I'm trying to use Google Photos as my default gallery app (I'm using an LG G6), I wonder if there is a way for my phone to NOT store any images or videos locally but instead uploads straight to Photos instead?

Answer:

The Photos app merely acts as a normal Gallery showing the pics stored on your phone, but if these pics are deleted, the app shows them on Google. 

So if you apply the Free-up space option daily or weekly,  you have that situation. 

Be aware that this option only deletes locally stored pics that were sucesfully stored at Google - not in non-synced device folders or on inserted sd-card.

You could try deleting the Google Photos app and reinstalling, taking care to select the correct email address for the backup option. Camera roll photos will not be affected.

Hi, Thank you for your response! I did deinstall and reinstall and logged in again... but it doesn't solve it. The "Preparing backup" is still turning, and even though I have only used up a 1/3 of my space, it still hasn't uploaded any photos from my phone since end of October 2022...

1. delete the Google Photos app, photos in the camera roll will not be affected
2. power down/power up or restart the device
3. reinstall Google Photos checking the correct account is used and the backup size is correct
4. Google Photos should rescan the camera roll to backup all the photos which are not already online

If possible leave the app open and make sure that Background app refresh is enabled in the iOS settings; Google Photos

 

If that doesn't fix it, turn off Back up & sync. Pinch the screen to see the month view, select the whole month and use the option to Backup now. Photos already backed up will not be re uploaded. 

 

One thing to look out for: Large videos which might be causing a problem, if you have any of these it might be worth trying them individually.

 

Another possibility is 0 byte files which are occasionally seen with WhatsApp images.
