the Supreme Court ruling in favor of a man who refused to bake a custom wedding
cake for a same-sex couple due to a religious objection the court held that
the Colorado Civil Rights Commission showed hostility toward the Baker based
on his religious beliefs the couple at the center of the controversy reacted to
the verdict this way earlier today why I don't feel like our case is about a cake
it's about getting access to public accommodation freedom of religion is
essential in our country and that's why it's protected by the Constitution but
you cannot practice your faith in a way that harms others or excludes them from
public life Jack Phillips is the owner of masterpiece cake shop we've been
talking about it for months with this case in the news Kristen Wagner is
senior vice president with Alliance defending freedom who argued on mr.
Philips behalf in this case thank you both for joining me mr. Phillips when
you first heard this verdict come down or this decision come down what was your
first response I was thrilled with it this is a big win for us it now when you
say us who do you mean for all creative professionals especially my family and
myself but for all creative professionals it now gives us a ruling
that says that we can go about creating our works or art
without fear of punishment from the government and what is it exactly that
you wanted to see happen maybe on a wider scope because this is a very
narrow case with regard to this I think it's a complete win they they covered
everything that we asked the court to look at they didn't deny anything that
we asked for can I ask you a little bit about the hostility because that's why
the Supreme Court came down on this because you they didn't feel that you
were respected 7to is a big ruling because you scooped up liberal justices
in that to on that seven it speaks to the issue of how people who
are pushing for religious freedom and other items are being talked to to what
was it like now that you can repeat I know you can't repeat everything because
I'm the Commissioner of the Civil Rights Commission Chairman the Civil Rights
Commission called religious freedom despicable piece of rhetoric she
compared my not making a cake designing a cake for a custom cake for a same-sex
wedding she compared that with the Holocaust in with slave owners we endure
death threats then by all males phone calls threatening life threatening
things just recently had somebody trying to come and kill me with a machete
you're shaken by this I can see that you know I want to ask your attorney a
question miss Wagner when you look at this I I read on the air Lambda Legal
that represents the LBGT LGBTQ community and saying that this really is harmful
to the community what do you say to that I mean there are critics who are looking
out for the community and saying this hurts I say that Jack serves everyone
who walks in his store all walks of life he employs people from all walks of life
but he doesn't express all messages and no American should have to this ruling
protects those who are lesbian graphic designers who are Democratic speakers
because this the court said that the same rule has to apply to both sides and
it said particularly with regard to the issue of same-sex marriage that people
on both sides deserve tolerance and respect and that the Colorado government
hasn't given that to Jack what kind of relationship and I'm just curious to
know if there because you're a man who said you're strong in your faith you you
want to walk in love what type of relationship what did you say to that
couple that maybe gave them another place to go did you recommend another
Baker I mean what was your conversation like my conversation was very short they
we exchanged names and reductions one of them said we're here to look at wedding
cakes the other one said it's for our wedding at that point I knew
it was a wedding cake that I couldn't create in good conscience and so I tried
to apologize to the young man you know I'm sorry
I'll show you anything else in the shop cookies brownies birthday cakes
I'll make custom work for you this is just a cake that I can't create because
it creates a special message that goes against the core of my faith
you said you employ people from all walks of life was there somebody else on
your staff who could have made that wedding cake for the same-sex couple the
point is that the state is still targeting me in the United States
Supreme Court has now incinerated it and jack is the one who designs those cakes
and it's important how that conversation ended with them cussing him out with
them picketing his store giving him the finger and then suing him and then as he
said enduring death threats and all kinds of threats and hostility as a
result well and as a US Supreme Court ruled disrespect in the language of the
Commissioner or the Commission I should say I could read real quickly before I
let you go would you if there were a movement to put this beyond because this
really is only about this one case I mean I know you say it helps everybody
but it doesn't really right don't you have to take this movement further oh I
think it absolutely does because the court made another affirmative statement
as it did in the same-sex marriage decision that people on both sides of
the debate deserve respect and have protection it also said that this kind
of religious hostility has no place in a pluralistic society and it needs to stop
and we're seeing other other governments do this in other cases too other
creative professionals mr. Phillips miss Wagner thank you very much thank
you for coming in and being thank you for Eddie's appreciate it thank you
right now voters are headed to the polls for primaries in eight states it's
somewhat of a Super Tuesday short of a presidential election but most eyes will
be on California where a crowded field could risk shutting some Democrats out
of the general election you might even see two Republicans running against each
other they call it a wild or jungle election because anybody can vote for
anybody from any party for any party could the risk
a big setback happened in the party's push to win back control of Congress
that blue wave they've been talking about a lot of sport with reactions
dickless Fox News Alert now voters are headed to the polls today for primaries
in eight states and what some are calling a mini Super Tuesday but
California is taking much of that focus the state so-called jungle primary will
have the top two finishers in their contests advancing regardless of
political party raising particular concern among Democrats that their
candidates could be shut out of the general election Peter Doocy is live for
us in San Diego California with the story so how does it work Peter Paris
