the My Mac folder causing resyncing to Drive now for days or weeks.

Always ask before critical operations, because Google is a bad teacher who hardly did warn for their change of old habits. But they are not here to blame.

    Answer:

    Hello Victoria,

The folders under the Computers hierarchy are an essential part of the backup application and do not use any Drive quota assuming that there are no errors in the backup process.

We do not know enough about that design to be able to help you with this, other than to warn you to not try and make any changes to it.

The physical interface is primarily a Drive product, with the added option to upload photos and videos to Google Photos.  If you need more detail you could try Google Drive Support and let us know if you get an answer so we can help other users.

    Regards,
    Peter

Add my signature onto my google photo.

    Shirley,

Good afternoon. Currently, this type of editing is not possible using Google Photos.

The Google Photos editor is much simpler and limited to brightness & color modifications. What you need is a more comprehensive image editor that can create layers on top of your existing image. You'd add your signature to a new layer and place that layer on top of other pictures.

There are many mobile apps that can do this type of editing, as well as PC software, and even websites. Search and you'll find what you need.

I'm not sure what "complete initial upload" means. But, to add one more bit of confusion, all the photos are in the app.  It is just that the albums in which they are placed do not show up. The missing albums seem to be older - 2014 and earlier.  I switched from picasa, but that would have been closer to 2016.  Any further insights appreciated. Fortunately this is just inconvenient.

When I have burst photos on iOS where I have selected/favorited a photo, google photos doesn't show the photo when trying to add it. If I leave the burst alone and keep the original 10 images, it is available to select. However, from a storage perspective (both on my phone and cloud) I don't want to keep all the images.

    Steps to reproduce:
    1. On iOS camera, take a burst photo
    2. Go to google photos (iOS app) > SHARED ALBUM > add photo. See the image is there.
    3. In iOS photos, go to the photo > Select… > check a photo
    4. Hit done, and "keep only 1 favorite"
    5. Go to google photos (iOS app) > SHARED ALBUM > add photo

    Current behavior:
The favorited burst image is not there

    Expected behavior:
The favorited burst image is available to add to album

Am I doing anything wrong? This seems like a bug in the app to me.

    Answer:

Hi Peter, I don't understand your question back to me. The process involves both iOS camera+photos and google photos on iOS. I take the photo using iOS camera, select the burst I want to keep using iOS photos, and then go to google photos (the iOS app) to try to upload the selected burst image but it is not available.

I updated my detailed repro steps to help clarify, but please let me know if further clarification is required with specific question about any step.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

    Answer:

    Hi Kevin,

The point I was trying to make is that there is an issue with the iOS app ‘hiding’ the selected photo or the Google app ‘not seeing’ the selected photo.

I don’t know if there is anything I can do to help. The scenario doesn’t fit any criteria we have for submitting bug reports to Google so I am not sure what to say.

I will have a think and let you know.

    Answer:

    Hi Kevin,

When I attempt to replicate this on my phone, the initial upload of the burst into Google Photos remains even after going through the "keep only 1 favorite" on Apple Photos. What do you see in Google Photos? The original burst, only the single picture "favorite" or nothing?

For burst pictures, Google Photos has an option called "Keep only this photo". My guess is that Google (Keep only this photo) and the Apple equivalent (keep only 1 favorite) are not able to be synced.

    Answer:

    Hi Charlie-

I noticed that my repro instructions weren't calling out that I'm trying to add a photo to a shared album, not just backup my photo stream. Though, that doesn't really matter because the issue exists in both places.

Yes, as you call out, if I backup the burst first and then "trim" it down to a favorite on the camera roll, the burst stays in google photos. However, that workflow isnt the right order of operations for me and seems very wasteful of my cloud storage (not to mention, the "best" photo in the burst isn't the one shown on google photos). Not the best setup when you are trying to share the specific frame from an action shot with your friends.

Please note my order of operations… I trim down the burst FIRST on my phone. THEN I use google photos, but by that point (and HERE is where I think the bug is) google photos thinks the entire set of burst photos is deleted, so it doesn't give me the option to back up the 1 favorite or add it to a shared album. However, the picture is clearly still in my camera roll. I'd like to pick my favorite, eliminate 9 other unnecessary pictures in the burst, and then save it to google photos album.

    Kevin

    Answer:

Hi Kevin, thanks for the information.

