I have the following two, possibly related, problems (related because they all have something to do with a problem with synchronization).
1) The number of photos across different Google apps does not match. When I add up the photos from photos.google, I get 8480 (adding up all pictures is quite a feat in itself because there is no display for the total number of photos). When I count the files synchronized via the Backup and Sync app, I get 8499. This could possible make sense because some photos taken with iPhone consist of a photo and a video, and count as one in photos.google but are made up as two files. However, what strikes me is that the Google dashboard shows 8517 photos, so again a completely different number. I find it very strange that these numbers do not add up. This question has been raised previously but it has not received a satisfactory solution for about 2 years (https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/photos/Htx8_dCzlA4).
2) I toggled on both options for synchronization between GooglePhotos and GoogleDrive in the respective settings. I now added one picture for trial purposes into GoogleDrive (I put it into the folder "Google Photos" and not in any of the year sub-folders). It has not been synchronized into GooglePhotos for more than 24 hours. Can this be?

A short update on the 2 issues:
I found that pictures put into GoogleDrive do show up in GooglePhotos if put not in the Google Photos folder but one level above. So this is fixed.
However, I am still struggling trying to locate the reason why the count of photos is different across different Google apps. I found out one more thing: If, in the dashboard, I click on "Photos" and then on the albums (it says I have 585 albums but have not yet created any), it takes me to a separate website, where I see albums for different days etc. for the auto backup. If I add up all these, I get the aforementioned 8517 photos. However, in GooglePhotos, the number is still different. How can this be?

- The Dashboard not only counts the photos you upload to Google Photos. It's an old application that worked with Picasa Web Albums, and in fact still does with the successor https://get.google.com/albumarchive.
The Album Archive contains photos that are NOT in Google Photos. See this link. - "I added one picture into the folder "Google Photos" in Drive. It has not been synchronized into Google Photos for more than 24 hours. Can this be?
Yes. The "Google Photos" folder in Google Drive is ONLY intended to show photos from Google Photos in Google Drive, for example to back-up photos that come from mobile apps.

I have no idea. I have a test account with 31 photos thus decided to test a bit. Note that I never used the Desktop Uploader or Backup & Sync. All photos are uploaded manually to Google Photos.
- The dashboard says 61 photos.
- But I have only 31 photos in https://photos.google.com/ andn none archived
This is confirmed by 31 photos in "Recently added" https://photos.google.com/search/_tra_ - In https://get.google.com/albumarchive I find 50 photos, but
- Some photos are shown in a self-made album and also in an album under "Auto Backup". I removed all photos (21) from all self-made albums.
- The number of photos in Google Photos did not change (as expected)
- The number in dashboard went down to 61-21=40 thus the doubles were also counted
- In Album Archive I find now 50-21=29 photos as expected
- I have now less photos in Album Archive than in Google Photos.
- I deleted 3 photos from Google Photos that were also under "Auto Backup" in Album Archive. The number in Album Archive decreased by 3, but the Dashboard went down from 40 to 31 ! It seems that these photos were counted 3 times in the Dashboard ! I may have uploaded, deleted, and uploaded again.
- I then deleted 9 more photos and the dashboard went down to 21, which finally seems correct: I still have 19 photos in Google Photos, and 2 more in the Album Archive (one profile photo and one from Blogger).
The conclusion is that both the Dashboard and Album Archive are unreliable to count numbers of photos. The only way to count in Google Photos is to select them all, but that is not possible for more than a few 1000 ...

If you choose to proceed anyway, there is nothing that any of the volunteers in this forum can do to help you recover your pictures.

I have migrated from iPhone to Google Pixel 4A.
I have previously uploaded all my Photos on Google Photos (via Chrome).
A large batch was (re)dated from the day of the upload, so a good chunk of my roll was not ranked by chronological order. I have manually changed dates and now they are ok on Google Photos (browser).
But when my Google Pixel 4A synced, all those photos still appear as dated from the day of the upload.
I.e. i have many photos from 1 to 3 years ago appearing as if taken yesterday.
And the order that i see on my browser is not the same as on my phone, unfortunately.
I have even reseted the phone and synced again, no change.
As if the change of date was only effective on Google Photos platform but not on the phone App.
Any idea ?