here in California the number of voters who say they don't identify with any
political party are ballooning look at these numbers over the last twenty years
you can see that this is the first ever primary where registered Republicans are
in third place behind people who are registered to have no preference but
Democrats aren't exactly beefing up their numbers either the Democrats have
to be cautious here too because their numbers haven't grown over that twenty
years
we also talked to a Republican strategist who helps the party raise
millions of dollars here and explained the part of the reason for the
stagnation and the Republican ranks is that the last big election didn't have
much of a California connection in that particular year there was no statewide
Republican candidate it was a contest between two strident progressive liberal
women and you know Hillary Clinton on a winner-take-all basis was clearly going
to get the electoral vote so unless you thought that your particular congressman
or state assemblyman or Assemblywoman state senator was in jeopardy and most
of these districts in California are safe there was a low incentive to
turnouts and just because registered Democrats are dominating doesn't mean
they don't have to work for votes the top Republican running right now John
Cox for governor has spent just over five million dollars on a very
high-profile campaign while a top Democrat lieutenant governor Gavin
Newsom has spent three times that much 15 million dollars I have seen this
movie before where frontrunners take things for
granted and they just read the polls and then folks that allegedly were
supportive don't turnout because they think oh that person's got it and those
folks are looking for work and Democratic groups from DC and elsewhere
are also pouring millions of dollars into House races in some districts where
they're just trying to get a Democrat to finish in the top two because if your
first or second you move on but that is not a guarantee in some districts where
the highest the Democrat may finish is third place and if that's the case
Harris that is going to be the last election today is going to be the last
election for that candidate this year Peter thank you very much bringing in
now my next guest California congresswoman Mimi Walters Deputy Chair
of the National Republican Congressional Committee good to see you today I want
to start with where you are in California and whether Democrats have a
right to be worried
Democrats do have a right to be worried our tax cuts and our conservative
economic policy are playing very well even in this deep blue state and if I
was a Democrat I would be worried I'm in Orange County right now our returns in
my race almost 50 percent of the absent teas that are being returned our
Republican we're feeling very good about the race now Orange County is typically
a little bit more conservative so I would imagine that you would expect to
do somewhat better there than you would do in more liberal areas but are there
areas where Democrats might be surprised well I think they will be surprised
they're going after seven of us in California where Hillary won our
districts and I think they think that they have a chance to win these races
and they are going to be mistaken because we are seeing the Republicans
turning out so far on the early voting and there's a lot of enthusiasm on the
Republican side what do you think this tells us about November we you know have
been having this conversation about a jungle primary and how people can come
out from any party and vote for somebody else of any other party it's kind of
unique what does that tell us about what could happen in November well I believe
that Nancy Pelosi has overplayed her hand because she has said that in order
to flip the house they must do it through California and I think she's
going to find out that that's not going to happen the Democrats have a very big
problem of possibly not getting in the top two in a couple of our open seats
here in Orange County and if they get shut out of the general election there's
no way they're going to be able to take the house and what do you do I mean do
you have the same problem for Republicans that you do for Democrats
you know they're bifurcated you get two Democrats on a ticket and look at what
happened in patan Pennsylvania I mean Connor lamb went slightly to the to the
right and it got complicated do you have that same problem if there are two
Republicans on the ticket in November well we do have two Republicans on a
ticket in California's 48 which is in Orange County but we also have a lot of
Democrats what we're seeing right now is we have in some of these races the
Republicans will come out first and then it's a it's a race for second place so
if we have two Republicans come out on top we will be happy because then we
know that the Democrats will be a stout all right I want to get to some breaking
news now Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has just said due to the
historic obstruction by Senate Democrats of the president's nominees I'm quoting
him from a statement and the goal of passing appropriations bills prior to
the end of the fiscal year the August recess has been cancelled your reaction
well first of all the taxpayers of this country send all of us to Washington DC
to do the people's work and in the house we've passed almost 700 pieces of
legislation and the Senate has only passed out close to 200 the Senate is
sitting on 500 bills right now that need to be taken up in the Senate and if and
if Mitch McConnell the leader believes that they need to cancel August recess
then I am in full support of it because we need to get the people's work done
you know this is also some strategy if you will because this is calling
Democrats out and saying you know you have obstructed this way forward and
we've heard the president say this as well how is this in terms of strategy do
you think well we've had a difficult time having the Democrats come to the
table and move legislation forward and you can see that that's happened in the
Senate I mean again they're only they're sitting on 500 pieces of legislation
they've been obstructing the nomination process for this president and the
leader has said enough is enough yeah those nominations that's part of it
there are some north of a hundred positions that they need Congress to
move on congresswoman Mimi Walters first time on the program we're so happy to
have you thank you very much thanks for having me breaking
developments on the President Trump and dictator Kim Jong Un's summit the White
House announcing the venue of next week's plan sit-down with North Korea's
dictator the latest as more pieces of the summit are falling into place
you