I followed your updated workflow and was NOT able to reproduce the problem. For clarity, I want to point out in your original post, you indicated that the editing within Apple Photos occurred **after** the upload to Google Photos, not before. This contradicts your last post (not trying to be rude, but I think its important to point out) Here are the steps I have taken..
    1. Burst picture taken on iPhone
    2. Open burst in Apple Photos
    3. Select picture within burst I would like to keep.
    4. Select the "Keep only 1 favorite" option within Apple Photos
    5. Open Google Photos
    6. Confirm that the upload is taking place
    7. Single "keep only 1 favorite" picture displays and is uploaded within my Google Photos
      1. Confirmed that this picture is available to add into a shared album within Google Photos
If you follow the above workflow, I do not see any reason why the expected outcome would not happen. Can you try the above workflow and let us know how it works out for you? Can you also please confirm what settings you have enabled for Back UP & Sync within the Google Photos app on your phone? Thank you.

    Answer:

    Hi Charlie-

Thanks for the kind reply. I'll start with the Backup settings as I think it is relevant to your other point... my automatic backup is off. I individually select photos I want to backup (honestly, right now I just use it for shared vacation albums with family and friends).

Which brings me to your point about the discrepancy... my original steps say in #2 to go into google photos after the burst only to prove the point that google photos can see the burst photo before I modify it. I didn't actually add/back it up to google photos until after modifying it.

But just to check, I ran your steps with a brand new burst just now and modified the burst before opening google photos. When I get to your step 6 (because I don't have upload turned on) it isn't automatically uploading... it just isn't there at all in the photos tab, but should be the very top picture. So this is the issue I'm facing... I don't have the option to even upload it or add it to a shared album.

I've tried completely uninstalling the app and reinstalling, but it still happens.

    Thanks

    Answer:

    Hi again Kevin,

Thank you for the clarification. Turning OFF back up and sync, I was able to replicate your issue. Oddly enough, when I toggled back up and sync back on, Google Photos recognized the "keep only 1 favorite" picture and it was able to upload appropriately.

I can't say whether this behavior is intended or not, but it certainly doesn't make sense. Given that I am able to replicate, I am going to escalate to the Google Photos team and see if we can get some feedback. In the short term, I do not think there is a work around if you will be keeping back up and sync off. Stay tuned!

    Answer:

    Hi Kevin,

Peter suggested a potential workaround for this issue, although it depends on what your needs are for the bust within Apple Photos. This workaround assumes you have back up and sync OFF

    1. Burst picture taken on iPhone
    2. Open burst in Google Photos
      1. Upload the entire burst manually
      2. Select the picture within the burst you would like to keep
      3. Select the "burst" icon at the bottom of the screen
      4. Select "Keep only this photo"
    3. From here, you will see a prompt asking permission to delete the burst from your Apple Photos Library
      1. If you do not give permission, the undesired burst photos will not delete from Google Photos
      2. If you do give permission and delete, only the desired photo will remain in your Google Photos
        1. HOWEVER -  This will delete the ENTIRE burst photo from your Apple Photos library
Regardless of the above, there is still something amiss with the functionality as discussed yesterday. I hope this helps!

You have to pay till you use the extra space.
Once you stop using the additional storage pay, you can discontinue the payment.

Question: Google Photos Book: Can I add text to inside pages?

I can't figure out how to add text to pages inside the book. Only on the cover. Can I do this?

    Hi Austin,

Welcome to the Google Photos Help Forum.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to add text in your Photo Book. That being said, if you would like to see this feature implemented in the future, I recommend leaving feedback about it through the following steps:
    • Open Google Photos.
    • Click on Menu.
    • Select Send feedback.
    • Click on Send.
The product team reviews the feedback regularly and uses it to better improve the product overtime.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Best,
    Emma

My photos and videos are all backed up in storage saver )previously high quality) and have always been uploaded in that size. However, photos and videos from before 1 June 2021 are counting towards my account storage. It clearly states that any photos backed up in storage saver do not count towards the storage. Can anyone help? Thanks

    Answer:

    Tanya Sinclair,

The amount of free storage space you have with Google is shared between Google Photos, Google Drive, and Gmail.

This means that email attachments in Gmail, most pictures and videos in Google Photos, and certain file types in Google Drive will all reduce the amount of space you have available.

Visit the Google One storage page to see your current storage usage. Visit the Google One Storage Management page to view more comprehensive details about your files along with options for cleaning it up to create more usable space.

This info should go a long way to helping you figure out what's responsible for using your storage.

    Answer:

    Hi Greg,

Thanks for your reply. I have looked at those links, and it states that 14.1GB of my 15GB is used by photos and videos, yet the photos and videos shown are from before 1 June 2021.