If what you meant was Google Photos, it is possible on most Android phones to disable the app and hide it from view. Depending on your device's operating system and where it came from, you may not be able to completely delete the app.
You should check out the official Android Help page about this. If you have further questions like this one, my suggestion is that you seek assistance from that particular Help Community, as that is where you will find the most relevant answers regarding how to add or delete apps on your device.

Go to settings Storage > Photos and Videos there you will find the detail info of the storage used. Sometimes whats app media which are received are stored on the device storage
if you send a screenshot of the photos and Videos section under storage would be helpful.

And on photos.google.com you can see what you really have at Google safely.
That's all.
PS: the free-up space option only deletes from phone what is stored at Google and it is not quite clear if this is just a small amount corresponding to 1 GB on your phone. Then most of the time your backup has not worked at all or was switched-off by you quite soon for unknown reasons.

Hard to count of course, but a global inspection will give enough information.
And what is there will be removed from phone if you start free-up space - but if a large part is on sd, free-up will not deleted these pictures - only the pictures in internal memory.

So if I understand well, that smart storage function prevented that 21 GB could be deleted by the free-up space function and you are naming that as a "hidden bin".
So if you switch-off smart storage, free-up could do its job properly.

You only should use the archive for hiding pictures you don't want to see between normal pictures in your library, like technical screenshots.

However: this is the way Google Photos is organised and normally you can go straight to the albumpage and then you don't see your library stream anymore.
But that stream are your originals: if removed, the also will be removed from your albums. But you can remove an album (because it was meant for temporary sharing or whatever) without loosing your originals - so you always can built a new album again. And you also can remove a less suitable picture from an album without deleting your original - so that also prevents loosing originals.
That is completely different from old Picasaweb where you only had albums containing your originals and that was all. And when you upload new pictures to https://photos.google.com you always will be asked to which album they should be added and that also may be a new album or an album that you want immediately for a couple of weeks.
You have to live with it, because Google will not change this basic design.
And be aware: nobody sees that stream - they only see albums if shared.

I tried to upload or share a video over an hour long. The photo app never finishes the upload. The photo app attempts to upload it on wifi or asks permission to do through data. Its obviously too difficult a task so I'd rather just cancel the upload but I see no option to.

1. Items deleted from your photos.google.com are stored in trash for 60 days and then are Auto-Deleted from trash and can not be recovered.
2. Items deleted manually from photos.google.com/trash can not be recovered.
3. Items deleted from your YouTube Channel can not be recovered.
4. Items deleted from your Gmail are stored in trash for 30 days and then are Auto-Deleted from trash and can not be recovered.
5. Items manually deleted from Gmail trash can not be recovered.
6. Items deleted from your Google Drive will be stored in Drive Trash for 30 days and then be Auto-Deleted from Trash and can not be recovered.

I am trying to make the reply as simple as possible,
First, if you have installed the Google Photos app on your phone, please uninstall or disable that.
Next, open the Google Chrome browser on your computer.
Enter the link https://photos.google.com in the search box.
Log into your Google Account if the page asks you to do so.
Once the photos become visible, move your mouse on the first picture. You will see a grey tick 
in the top left corner of the picture. Click on that & the tick will become visible on a blue background.

Once done, click the bin 
symbol near the top right corner.
The photos will now enter the trash.
Next, in the left margin, scroll down to see the symbol of trash .

Once done, there will not be any trace of your photos anywhere on the cloud.

Did you apply the free-up storage option to clean-up your phone-storage perhaps?
Else you should have done that regurarly yourself to keep enough space for new photos & movies etc.
If so, you can use the pictures shown in the Google app for almost all applications, but some apps are too stupid to be able to connect to world famous Google Photos and then you need to download a few - just one-by-one.