    Answer:

That means the pictures were uploaded in Original Quality (as opposed to High Quality), and original quality did indeed count against available storage even before the recent policy changes.

If you look at the Storage Management link I gave earlier, you'll see the section with information about your pictures and videos, which ones are large and taking up a lot of space, plus options for fixing that.

Everything you need to reduce the space taken up by your pictures is on that Google One storage management page.

    Answer:

    Thank you for that.

It is confusing as in my settings, it states that my upload quality has not changed, suggesting that my photos were always backed up in High quality, not Original.

    Answer:

The only other thing that comes to mind is the Google Photos website. If you uploaded pictures that way, the settings there could have been on Original Quality. You can independently choose the upload settings for each device, so all of your phones, tablets, and the web browser can be different.

I have a travel  trailer that I stay in. I have been harassed by a group of Ganstalkers that come to my area of residence in Northern New Mexico. The local law enforcement told me to provide proof of these acts, said to film these people in the act of painting my trailer with Blue light lasers.  I have been unsuccessful to this time. The only time you can see the blue lasers is when fog, mist, or dust is in the air at night. The energy  Givin off by this blue light lasers has burned microscopic  holes  in my reflective window treatments , creates a burning sensations  on skin. But my two dogs sense them and I can see them only after the have been reflected off of shinning object or when is hits particulates suspended in the air. Is there some technique to provide a better video.

I'm playing around in photos and it keeps popping up screenshots which are actually downloads of pictures from space so what is a screenshot definition thank you

    Answer:

    Hi, Paul Hughes 8887

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

Usually, all screenshots are captured in PNG (Portable Network Graphics) format.
If your downloaded pics are in PNG format, Google Photos will club those along with other screenshots.

Question: Video is "too large" to send as attachment. How can I edit/shorten the length.

    Hi, Carole 3443

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

Instead of sharing the video as an attachment, share a link through Google Photos.
The recipient can open the video through the link & watch.

    Answer:

    Carole,

The maximum size of an email attachment is typically 20-25 MB. The official Gmail Help page will give you more specifics about this.

Most videos will be too large to send as attachments to emails. To share those videos with other people, you can choose the share icon  when viewing the video in Google Photos, then select a person from your contact list or enter their email address. You may instead choose to create a link to the video and send that URL.

If you still wish to shorten the length of your video anyway, you can do so in the Photos app by tapping the edit icon  and dragging the little timeline handles to wherever you'd like. The official Google Photos Help page about editing videos has more comprehensive information about this and other options.

Question: When I try to backup my photos, it just keeps saying "preparing backup"

I've closed and reopened the app and stopped backing up and starting again and it's still the same

    Hi Abby O'Dell,

For photos that are stuck backing up, this workaround seemed to work for some users:
    1. Turn off WiFi on the phone completely
    2. Enable Cellular backup for photos in Google Photos. After doing this, you should immediately begin seeing that photos are backing up.
    3. Turn WiFi on again
    4. Disable "use cellular" option in Google Photos. After doing this,  you should see that photos continue to back up.
     - go into settings (via the top-left hamburger menu).
      - go into "Backup and Sync"
      - Turn on "Use mobile data to backup photos" (and "videos" too?)
      - as soon as you leave settings, it will be backing up!  (over WiFi).
You can then even go back in and turn off the "use mobile data..." and it will keep backing up.

If that doesn't help, some other suggestions were posted here:

It was on a friends new Google photos account. We waited for back up to sync , then freed up space. We noticed one of the months were randomly skipped. No photos available for June 2021 . But May and July and every other month available . And yes, we are sure we took pictures then.

Question: I want to move back my photos to gallery from google photos

I want to move back my photos to gallery from google photos

    Hi, Suresh Pal 8346

Welcome to Google Photos Community Support Forum & thanks for your query.

The free up option removes the originals of backed up pics from the phone.
That creates space to capture new photos.
Restoring the backed up pictures would be defeating the whole purpose of the free up space exercise.

To bring back the pics to your phone's gallery either, you can download photos one by one.
Regrettably, there is no option to do so on a batch of photos.

Alternatively, you can install the Google One app. There is a one time option to restore up to two hundred most recent photos to the device.
However, that will not restore the local folder structure.
There is no requirement to join Google One. The option is available to everyone.
However, the method may not be helpful to recover something when the count is more than two hundred.

Or, you can arrange for a bulk download by visiting the link https://takeout.google.com/.
Select the Google Photos app for data download.
Once the file is ready, you will get an email. Access that & unzip all the attachments into your phone's gallery.

That will bring everything to your phone.
